After the Falklands the HMS Invincible came to New Zealand. We gave them a good old Kiwi welcome and sent out a welcoming committee of Skyhawks to do an air raid when they were off the coast. They didn't pick us up on radar or even see us coming. They couldn't scramble the Sea Harriers in time. A couple of Sea Harriers stayed on shore at Ohakea and did air combat during the carriers stay. Our pilots got kills on the Harriers. One thing to remember is pilot training and the right equipment. We had sidewinders on our skyhawks and good training, it counts for a lot. The Harriers tried "Viffing" hover trick on us as well but it didn't work because we knew it was coming.

@@KevinJDildonik The USN Aggressors used the A-4's to play the role of the MiG-17 a subsonic daylight dogfighter. In this it's a pretty good analog though the A-4's roll rate was insane. Many of the A-4 drivers at Topgun and the aggressor squadrons were also F-14 drivers and knew everything about the F-14's weak points and strengths and knew how to exploit them.

This kind of thing happened with New Zealand and Australia. We (New Zealand) had the A-4K and the Aussie's had the FA/18 legacy Hornet. We got plenty of Kills against them in war games. Flying the A-4 to it's strengths is key.

This is the best video you've done yet of BFM combat. Great job of talking us through your thinking WHILE flying the aircraft! BTW, many years ago I was flying a medium cross country training flight on the way to getting my ticket with my flight instructor in the right seat. We were transitioning through the Ontario, CA ARSA when I got a notification of traffic nearby. After looking for the "heavy" for 15-20 seconds I called "NO JOY", whereupon my flight instructor started laughing her ass off at me. Turns out my traffic was a 747 on a very long straight-in approach, but was behind the A pillar in my Cessna 152 and as I turned a bit to try to find him it just kept him hidden, so yes, I failed to viz ID, not a TomCat, but the World's largest aircraft at the time, a 747! Lesson learned, I started moving my head all around the cabin clearing my flight path. I now have a profound appreciation of John Boyd's decision to have NO viz obstructions in the F-16's canopy. (One of many great Viper design decisions, which I happened to recall the other day, was based largely on interviews Boyd did of Korean War pilots. Kelly Johnston of Lockheed claimed he based the design of the F-104 on the same data. Hard to imagine two aircraft more different in design, yet supposedly, based on the same information. I think time has proven Boyd did the better job, although Hillaker says if they'd made the F-16 Boyd wanted, instead of the F/B the USAF wanted, they'd have sold no more Vipers than Starfighters. Things that make you go "Hummmm...")
@LongShotChannel3 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much. Yeah i dont know y they choose this design to haev 4 of those pillers in a fighter. Even in cars it is very restricting sometimes. But thats a funny story. I litterly just adjusted my Track IR profile so ill be able to move my head in the cockpit better just because of that. Cheers and thanks again.

As small as the Scooter is, it can take off with 8500 pounds of ordinance, which is 500 more than a WWII B-17. The 20mm cannons it carries are derived from the Hispano-Suzia, used on some British, French and US fighters in WWII, due to it's compactness. Most fighters were large enough to carry revolver or rotary cannons by this era.
@jbepsilon3 жыл бұрын
According to wikipedia, Israeli and Singaporean A-4's were equipped with twin 30mm DEFA or ADEN revolver cannons instead of the 20mm ones. A rather massive improvement in cannon punch!

The A-4's jet engine is tremendously more powerful than the B-17's piston engine. Much more powerful than all 4 of the B-17's engines put together.
@reidmortensen26293 жыл бұрын
I wonder which version of the A-4 they used for the flight models. The later versions they used in aggressor configs were beefed with much a larger engine. It would be interesting to know; as power to weight plays a huge roll in this kind of fight. An extra 3000lbs of thrust would have made a difference.
@roijoi69633 жыл бұрын
Looks like ~ 2,300+ lbs thrust, but still a nice bump up. Speaking of that, I noticed a few weeks ago the F404 and F414 engines will both fit inside an F-104 Starfighter with ~ 54" of length and 4" of diameter to spare while thrust goes from 15.6 to 22k. Throw in a SABR AESA radar, DL and 6 AIM-120C/Ds and you'd have one hell of a missile hurler. The icing on the cake though would be a FBW system that makes the tail a lifting body, bc the 104 sure needs some more lift, even if the new engines would almost offset the weight of ALL 6 of the AMRAAMs. With leading edge slats and spoilerons, the Viper's flight control computer would probably be Plug & Play for the 104.
@reidmortensen26293 жыл бұрын
@@roijoi6963 There are countries that were still messing with the 104 for YEARS after the west stopped supporting the type. It seems that some of the most inventive improvements come from other countries on our frames. The viper upgrades, the blueprint for the strike eagle, the phantom-II variants out of Israel are outstanding examples of this; but I know there are countries running upgrades on tiger-II and freedom fighter, 104, etc. The detailed knowledge you shared is impressive in a cool way. The missile carrier option would be something to consider, particularly if you could automate or otherwise remove the human from that plane. A datalink computer could slave it as support aircraft to nearby AtG assets. Imagine: A-10C+ en route to battle space with F-104 spec’d to your description to engage the pop-up fighter support in contested battle spaces. The hog drivers could engage those air-to-air threats from their cockpits but firing weapon systems launched from those F-104s. It’s a cool concept. I love the idea of using existing systems to make “mid-step” fighters.

New Zealand had the A4-k with the old J-52 turbojet. We frequently got kills of F-16's, F-18's, F-5's and even the Sea Harriers that were in the Falklands war. The key with the Skyhawk is fly it to its strengths.
