Since no one seems to have answered your question about the A4 spoilers. They only operate on the ground (weight on wheels). When switched off they are closed. When armed they should open when weight is on the wheels and the throttle is below ~70% from memory. They are designed to dump the lift after hitting the ground on landing (yes; there is no flaring in the A4). They are armed as part of the landing checklist and of course the pre takeoff checklist (for aborted takeoff). Cheers.

I second this. However, I noticed that this aircraft has both spoilers and speed brakes. I would have expected the functionse for these to be fulfilled by the same Device. Speed brakes are used during dogfights, but also for slowing down on approaches of any kind. But to my knowledge, speed brakes and spoilers are the same thing.

Funny how in British pronunciation words 'guard' and 'god' sound exactly the same. Got me a little confused when Cap was talking about the radio and how you may listen to 'God' :)

Not strictly true, the British pronunciation of 'God' has a harder sounding O, but the Brit 'Guard' sounds very similar to the US 'God'.

Yes fuel probe light. I work on a few privately owned A4s. Making them look like Argentinean Armada and Airforce variants. I have access to flight manuals, maintenance manuals and pretty much anything you could ever need to know. i:. Min /max flight envelope, different procedures, and stuff like how to toss bomb and over shoulder the bombing. Let me know if I could be of any assistance. love the vids Cap!

Whoa...a lot of people have no idea what spoilers are. There is a reason 'spoiler' and 'speed brake' (or 'air brake') are not interchangeable and some aircraft have both working independent of each other. Its because they do very different things. Spoilers 'spoil' lift and are designed to have almost no effect on speed or pitch. They reduce induced drag by quickly changing the chord line so, when in flight, your aircraft will simply sink faster without slowing down or changing your pitch - actually you may notice in the F-14 that you will speed up slightly from reduced drag and increased sink rate. To my knowledge the A-4 cannot deploy spoilers while in flight, unlike many other aircraft such as the F-14. When armed for landing, they automatically deploy when weight is detected on the wheels to reduce the change of bouncing. This is especially helpful for 'spot' landing like landing on a ship or in the case of airliners to get more weight on the wheels faster (by dumping lift) for better wheel braking. Spoilers are not speed brakes and do not create down force, however they do reduce the lift of the wing. Some aircraft use spoilers for additional roll control like the F-14 and many civil airliners - and still a few other aircraft use spoilers alone for roll control. The A-6 Intruder, MU-2, and later versions (all currently flying models) of the B-52 have no ailerons - only spoilers. An advantage to spoilers over ailerons is they are lighter and have no adverse yaw effects from the differential induced drag caused by spoilers - meaning they are slightly more efficient since all they reduce induced drag (the drag that is created from lift). The trade off is the aircraft will not rotate around its center of gravity when rolling but in stead will or drop slightly toward the lowering wing. Spoilers in NASCAR are used to reduce induced drag meaning the cars will go faster and are less likely to create a low pressure area above the car (A.K.A 'lift') but again - they do not create down force. It was believed for many years in the automotive industry that spoilers create downforce, but only when cars were placed in wind tunnels was it discovered that they do nothing for downforce, only a wing like those found on F1 cars are capable of redirecting airflows upward to create downforce.

I think Fuel Trans is specifically for if you're flying the Skyhawk in the Fuel Buddy setup where you're acting as a fuel tanker, which was actually a thing that they did with this little guy.
@SPFLDAngler
@SPFLDAngler Жыл бұрын
They used the A6 for that as well. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s just a thing they do with all their strike aircraft. Considering it’s kinda difficult to get a big tanker to orbit a carrier at lower altitude.
@SPFLDAngler
@SPFLDAngler Жыл бұрын
Also now that I’m thinking about it. When I was doing an in air refueling with the F16 it also had that Fuel Trans switch on the panel. So maybe it’s just that all jets are capable of transferring fuel to another jet? I think they need to have the boom installed though I’m sure that’s not standard equipment.

at 3:10, the item on the left console is a LABS timer. This is where it was located on the A-4M's that I worked on. It seems like this is an error in the model when one is also mounted on the instrument panel. Also, the term used for the HSI is the BDHI, "bearing, distance, and heading indicator". At 17:00, the white card is where you scribble down which of the UHF preset is for what; i.e. one for squadron common, one for base ATC, one for base ground control, etc. Regarding the probe light; there is a light mounted in the lip of the right engine intake that illuminates the refueling probe when refueling at night. At 20:39, the switch is for the nav lights, to either have them flash or steady, a.k.a. "STDY". The little toggle switch on the outboard side of the throttle grip also allows the lights to be briefly turned off and on. I think the intent was to use them to signal other aircraft.

The "spoiler" in the A-4 is actually a Leading-edge Slat. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leading-edge_slat It acts much like a flap (increases lift at low speed at the expense of drag).
@grimreapers
@grimreapers 5 жыл бұрын
Oh I see. Thanks, that makes a lot more sense.
@PaperworkNinja
@PaperworkNinja 5 жыл бұрын
Also: spoilers on aircraft wings. They do indeed "spoil" something, but it's the lift of the wing by disrupting airflow over the wing. It's used to help slow you down for landing along with your flaps and slats (like flaps, but on the front of the wing) when used together and you can use them per wing for roll control with your horizontal stabilizers/elevators used one side at a time. At least that's how I remember it from working on them over 20 years ago. My recollection may be a bit fuzzy.
@PaperworkNinja
@PaperworkNinja 5 жыл бұрын
Clarification: the flaps and slats don't spoil your lift; only the spoilers do that. During landing the flaps, slats and spoilers work together to slow you down. Usually flaps and slats will give you more lift during takeoff, useful for heavy aircraft.

@@grimreapers Spoilers slow you down because they spoil lift which means if you wanna keep flying at the same path you need to increase angle of atack which increases drag. If you don't increase angle of atack vertical speed decreases (makes descending quicker or a climb slower) so you lose energy either way while speed brakes increase drag making you lose airspeed like if you correct angle of atack after you deploy spoilers so they're almost the same.
@PaperworkNinja
