I have owned a Canon R5 C for 2 years, paring it with my RED EPIC on many Productions. This is a deep dive pragmatic discussion about the reasoning I had to go with a second R5 C purchase instead of the new Canon R5 Mark II, Canon C80, Canon C400, or the RED Komodo X.

One correction that has been drawn to my attention... In the Canon R5 C, when filming in 120p 4K XF-AVC, it does seem to use line skipping. This is the only mode I know of that does this. BUT, you do have the option to film 120p in 3K RAW which I never see discussed! This has no line skipping. Below are links to my videos comparing the slo-mo modes of the Canon R5 C if interested. Love you made this video! I'm not a "try all the cameras you can" guy, back in the days I used my Canon 5Dmk3 for 11 years, now it's the third year I'm happy with my R5c. I just came home from a mini docu in Kenya, lots of smaller corporate jobs here at home, theaters, photos and prints too.. and for all that, just a compact rig with v99 battery, I look cool (as you mentioned, not my goal but clients are pleased), 512 GB CF card and I don't have to worry about shooting time. Won't leave this camera for a long time!

I was torn between getting the C80 and the R5c but your videos convinced me to pick up two R5cs instead of two C80s even in 2025. R5c has photo and video, 8k and CF Express type B. The only thing it lacks is a build in ND filter. Rather spend the balance on glass and accessories.

Great information. Thank you. I currently have a Red Komodo OG as camera A and the Canon EOS R as a B cam. I may shift to two R5C. Red Raw is phenomenal. But the magic of Canon is their color science. Skin tones on Canon just look right.

I also have the original Canon R and man... the R5 C really just blows it out of the water. So if you are happy with color off of the R, the R5 C is definitely another level. Funny, I was running the R as my B-Cam alongside my RED EPIC. Did a shoot side by side with a guy I hired who had the Komodo. The Komodo and R5 C were neck and neck for the footage when I had them in the editing room. The R5 C, was just quicker to use, had auto features, and better low light, plus... 2K more resolution. All those things really came in handy for the shoot. But.. I love the look of the Komodo so in no way knocking it. Fantastic camera. If I were in your boat, I might just replace the R5 C and keep the Komodo for a while. RED really is so good.

Fantastic honest overview of a decision many of us are debating. Even with the new offerings from Canon the R5c holds so much promise in a small form factor. I love how you put the camera purchase in context with all other things you have to buy to create high level productions. Lights, sound, lenses, computer... all important to consider.

Thanks for the kind words. Yep, the R5 C is most definitely still a camera to consider moving into 2025. I still use my RED as well that shoots in 6K that was from 2017 because the specs and end result are simply just as good, and in many cases better than, newer cameras coming out today (outside of auto-assist features). Age doesn't matter if the specs and end result are right there with the newest cams. 8K RAW still be considered overkill for the next few years so feel confident enough it is future proofed to have made the second purchase.

Just wanted to confirm the new lpe6p battery does greatly increase the runtimes by 50% It now makes the talk of battery life a non issue as the R5C now actually has longer runtime than the r5mkii . The lpe6p is honestly a game changer for the R5C.

Great to see this video! And, yep, I watched to the end. (Thanks Ash.) I'm thinking about a second r5c for three main reasons: -- 1. Like Ash says, the fan. I've shot in conditions where the guys around me had their cameras shutting down from overheating. But that fan saved my butt. -- 2. Air travel. Not that I fly often at all, but still... I got hassled by airport staff two days ago because my carry-on bag was a few kg over. And there wasn't that much in it -- two C70 bodies, some batteries, just one lens. -- 3. The weight. I don't like using the C70 handheld. It's too heavy for me. I don't feel nimble, my wrist gets twisted at weird angles, and the footage comes out shakier than I like. But the weight of an r5c is a whole other story. So, yeah. Just thought I'd mention that, because they're *slightly* different reasons from Ash. I never shoot 8K raw, and I'm never trying to do guerilla shooting without a permit, and to be honest I'm not in love with the image out of the r5c. But there are reasons it's a practical choice for what I do. Edit.... Thought of another related application.... So, a year or two ago, I was doing a nightclub shoot. Run around the crowd, create a highlights video to promote the club. So, it's a crowded space, things happen fast, I didn't want to mess around with less changes. My solution was to hang one C70 from my neck with a neck strap and a 24mm, and have another C70 with a 50mm attached to my belt. So, I could drop the wide angle and grab the tighter shot pretty fast if I had to. Anyway.... it worked fine. But if I had two r5c bodies hanging from photographer chest straps, I think it would have been easier and faster...

All interesting stuff! I appreciate you sharing on here your reasons for digging the R5 C and experiences with the C70. Only thing I wonder is, when you mention your not sold fully on the image out of the R5 C, you also mention that you don't film in 8K RAW... that 8K RAW really does make it a different camera for me. It is when I am filming in RAW that I feel it rivals my RED. But I wouldn't say that is the case when filming in XF-AVC. The XF-AVC is great, but the RAW is where the cinema mojo kicks in full swing. Have you tinkered with the RAW in post? The color and DR is enhanced and the image has more depth. It also opens the ability to color with CLOG2 which I find I prefer for bright scenes. For Dark scenes, I gravitate more to CLOG3.

​@@AshvonChamier Yep, your images speak for themselves, Ash! Ain't no way XF-AVC comes close to that. And cheers for the tip re dark scenes vs bright scenes. Maybe that's ultimately what I'd want in a future camera -- great image *in a compressed format*! Something that's got your back for covering conference presentations for 8 hours or a wedding for 16 hours without handing you a bill with terabytes of data written on it. One thing I should add to the discussion: reasons *not* to get a second r5c. And I guess there's two main ways the camera has let me down. First is battery. But your tip re using the newer batteries sounds awesome. That was my biggest complaint with the camera. I want to keep it lean and minimal; I don't want to have to attach USB-C powerbanks or V-mounts or whatever. Second... This has happened to me a few times after using 4K continuously for an extended recording, like maybe an hour -- the image on the LCD screen freezes, and you lose control over the camera. I'm guessing it's an overheating issue that the fan can't deal with. No button you press has any effect. Bizarrely, even the off switch doesn't work -- the image stays frozen on the screen. But what does work is physically removing the battery. Now, it's a testament to the camera's reliability that the first thing that happens when you turn it on again is you get a message about a problem file that needs repairing, and you click "hell yeah", and the camera does its thing and actually recovers all the data. But, yeah, that stuff is scary. Another random thought about the camera... For outside daylight, I love the EF-RF adapter with ND filter built in. (I mostly use EF lenses.) I think you lose a stop or two of light, but you gain a lot of convenience. I switch out to the basic EF-RF adapter for darker conditions.

You’re correct. C70mis too soft. It’s nice to have a solid full frame sensor that you can choose whatever lens you want for a modern look or a softer look.

Not that I need one but I just want more. 😂 Sold my Komodo and while the image quality was insane, still couldn’t match R5c overall, it was actually not even close. Yeah, I didn't really expect to land on the buying decision being to just get another R5 C, but it really just made the most sense for me. I am excited about Caleb's Cineback being sold through Camera Foundry. I will definitely make a video on it after I have used it on a few more shoots and dialed in how I like it set up. Great overview and I agree the R5C is still fantastic. Perhaps Canon will release an R5C mk2 in the future which makes it an easy decision to keep the original R5C’s as B/C cams. As a RED owner, I can share that Canon RF glass autofocus works OK on Komodo, but much snappier on KX and V-Raptor. I tend to use my Sigma ART EF lenses more than Canon RF. I can use speed boosters with Komodo and KX and a “behind the lens” EF/RF VND on V-Raptor. For Cine lenses I went with DZO Pictor for Super 35, and Vespid for full frame, which I got during B&H sales. Of course Arles look amazing. It’s hard to stomach how expensive the Canon RF hybrid lenses cost 😅

All very interesting to hear about. That is awesome that the Komodo X does better with the RF glass. The majority of my lenses are EF so I also use both the RF to EF Vari-ND adapter you mentioned, and when I need a stop more light, throw on the RF to EF 0.71 Focal Reducer and set the R5 C to 6K RAW/Super 35mm to still maintain that Full Frame look. My future lens purchases are a bit up in the air. I don't know if I want to go with more RF glass... which I lean toward... or invest in some legit cinema glasses. Because I am primarily a one man band, the auto-focus needed when I am running multiple cameras or doing gimbal work.. Also, the Image stabilization really makes a difference. Wish I could just buy it all. LOL

@@AshvonChamier I'm in the same boat! I'd love to own several of the new RF Hybrid lenses, plus there's the Canon RF 85mm DS (DS version has a coating with a softer look that's beautiful). At the same time I fully expect any future RED/Nikon camera to be Z Mount. I always felt RED having RF was great because it makes it easy to own RF and EF glass and pick up a Canon camera for the jobs that need autofocus or light gimbal work. For Cine glass I like the image of the Arles and would consider them. I'd take Arles over the Tokina and save the extra money. Otherwise I still really like the Canon CN-E glass and as an added bonus the Canon CN-E Sumire lenses are just fantastic!

Hey Ash, thats a great video indeed. And your capability to create pictures is outstanding. My big point about Canon R5C or R5ii is the viewfinder. As a TV-reporter I could not manage to work fluently in run-and-gun-situations with my C70 including the heavy rigged-up Zacuto viewfinder. This would not change if I got the C80 or even the C400. But you are right: the lack of oversampled 4k50 in the R5ii is a disappointment even it has image stabilization...

Interesting and thanks for adding to the conversation! Just to point out, the R5 II offers IBIS, but the R5 C does have a pretty solid Image Stabilization when paired with an RF lens that has Image Stabilization. Somethin else I just started using that I will be doing a video on is THE SAAK. There are many brands of the concept, but it is just a padded bag that you hang around you that you place the camera on top of. It is so simple, so comfortable for long shoots, and has me going to by gimbal WAY less because of how good it works.

Since this december 23 (2024), LPE6P now alows RAW LT 8K@60 FPS on the R5 C without external power supplies .. And that's awesome with the dual fisheye Lens and for gimbal use.. Firmware 1.0.9.1 ^^ Happy new year ! :)

Sure thing. The specs from the last generation of cameras was so good, it is hard to improve leaps and bounds again like we have been experiences over the last 10 years of camera offerings. From here out for some time, I think we are only going to see marginal improvement options in the new stuff. Most of it focused on Auto-Features, ergonomics, or compatibility options within brand specific ecosystems. Increased Dynamic Range is always welcome though!

Yeah, the R5 C for the time being really still has it's own place in the canon lineup and for video shooters, I think is the better move between the two. Of course, an R5 II is extremely capable of doing fantastic video projects on, but the R5 C really is meant for video first. Agreed on R5 C II. Part of me thinks it might still be another year to year and half. Could be wrong, but I think they won't want to cannibalize their C80 sales in particular. The R5 C did come out at stand alone time period last time, not really with a cluster of new Canon Cameras. It still wonder if it was just designed as a solution to the original R5's overheating issues and wasn't on the road map originally? I don't know.

Thank you for the video :-) I am mainly a landscape (and wildlife) photographer and have been shooting with Nikon since the film era. I'm considering switching to the Canon R5C because I'm increasingly doing videos for clients (using my Blackmagic 4K). The R5C interests me because, for my needs when I'm in the mountains, it would combine both a camera and a photo tool in one (and it's weather-sealed, unlike my Blackmagic). Initially, I was thinking about getting the Nikon Z8, an absolute beast for photography, but after watching some online videos of its video output, it felt too digital for my taste. I love sharpness in photography, but I want the complete opposite in video, haha - the impossible choice! But this R5C seems to strike a good balance... Perhaps the ideal for me would be an R5C Mark II (or a future Nikon with RED collaboration), but that's just speculation at this point ^^ And everyone has recommended the FX3 to me, but I’m a photographer first… so I prefer the R5C for that reason as well. I haven’t ordered it yet; I’m waiting until 2025 just in case Canon releases an R5C Mark II, haha. I’ll need it to shoot an adventure/expedition film in Greenland, fully self-supported (yes, I’ve planned for plenty of CFexpress B cards and V-mount batteries ^^).

Love the conversation. I can't offer much opinion about Nikon becuase I have never owned a Nikon camera. They really have caught up a lot with video but because that has only been the case for the past couple of years, it has just not been on my radar with how good the options have been to for Canon, RED, and Sony. My Sony cams are pretty old at this point but way more valuble for the picture I could still get out of them then what I could sell them for. So I have kept them and know I have a back up plan if any camera goes down. A Nikon with RED sensor could change the game and I would have to watch that for a bit for sure. It is very interesting. The SONY FX3 is great but in my opinion the R5 C legitimately has better highlight rolloff, offers RAW internally with 8K and 6K, and is a beast of a photo camera... all for nearly the same price. I remember back when I was using exclusively Sony, being very interested in Canon but their price point for the specs they offered couldn't compete with Sony. Now, the roles have reversed, other than Auto-Focus because Sony still wins there. When you look at a camera like the Canon C400 at $8K that rivals the Sony Burano at $20K+, you can see Canon is consistently offering better specs than Sony for each price point. A lot of Sony shooters wanted Canon but went with Sony because they were giving away the farm. I think the difference now is the amount of influencers that use Sony make it seem like the way to go. Then on the FILM end, Sony used to make FILM CAMERAS so DP's were more open to using them for Digital whereas Canon never had a footprint there to begin with as far as I know... so it has been less adopted. All that being said, Canon R5 C continues to amaze me with the picture quality... in particular when filming RAW. That is where it Rivals my RED. At the end of the day though, most every camera made that crosses the $3K threshold made in the last 3 years is pretty amazingly good. Best of luck in your decision. R5 C Mark II is trick because I don't know what they will make that is better than the current one, that doesn't cannibalize C/80 and C400 sales? But I am rooting for a version that has built in-ND and XLR.

Thanks! I'll do my best to keep the episodes coming. You are right I like going for a "lush" image. I have trouble taming it down once I see it pushed in the color grade and then A B test it to my eye over a few days, I more often than not just always gravitate to a juicy image. However, the film I am working on now with Trans Am Worldwide, due out next month, will have a lot of 70's film stock looks through it. Have to go less punchy for that. Great video! I am still in love with my R5C going into the second year. Amazing camera and was actually thinking of upgrading next year into a new A Cam but yeah I wasn't impressed with the R5 II, and your video opened my eyes into the limitations of SD slots on the C80! I think I will keep using my R7 as a B cam until the R5C II comes along in 2026 maybe.

Hey, glad you came across the video and to hear that it helped you explore your current options a little more. Yeah, if I had to guess.. and I could be wrong... I think you are right that 2026 or late 2025 is when we might see the R5 C II emerge. I just don't see how they could put out a R5 C II that was better than the R5 C is currently, without cannibalizing their C/80 sales. Keeping mind the R5 C still provides 8K and no way they can go back down now on that model. I would still expect them to hold back on internal ND's in the r5 C II. But, I hope somehow competition is stiff enough from other manufactures that they just give it to to us with an increase in Dynamic Range, and a more compressed RAW codec option, triple base ISO would be pretty sweet. But if they did... it would be hard to justify buying a more expensive other camera model so I doubt we will get all that. Hence, I felt even more secure just picking up the 2nd R5 C because the R5 C II may still have to be too crippled to convince me to upgrade even still. But I hope they just give us the farm on the R5 C II.

As a recent R5ii buyer, I'd agree with your points regarding the internal fan, 8k raw converting to clog 2, and the line skipped modes and frame rates. These are definitely drawbacks that are not present in the R5C. That being said, I am a photo-first hybrid shooter, so many of the drawbacks mentioned are not actually deal breakers. The 4k fine modes in 24 and 30fps are enough for my needs, however, I would love an R5C as a second, more video-focused camera for more intense video shoots. Hi, pretty interesting video. The main issue with the R5C (and I personally own one) is the lack of built-in ND filters… If you do not need 8k, I would suggest the C80 from the same brand instead.

C/80 is great. On the R5 C when I am using my EF lenses, I have the RF to EF adapter with with the vari-ND wheel. It is pretty fantastic and works very much like having a built in, ND. When using my RF glass, I invested in a B+W Vari-ND. I wish it was built in. For me the trade off for 8K and my particular projects makes the most sense but completely understand how the C/80 will be the right choice for many. Thanks for sharing!

Got one, did a shoot. Found it a bit noisy in medium low light and they DR was a let down after comparing to the C70. Very sharp and good AF though.

It took me a little time to figure out what setting the camera liked to avoid noise in my RAW filming. The camera likes light and switching to 3200 ISO enables you to almost always be able to feed it enough light. In general, I don't have noise issues anymore now that I use 3200 so often. As far as DR, it can be a bit shy in some scenarios but in general, what I can get back from those harsh shooting situations in post with CLOG2 gets me happy 90% of the time. Took me a couple of weeks of filming with it and testing footage to start understanding what it liked. That was actually the case with my RED as well.

I totally felt the same with my RED at 6K for the last 5 years. I didn't really think I would use the 8K as much as I do. But once I started toying with it, now I feel like I am missing it when I don't use it. But for longer running live action stuff where I am not doing controlled TAKES with people, I use the 4K XF-AVC. I can film so long with that and it still looks fantastic. Hey, thanks! As far as the line skipping on 120p footage with the R5 C, are you sure about that. I have read and watched information from several sources online and KZbin that it does not use line skipping when filming in 120p. It does use an advanced form of Pixel Binning to assist in data rates, but that is different than line skipping. Griffin Conway is an accomplished filmmaker on KZbin who has been using the C70 for years. He got the C80 and compared them and the dynamic range is basically identical in the real world This is why to me people like Gerald Undone don't mean much because he doesn't actually shoot anything in real life and charts are misleading. And the C80 beats the C70 in virtually every other area with much sharper video across the board, lower ISO noise, and all the full frame goodness.

I wanted to get a r5 m2, I'm not even in the business. I'd be using it solely for creating family memories and documenting the life of our next dog. The 240fps slow motion is really appealing to me. Can the look of 240fps be achieved with the r5 in post? My goal was to acquire the m2 used at some point during 2025.

I am not sure but if so, it will still require additional software and possibly a strong computer, long wait times per clip you do it too, and results will never be as pristine as the real deal. BUT, 120p at 4K is pretty dang nice if willing to make the compromise and choose a less expensive camera. I don't know if the software is still going but there was something called "Twixtor" back in the day that made fake slo-motion out of your footage.

I have the C400. So much about it I love. Until this camera dropped, and damn we all waited, I was a huge fan of the C70 minus the shape. I had a couple. I also was a fan of the R5c but no Clog2 unless you go 8k was a bit rough. But if I shot all of a video on the R5c with Clog3 and some work... it rocked. I couldn't get it to look right in 4k to match the C70. Anyway. The C400 is pretty badass. I use the 24-105 RF 2.8 on it. ZERO focus issues in all circumstances. It's gone. Point and aim... tight. I missed one shot on an event on a pan shot that a pole was in the middle and the focus jumped, only because the initial shot happened real fast and I wasn't locked on yet. I don't have an "Ash" crystal ball but I see a C400 or C80 in your future. Clearly you get the Canon color, function and ease of the product. BTW. Your images are awesome. Best forward.

Since last year, I had been budgeting for 2 R5Cs for my in-house production job. So many things have come out since then, and I applaud Canon for upgrading their systems. BUT, the lenses are too dang expensive for me to justify continuing with Canon. They're fantastic lenses, and I would love to own them. But when it comes to budget, and Sony, with it's amazing autofocus and 3rd party lens support... the numbers don't lie. I've been using Sigma art lenses since 2015. And the new Sigma 24-70's and 70-200 get the job done for all of my work. I really wish Canon would allow Sigma to get on board, but it's not happening. I'll be getting an FX3, and 2 A7RV's to round out photo/video needs. All CF Express A and small form factor, with the ability to expand to a cineback or rigidpro. I'm actually going to get a RigidPro for the FX3, considering the price difference of the handle extension. The Cineback handle extension alone for the FX3 is $300... sheesh! Also going to get a Smallrig V-mount battery plate for the A7RV to power the camera when needed. FYI, I see a green streak a little more than halfway past the middle of the frame. That tended to appear for me when my old C200 was in RAW. Great video!

Totally valid points. I actually only have TWO RF lens! All my other lenses are older EF mount lenses I use with adapters. A lot of the shots in the video were done with a used, cheap Japanese 16-35mm F/2.8 EF I bought for $600 of ebay years ago! Paired with Canon's RF to EF adapters w and w/o Vari ND wheel. Lots of cheap used options on EF glass. But my RF 24-70 f/2.8 has become the king lens I keep on the R5 C 80% of the time. But none the less, your SONY path is 100% solid and of course, will make for fantastic images too. With you already having SIGMA ART lenses, it makes a lot of sense to keep going in that direction. I think people buying their first cameras don't realize how much once they start the path of building lenses of certain mount type, it will continue to steer their camera body choices into the future too. I have so much EF glass and now started RF, it makes it hard for me to go back to Sony if I wanted to. I still have 2 Sony Cams that I can't bring myself to sell because I built my business with them and I could still make work today both that that would be competitive with my current cams. A little more cumbersome to use... but great images still.

@@AshvonChamier I've actually been adapting EF glass on both an R6 and 2 GH5s' for almost 5 years. I held on to my EF glass to adapt and make the setup work. I've had no video autofocus this entire time though. So I'm selling off the cameras, 2 24-70's and 70-200, and switching over to E-mount. I tested out the S5II and loved it, but Panasonic still has a ways to go before they reach autofocus capabilities of the big boys. Still a fantastic deal, and I'm sure Panasonic will come out swinging with this next iteration. But I can't look away from investing in Sony and Sigma E-mount. I also want lighter lenses than the EF glass. Loved them for many years, but it's time to move on! Some day when I'm super rich, I'll get all the new RF stuff lol

And we just got a firmware update a few days ago, that gives us a ton of AF updates ..... aaaaand .... 8k60 RAW LT with AF .. without external power ... if you use the new LP-E6P packs. Even 45 minutes recording time opposed 30 minutes before.

@@pepsiq210200 The R5 C will never get CLOG 2. It doesn't have the dynamic range for CLOG 2. If you force it, by grading your RAW footage with CLOG 2 in post, you're loosing even more dynamic range. The C400, C80, R1 and R5 Mk II did get CLOG2, because they have 16+ stops of dynamic range. The R5 C has 14 stops of dynamic range at most and using CLOG 2 would cripple your footage. You can not beat physical limits, when nothing changes in hardware.

R5ii not that far from r5c and even c80 have just 1 stop better in the shadows. they just forcing people to shoot 8k raw for no reason. every other camera manufacturers put their best logs in every camera and there never was a problem( if its not 8bit only camera) i also have a bmpcc 4k and it s utilize the same log profile as a Ursa 12 k LF, yes it is not using it at full range but that's never hurt image from bmpcc 4k. all that sensor BS i just excuse from Canon. there was no reason to do that, it s just stupid. But they are too proud to admit that stupidity

​@@pepsiq210200 Blackmagic handles their colorspace differently, so you can't compare this. Also CLOG2 is not a "better" color profile. The best color profile is the correct color profile. A few facts: - the Canon R5 C has 14 stops of dynamic range at best. - The Canon R5 Mk II has 16+ stops of dynamic range - CLOG 2 is designed for footage with 16 stops of dynamic range or more. - Canon is forcing nobody to shoot RAW. - Canon willl under no circumstances include a LOG profile in the camera, that is not suited to the sensor, that is in said camera. You are simply not understanding, why it's possible to select CLOG2 for RAW footage. Or maybe RAW in general. RAW footage does not have the color space baked in. That applies to nearly all RAW footage (also BRAW, even though it's a hybrid). You select the correct color space yourself in your NLE in post. That your NLE gives you the option of CLOG2, is because it's a default (of your NLE) for Canon RAW footage. That does not mean, that it's the correct color profile for your footage. You have to know, what you're doing. You could in theory apply ANY color space you wanted to RAW footage. But if you choose the wrong color space for your footage, you add noise or even skew the colors. That's on you !

I was about to buy the R5c and then the r5ii was announced. I have been shooting with the r5 II since launch and where I thought clog2 would be my go to I find I’m shooting raw and 4k sRAW. I sold my r6 II and trying to decide if I get another r5 II or get a r5c. The rolling shutter is so controlled on the r5ii. Does the R5c offer 4k sRAW and/or standard picture profile in 10bit? These are features that make the r5ii special especially shooting in xf-hevc in longop. Excellent vid!

The R5 C does not offer 4K sRAW. It offers 4K-XFAVC Intra and 6K RAW at a Super35 Crop. You can use a focal reducer on the 6K RAW Super 35mm to still achieve 6K Full Frame with the bonus having an additional stop of light... if you are using EF glass. You can film in LOG or BAKE in a LUT to your XF-AVC footage. Regrading the IBIS found in the R5 II vs the Digital IS found in the R5 C, the IBIS when using on a car mount system like I need to do, can cause a double stabilization wobble effect as the gimbal and the IBIS try to correct each other. For general handheld, the IBIS would most likely be favored. I have good results handheld with the R5C using Digital IS as long as the camera is rigged up with external battery so it is a bit heavier.

For the high resolution photos, couldn't you just use an AI software like Topaz to upscale the images? It's an extra step, but might be worth it. I'm trying to decide which camera to get, and i hate that they didn't add the cfast cards. If they had, I'd be a no-brainer, I'd get the C80.

While an interesting idea, in my case, I extract so many photos it would be a large additional step and at the end of the day, the true quality of an actual 8K frame is the best. This camera just give you that at such an incredible price now, it allows me to just to do it for my client and not even think about it. Thanks for uploading. Funny that you have gone with an R5C more, and have exactly the same considerations, so I don't have to go out and rent another camera. Also, disappointed with Canon's choice of card - SD? Their realization is "Oh we can't cannibalize our own lineup" instead of recognizing that Sony is running with the customers. I also shoot on the Sony FX6 (not my own), but that's when I'm hired for a documentary. It's a nice camera, but I like the colors from Canon better.

Thanks for sharing the feedback. I agree, a little too much of an attempt no to cannabilze their C400 sales by going with SD's on the C80. That being said, cameras are just so good now, the margin of potential improvements they can offer when it comes to image quality is getting razor thin. I've never used an FX6. I do still own a couple of Sony's and still like them. But... I have moved to RED and CANON because I do just like the colors, and the internal RAW from the R5 C is just magical with how it makes the end image just pop. I am definitely only interested in cameras that offer internal RAW at this point. I still film in XF-AVC for longer live running takes. But if we are going to do anything staged and lit, I am shooting in RAW. And all the car to car driving, 8K RAW has been absolutely fantastic.

@@AshvonChamier Yes, I am super happy with my R5C and, like you, I was a bit surprised by the initial comments. I previously shot on Blackmagic and here the problem was also the battery. But my thought here was "Hey we're talking about film" not photos but film told me that I needed an extended version of the camera, so I didn't see a V-mount solution as a problem. Whatever you choose to shoot, get good at your camera instead. Focus on what your story is and how you want to convey it. Growing up here in Denmark and seeing what they got out of the Dogme concept tells me a lot about how far you can go before equipment. Today we are just spoiled and lucky, as you rightly say, there are basically only good cameras. I was inspired to shoot more in 8K after your YT here. But I also think it's great that I can shoot super35 on my CR5 in 6K - what a camera.

No doubt the BM 6K FF can produce fantastic images. I am not as familiar with the specs but I believe that is a much more MANUAL USE type of camera. So not many auto features. The Auto Focus is pretty limited and I don't know that it supports Image Stabilization from the lenses. Furthermore, it does not offer any form of IBIS or Digital IS for internal stabilization. I could be wrong on some of that but I think that is the case. I think I have also heard others talk about it being a bit tricky to get balanced on Gimbals. None of that may be a deal breaker for you, but just something to point out as one set of differences between the options. The Dual Native ISO on the R5 C is something I use ALL THE TIME at every single shoot as well. Even in Bright Environments, I use 3200 ISO often. This video explains why if you are interested... The most frequently used lens on my R5 C's at this point is the RF 24-70mm f/2.8. It's a zoom but damn does it just look so good and gives me the luxury of a zoom range, it's hard to throw the prime back on sometimes, lol. That being said, I have a lot of the original Rokinon Cine Primes... the cheaper ones that range from $300 to $800. It is amazing how far you can go with those. The 24mm and the 135mm are pretty magical in particular. I do also like the 85mm. There are a million nuanced things that go into each production that it would be quite the conversation to explore tips for each thing. BUT, as a whole, the NUMBER 1 thing I would recommend you really put more effort than most first timers think to do is, get the best audio recoding's you can. Body mic the talent, overhead boom the talent, use multiple mics. Really take your sound recording of their dialogue as seriously as you images. High quality audio with even dull images can feel VERY professional. But even if you have phenomenal images, if your dialogue recording sounds thin, distant, echoey, scratchy, rumbly, etc... it will make your film amateur. As mostly solo shooter, I only buy sound recording devices that record in 32bit float. If you don't know what that is, I have a video on it I can share so just let me know. Good luck buddy!

I think we it is a bit of mixed bag. Often times it seems there can be a trade off in Dynamic Range and Low light ability in exchange for the Global Shutter. Rolling shutter has gotten pretty minimal on a lot of the latest cameras so I am not sure there will be a full switch by camera makers. I could see all the brands at least offering a model each that does have Global though but I don't think it will dominate the industry. Just my opinion, could be wrong. If they overcome that trade off with new affordable technology, than certainly, I would think it will replace.

I think you will find it super helpful! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmrQlmV5nNFjbdk As far as CODEC, you can film in COMPRESSED or RAW codecs based on what the cameras offer. In general, higher end cameras offer a RAW options. It is pure data right off the sensor. It provides the maxium dynamic range the camera sensor is capable of (Dynamic Range explained in the video I just shared with ya), and the most color information the sensor can provide. It is really more for professional work on powerful computers. Most theatrical release films and high end commercials film in RAW. Compressed codecs can still produce fantastic images as well, just a bit less flexible in Post Production when doing color grading. The Canon R5 C offers both a compressed codec called XF-AVC and RAW internal to the camera.

You are absolutely right. I have a lot of feedback across the channel that people are surprised with some of the results I am getting with this camera in my professional work. But it is really just that the camera is capable of helping the right composition and lighting choices shine. That.... AND.... I put a significant amount of editing time for a project into my color grading and really working the image.... of which the R5 C RAW has so much flexibility to toy with and come up with fun grades.

Shutter angle or no. Every time I keep my RED Gemini at home and use my R5 to my v+ or just by itself not having shutter ange IS A FRUSTRATING thing for me. I change frame rates, and forget to change the Shutter so if I do 120p for a quick grab I have to REMEMEBER to change the shutter back from 1/250 etc... Shutter angle is critical for me- AS FAR AS C80 I agree that was my gripe I am trying to convince myself its not a problem.

I love having shutter angle mode on the R5 C. You can set the R5 C in its CINEMA MENU to "Shutter Angle" mode at 180 degrees. That's what I do so the shutter automatically doubles whatever frame rate I put it on.

If you film with two cameras simultaneously a lot for you productions, then having only a single camera can feel a bit limiting. BUT, in general, Live EVENTS are in particular the thing I think more than a single camera is mandatory for a quality product. If you are doing staged scenes for commercial work or music videos, a single high quality camera that vastly outperforms picture quality of your previous cameras is the way to go... in my opinion. For real commercial work and music videos, I want the highest quality I can afford and the R5 C's RAW is truly has undeniable mojo that really does rival my RED. But he R5 C has auto features, does better in low light, and offers higher resolution.

Great, thanks! That auto focus has improved quite a bit over several firmware updates and I am very satisfied with it's performance. The RF glass does work the best BUT YES, I also Canon's adapters for EF glass with much success on some of my older EF lenses. Definitely a viable path. You will lose AUTO FOCUS at 8K 60p if you are only using the internal battery. If you use an external battery, you still have auto focus there.

Both Sony and Black Magic are fantastic too. I used 2 Sony Cameras that I still own, for MANY projects building my business. I eventually got a RED. Then I found canon color more easily matched my RED's color science at affordable B-Camera options. Now that we have arrived at cameras like the R5 C that rivals the RED directly but has all the benefits I point out in this video, I am just really loving Canon. I still think SONY makes fantastic cameras. I would like to own cams from every manufacturer if I could. But... the Canon and RED arsenal is where I am just at with my business currently. Black Magic certainly makes great looking cameras. But with how much still needs to be done manually on them when operating with auto focus, image stabilization, etc., I lean towards using RED. A USED RED that has filmed many theatrical release films has gotten insanely affordable and you can charge more with client work. The Dynamic range and color science... I like more than Black Magic.

A massive part of how I pull off my productions predominately solo relies on using 2... and even sometimes 4 cameras catching stuff. So while I am only manning one camera, the others are mounted on tripods, counters, etc.. When I do hire another shooter to accompany me for the day, I usually have them use my camera. This keeps my cost down and I know how to work with my cameras in post to match, even if different brands. You can totally get Sony and Canon to match very closely for most projects. It really depends on how you film but personally, I would keep what you got until you were at a point of being able to only let one of the cameras go. The F55 is SUPER LEGIT.

Question on the R5C since I see you do automotive shoots What is your workaround for remote camera control? My issues is any time I need to adjust the iso, aperture or shutter angle I need to stop the car and get to the camera. Have you tried the WFT battery grip?

I am in the same boat on that unfortunately. But, as a general rule of thumb, if we are going through lots of tree cover then to open sun spots, I put the camera on AUTO-ISO and assign it to not go past 3200. I film in 8K RAW exclusively when doing car to car filming for maximum zoom in/crop options. I also usually use an an aperture limited to an an f/4 or higher so the WHOLE CAR is in focus. Probably find myself shooting between F5.6 to F/8 mostly. This also showcases the background scenery more. For Auto Focus, I find using the larger rectangle box point focus to work the best. I usually keep it center but a little below the vertical half way mark of the monitor. This allows me to frame the car with just enough road in front of it, but show a lot of the landscape around it. With the 8K RAW, I can reframe to put the car on one side or the other of the screen usually, if I want to do that. I use my PHONE as the monitor control while riding passenger. I use ACTIVE TRACK a lot. I usually set my focal length on my RF 24-70 f/2.8 between 35mm or 50mm for most shots shots. I use 24mm if we are doing side by side filming on a 2 lane road. I use a Vari-ND filter instead of a Polarizer. I will have to look up the WFT Battery Grip. Not familiar with it. Hope that helps buddy!

Definitely going to try out the auto ISO 🔥 I shoot mostly in raw myself as well so this is going to help tons. F4-8 is what I usually shoot at. For focus I just turn off the face detection and tracking and let the camera determine what should be in focus and 9/10 times it chooses the car so I’m happy with that 👏🏼 active track is a dream too! Works really well a lot of the times but not on the high end when using the 24-105 2.8 I shoot it all in horizontal for the same reasons too and crop in later for vertical if needed. That’s where the 8k really shines imo. Appreciate your detailed response honestly! Sub’d!!!

Thanks and great question. I use a B+W Vari ND filter 90% of the time and and a B+W Polarizer when filming lit studio shots of the cars to push around reflections. That it... but I do like adding DIFFUSION in post when color grading on a lot of shots. I use RED GIANT suite for that and stay in Premiere. A lot of the punch is how I work the amazingly juicy codecs the R5 C offers, with color grading.

Sure, I will add that to my list of vids to make in the near future. Actually, I will be filming with it again in Vegas next month during SEMA. I will try to get some BTS footage of it then while in action. But just so you know before than, I use the DJI RS3 w/ Raveneye wireless transmitter sent to my iPhone for mobile pitch control and active track, 24-70 RF F2.8 set anywhere from f/4 to f/8 at various zoom ranges over the day of filming, and film all of it in 8K RAW. You will absolutely love having the cropping ability in your edit with cars driving far away to close.

I might end up with the R1, god help me. Looks like it has a native ISO at 12,800 that looks beautiful. Maybe better than 12,800 on the C80. Also the 60p is oversampled. Only 6k, but more than enough for me.

I’m interested in this. I have L EF lenses but it won’t allow me to shoot 8K… there’s a lens issue message related to power. It’s greyed out and can’t be selected. I use a dummy connected to an outlet or V-mount and nothing gives it the necessary power. I’m at a loss

Bummer! Have you updated the firmware on your R5 C? I use EF lenses and have autofocus and IS using the CANON Adapters. I have not tried using 3rd party adapters which would be my next question for ya... are you using Canon's own RF to EF adapters to ensure maximum compatibility?

For the last year, since I got it, 80% of the time I am using my 24-70 F/2.8 RF. Before that, 80% Of the time I was using a 16-35mm F/2.8 EF with Canon's RF to EF adapter that has Vari-ND wheel. Then I occasionally used some of my Rokinon Cine Primes that are the CHEAPER ones ranging from $350 to $750.

That's exactly where I landed. For the right project, I might be convinced to go for the C400. I just still haven't seen an image out of it that I thought... "WOW... no way I could get that on the Canon R5 C". Not saying that won't eventually happen, but haven't come across that WOW BEYOND factor yet... and it would be a drop in resolution.

It does not offer it while you are filming. You can select CLOG 2 in your NLE (editing program) in your RAW setting under GAMMA. This is how Gerald Undone achieved 13 usable stops from 8K RAW on a 4K timeline.
