Hello all! Welcome back to the homestead. In this video we discuss using the right tool to match your skill level whilst repairing the captive frame nuts on my Peugeot Expert campervan.

Being on the wrong side of 70, one thing I've come to understand is you never stop learning. Watching your content is inspiring. Thank you Ash.

It's a whole new level of skill to be able to work on stuff that gets rusty. I get jealous whenever I see mechanics in Australia, New Zealand or the South in the US working on vehicles and they are almost pristine after 20 years and you can easily do major works on them with hand tools where as here in England it would be an all day fight to the death even with air tools, acetylene and a welder.

Thanks for this. I've been fibre glassing over some holes on my van sills to hide it for the mot in a couple of months. But, you're right. I need to learn to weld. I've had the idea in the back of my head, but dismissed it thinking I can't do it. However, I think it's a must. I own a ford transit. Thank you for the inspiration.

I can tell you it's so worth it being able to weld. The basic skill of just sticking two pieces of metal together opens up so many doorways and saves you SO much money in the long run 👍

It has to be the right tool for the job. One of my uncles was struggling to do some work on a circuit board using a 200W soldering iron more suited to soldering wires together. I told him the iron was the problem. “It’s a bad workman that blames his tools,” he came back with despite it being himself that was failing. I went home and returned with my 15W iron. “This is fantastic!” was his reaction when using the correct tool.

Snapping bolts yeah oxy torch are a god's send especially if you can get in with the penetrating fluid whilst it's hot and wick it into the party. The issue with home mechanics is usually the case of do I really want to buy that special tool that I'll likely use once... Commences bodge job lol. I worked with a plumber for a bit he used to use mapp gas it's hotter than propane so it's a notch up on propane without the hassle of oxy.. just throwing that out there.

Mapp gas definitely a better option but costs way more so for now I'll just stick with the butane 😊

I quite agree, I've used crap modern chisels for woodworking, they were sh1t, I've bought chisels from 80years ago, such quality, don't buy cheap, you will pay and pay and pay to eventually get one good expensive tool.

Agree on the chisels 100%. I have some cheap ass ones I got when we first came here but now I have all my passed down tools here the difference in quality is unreal.

Sometimes it can be cruel when French people make cars. It is practically impossible to have all the tools for this. I drive an Italian car. A Fiat 500. I have the same problems as you. It's always fun when it takes five hours to remove a screw. 🤮
