This song was very popular in Thailand during the 70's. It was constantly being played on a radio eventhough we do not understand the meaning. What a great tune.

I can't get over this thirteen year old comment. I wonder if the person who wrote it will ever read my comments. I've just found out that this is a Eurovision song . It's actually with what Israel competed with in the Eurovision contest in 1978 and won.

I was 8. This is the last song I ever heard, before coming to US from Israel in the 70s. I forgot Hebrew 10. but the song I never forgot. Today, 50 plus. I run across the song. Talk about nostalgia and tears. 66 days since the war started.

Growing up in The Netherlands, our family always watched the yearly Eurovision. Our two favorite songs from Israel were Milk and Honey, Hallelujah, and A-ba-ni-bi by Izhar Cohen & Alpha Beta. :-)
@StanStr3 жыл бұрын
The song deals with the way in which children relate to love. Cohen sings that... When we were children, we never spoke of love (except secretly) Who were we nice to? Only to uncles and aunts." And the poor girls suffered, Only the sweet ones were hit on. And what we truly felt, We whispered only in "B-language" He compares this to adulthood, where he realizes that... Love, it is a beautiful word A beautiful prayer, a language Love, it is good to me It will overcome all And we will speak the language of love. I dream, and three words appear And what is the world? Three words And this is what I feel now Truly just as then - "B-language" א-ב-ני-בי או-בו-ה-בב א-ב-ני-בי או-בו-ה-בב או-בו-ת-בך The song uses the Bet language - a children's language game where each syllable of the word is repeated with a bet replacing the consonant. The Hebrew "a-ni o-hev o-tach" (Hebrew: אני אוהב אותך - I love you) becomes "a-ba-ni-bi o-bo-he-be-v o-bo-ta-ba-ch". It's like a Hebrew version of pig latin.

I cannot hear that because I live in israel and speak hebrew. But I can see why it sounds that way to people outside israel. But actually the ABANIBI part isn't a real hebrew, its hebrew with an addition of a B after every consonant.

This song is world famous in Cornwall. It opens Cornwall TV in the morning and it's the last song played at closedown (10.55pm) also the lyrics are on the Cornish flag (on the white bits, not the black bits) In the year 2025 there will be a statue standing on Bodmin Moor of Izra Cohen that will stand at 200 metres tall. There will be a restaurant in his big smile. It will serve Pasties, and only Pasties (but the recipe has been approved by the estate of the late Fanny Craddock!) Unfortunately there will not be any additional funding for a lift so a hundred children's rope ladders will be supplied in order to reach it. It's hoped that it will be more successful than the 400 metre wide plastic igloo built down Falmouth way that contained an animatronic version of Toni Basil singing 'Hey Mickey' 24 hours a day on one quarter speed at full volume so that they buggers in Devon can hear it. Proper.
Only Spain, Greece, Israel & Thailand actually seem to know how GOOD this song really is!
