Mbulazi, ngenkulu inhlonipho bhuti I am really not comfortable being ruled by a king. The world has changed so drastically since the ancient rule of kings which essentially put themselves in power based on physical strength and how big their families are. It had nothing to do with meritocracy of knowing how to rule. Kings do not have a devine right to rule unchallenged as they would have you believe. I am really uneasy with that. From the formation of the ANC, some kings were involved and of course some of them didn’t see the value.. but in answering your question, the ANC formation has the kings in a picture. Consultation with the kings were done… how many apartheid battles were fought by rural and township people with under the leadership of kings? Was that the involve of Kings, and Chiefs? The role might not have been huge because the political battle was to find a foreign law which could be easily interpreted outside the customary/natural law. This is why the involvement of the kings and chiefs seem minimal. The Roman/ /Dutch and British law was to be understood as contemporary ruling of the then, therefore, the conventional political formations were to be seen more visible… those political formation required the people from those Kingdoms to join the battles. Kingdom is the kingdom because of the people. If the kings and chiefs did not endorse those involvement, the then political formations would have no people to grow the membership. To access the people, kings and chiefs are gatekeepers.
