A 5-Minute Review of the Pikmin 4 Demo (my thoughts, hopes, and concerns)

After playing through the brand new Pikmin 4 Demo on the Nintendo Switch, I'm more excited than ever to play Pikmin 4 when it releases! Here's what my thoughts are after my experience with the demo.

I'm thinking about how if the game is this easy with just 40 pikmin, it would be absurdly easy when you reach 100 or more

my biggest fear is that the game will be way too easy, everything else i have confidence will be great the rewind time feature doesn't worry me too much though, as it feels basically the same as resetting to a previous save in pikmin 2, just slightly more convenient.

Plus people don’t have to use it if they don’t want to at the end of the day. It’s an accessibility feature really

I liked it but there's some noticeable problems. The HUD is too cluttered, the game is too easy, too much boring dialogue, the Piklopedia and treasure isn't accessible on the main menu, the underground lacks the atmosphere of Pikmin 2, and there's no splitscreen CO-OP. There is definitely a lot of good but I can't ignore the bad.

hated the demo ngl, game was treating me like a moron stopping me every 10 seconds to talk at me with a bunch of meaningless dialogue telling me shit i already know. i can’t stand when games do that. which is a shame bc i was looking forward to the game but now that it’s around and i can see how it’s going to turn out it looks legitimately unfun

Yeah but that was just the tutorial, lots of fun games start out slow.

yeah I'm loving everything but the difficulty is wayyyy too low, not even because the enemies are too easy but because the player is too overpowered, if that makes sense. The crafting and upgrade system feels like it's setting up a long and difficult game but so far nothing really feels like a threat (although I do love 3/4 of the new enemies in terms of design and behavior)

Yeah I'm really hoping things pick up right after the demo ends, otherwise I don't see myself bothering with the gear and crafting at all.

Zelda Skyward Sword has Gratitude Crystal that look an awful lot like star bits. And Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom have Star Fragments that look like star bits too. Makes me wonder if it's an intentional connection, a silly Easter egg, or coincidence.

I'll bet that the full game will ramp the difficulty up quite a bit. I haven't tried the demo yet so I don't know how long it is, number of areas, etc...

reallyyyyy not a fan of the low field cap. it just feels like a way to artificially gate the player's progress. i enjoyed the demo, but i felt like i didn't spend a whole lot of time actually "playing pikmin" the way i loved in pikmin 1-3. although, that may just be because i was avoiding picking up sparklium to avoid ending the demo. little disappointing but we will see how it turns out.

It's mainly the features like rewinding and having a harsh pikmin limit that makes me feel like the game could end up losing a lot of the risk factor.
