The F-15EX's radar with (four? six?!?!!) of these strapped to its wings sounds unfair. And I'm here for it. Imagine that plus F-22s and F-35s with AIM-260s (comparable performance to Russian and Chinese hypersonics but with much better seeker heads) fitting in the same space as an AMRAAM and then complemented by the Peregrine (similar performance as the AMRAAM but half the size/twice the carry).

One thing I find interesting g is the interservice rivalry effecting the use and deployment of both the AIM-174B and AIM-260. From what I know, there is concern in the Navy that for the first 2-3 years of it production run, the Airforce is going to hog all the AIM-260's for itself and the Navy will receive small, infrequent delivery's of the missile. That is one of the main reasons it developed the AIM-174B, not only does it have a massive range exceeding that of the AIM-260 (albeit it is very large and cumbersome), but it is a Navy missile and the Navy controls who gets it. What we are likely to see is the Navy will have a near monopoly on the AIM-174B and it's future developments while the Airforce will have a near monopoly on the AIM-260 and it's developments, trading with each other for the others missile to get a balanced loadout.

@charlesrichardson86353 ай бұрын
Remember the SM-6 and AIM-174B are multirole missiles. That means they have more SM-6 type missiles not having to be in Vertical Launch Containers but still usable by the fleet AEGIS systems! The VLC's can run out and then you go home, but if you use a pile of AIM-174's on F18 SH you have a much longer time in theater before leaving. It will be interesting to see the exact tactics the Navy comes up with. The 174B has a 148 lbs warhead that can strike a specific area in a target ship or jet or ballistic missile. So not so much a rival idea to the AIM 260 which has to fit in stealth bays for the USAF.

So what makes the -174 special is that it can be directed by multiple data link sources. The range is absolutely 200 miles, and that's achievable because the plane can launch it with no radar contact, but a more forward radar location can pick up the missiles data link and guide it in before it goes Pitbull. If command and control has to be passed along more than once that is also an option. Making long range missiles is easy, communicating with one accurately beyond line of sight is much harder.

mass-wise, i think strapping two AIM-174Bs onto an F-16 is perfectly doable. if you consider that an f-16 can drag two 2,000lb bombs around, and that the SM-6 weighs about 1,500lbs after the Mk 72 booster is removed (as we see here in the AIM-174B), there shouldn't really be anything physically stopping the air force from hitting up the navy and being like "hey AIM-260 is taking too damn long hook us up with some SM-6"

Another point you might have made about “maximum range” is that the maximum “burn time” of the motor is only a fraction of the max range, so after that it’s only “coasting”, and having to maneuver eats away at its range. Perhaps that’s a reason that they usually “loft” early in flight: if it had to climb during the “coasting” phase, it would quickly bleed off ALL its energy.
