Hey Sam you should try and reviewing LEGO train sets
@Deuce_and_a_half4 жыл бұрын
I wish there were more if them, but either pay hundreds for the Emerald Night or whatever it was called, or get the Hogwarts Express. I quite like the Hogwarts Express, Lego got the overall look down quite well. But they need more traditional steam engines and stations.

Lt. Robin I’ve buyed hogwarts but I kinda make a moc of it I extended the engine a little and the tender I totally remade it was more like a hall class with a WD austerity tender
@Deuce_and_a_half4 жыл бұрын
@@Kertz_osterwald that sounds awesome mate! I would like to buy another set to have 2 coaches and also maybe build a different engine with the pieces of the second Hall. Or maybe extend the old one like you have. Also with a second set I could extend the platform/ station.
@Kertz_osterwald4 жыл бұрын
Lt. Robin i kinda extended it my own was a little tricky to do cuz I wanted to stay it original as it was and I motorised it runs pretty good only the motor is in te tender so when running too fast the locomotive can derail

I have an old Triang "Polly" that I fitted a SEVEN pole "Zenith" motor to (from the 1950's). I bought a Ronald Dodd remagnetizer to rezap the motor. It runs very smooth and I fitted outside cylinders and connecting rod from a Bachmann Percy to it. I added weight so now it's over 190 grammes. It's my first loco as I'm just getting into model railways, thanks mostly to watching your channel. Cheers.
@Charmaster048 ай бұрын
Wow, that’s some dedication. The Bachmann Percy has very detailed side rods (or am I thinking the valve gear?), and it would be very interesting to see those parts retrofitted onto a less detailed, vintage industrial switcher.

Big impact from such a small locomotive. What a great model and with the pack makes them such great value. Very sharp paintwork that's for sure. Considering how much some other manufactures are asking way to much for a small loco *cough heljan*, its models like this Barclay, that show you don't need to spend big dollars to get a good quality model. Beautiful engine - it was built in 1946 and is currently at the Churnet Valley Railway. These engines were popular in quarries because of their very short wheelbase. I am sure she would not have had vacuum brakes in her working days. They were often used over roughly laid track - but they were very powerful, like your model, for their size. The oversized buffers stopped the buffers interlocking with wagon buffers on very tight curves. A very nice review.

I own the CPC version with the wasp stripes, but man, either my controllers are too old and crusty to handle it or mine is just a bit picky because it stalls on - points; - track joints; - curves; - straight track; - going too slow; basically the only way I can make sure it never stalls is if I let it run at a billion miles an hour or if it stands still. And honestly I really want mine to work because it is such a good model. Guess I'll take one for the team and have a naff one so the other models can be as good as yours!
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Hmm - I've only known mine to stall on points! Sounds like you could have a pickup problem - make sure they're all making good contact! You can carefully unscrew the base plate, remove it, and adjust the pickups that way so that they make a better connection with the wheel! Obviously make sure the wheels, track and pickups are super clean too! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

These are fantastic little models, however you raise a good point about long term storage prior to sale. I received mine today (27/11/20) and found that it ran very poorly even after running in, so I opened it up and found that the lubricated parts were bone dry and strangely the wheels were actually pretty dirty. The dirty wheels may have just been my test/running loop so I can't say for certain that the loco arrived in that condition. However after a good clean with Isopropyl and some fresh lubrication, the loco now runs perfectly!

You mention a keep-alive system a few times, and Bachmann USA actually has them pre-fitted on most of their newest DCC WowSound models, including their newest Decapods and Sc44 Chargers. So it's not completely unheard of in ready to run model trains, but might not be as necessary on locomotives that have a bunch of wheels like the Decapod.

You mentioned the possibility of fitting a "stay alive" to a DC locomotive. Should you decide to do this, please make a video of what components are required and the procedure, as I did not know this was possible! The problem of the express points dead zone also applies to the Hornby curved points R8074/5. You could attach to the loco a small coal wagon with pick ups, as some industrial tank engines did, wired along the similar lines to the Ruston's match truck. A solution for you, Sam, as you do not strictly adhere to Hornby track geometry, is to replace the express points with Peco Streamlined long radius insulfrog code 100 points. Pecketts work on these (I don't have a Barclay - yet!) and it won't involve the wiring issues that electrofrog points will. Sorry to ramble, Sam. Great video!
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Allan - I'm not sure if it is possible on DC - I've never done it! Yes you're right, the curved points would be the same! :( Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hi Sam, Score 8.80.... what score did you give the Caledonian Railway version? Which got the best score? I think both versions look good. Do stay-alive capacitors work in exactly the same way on DC as DCC, or would you need to order a different type for DC? I’ve only got DCC-fitted or DCC Sound-fitted models, some of which have stay-alive capacitors, which are very useful for getting over pointwork, but also to keep the engine sounds (steam or diesel or electric) going. I suppose it’s because you look so young, like policemen do every year(!), that it appears many people are surprised you are up after midnight! 😆 But when I was nowt but a lad I stayed up late too! Keep up the good work! Regards, Jim

Hi Sam, kind of an unrelated question, but do you know if the Hornby Select can run locos with Bachmann, Gaugemaster, or any other make of decoder, or does it only work with Hornby ones? -Taylor
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Yes they can do - as long as it's a more modern Select with the updated firmware! :D Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Out of all the locomotives this one would have to be my favorite because well it's the design and the red Livery just goes very well together

I have a question, Sam. Do you have any 2-4-0s in your collection? If you do, could you do a running session with them?
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
I don't sadly - wish I did though! :O Thanks for watching - Sam :)
@twonkfieldrailways41104 жыл бұрын
there were three main differences between Andrew Barclays 0-4-0s. these were classified by cylinder diameter, 16inch, 14 inch and 10 inch. I work on a 10 inch at railway I volunteer on but we had a 14 inch no 705 before I was a volunteer which hattons model in br and gwr green. sadly Hatton don't model the 10 inch but they do have do both 14 and 16 inch, Katie being a 16inch and the Caledonian one being 14 inch in think its great they make so many varietys I just wish they make some new livery now. any way great vid

Hey Sam, the Andrew Barclay locomotives are on a par with the Peckett but the Peckett still steals it. Here goes spotting the odd one out, 1st Molly the Sentinel. 2nd the LMS 11244 Pug. 3rd LSWR 709 Tank. 4th is Caen. and the odd one out is the J70 maybe :) :) :) Does that earn me a second gold star perhaps. I can't join the live stream on Sunday do not finish work till 3.45 :(
@SamsTrains4 жыл бұрын
Thanks Colin - yes I agree the Peckett still steals it overall, but the AB wins on mechanism because of the 5 pole motor. Very well spotted - that's correct! Many thanks for your kind contribution to the stream already - I've just seen that. Thank you my friend! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

I have an interesting video idea for you. TMRC has Bachmann 9fs for 135 pounds. You've never reviewed one of those before, and that seems like a pretty reasonable price given how expensive those Caledonian 812s and LNWR 2-4-0s are going to be.

Hi Sam! I wonder what type of load those converted warwells could carry_ Oxford traction engines or steamrollers perhaps! A great consist for a great little saddle tank I’d wager _Dave

I do like them, but I've got a few loco's were points are an issue now.. don't need any more. The only motors I know that are better than the 5 pole's are the LGB 7 pole motors ( G - gauge) but in oo gauge, they are excellent. Great review 👍

haha that's fair enough - tiny locos probably not for you then! Ahh that's interesting - never come across a 7 poler before! Thanks for watching - Sam :)

Hello Sam another great video like always I just like to ask you for your opinion on something I'm getting my first hornby train set and then after that I can get one locomotive and my choices are a terrier , Adams radial or a m7 dcc if you can give me your opinion on which one I should get

I know that Britain is rarely actually rainy, but on a nice, rainy day, with a temperature of about 45-50 degrees Fahrenheit, I think that I'd kind of enjoy a ride in an open-cab steam loco, what with the firebox being right there and all; a ride, but not necessarily working - if I were the engineer or the fireman, then I would definitely prefer a closed cab on a rainy day. Of course, an open cab would be preferable on a sunny day, whether working or riding-along. I know that the folks at Rapido have had trouble with their packaging, protection-wise - maybe they could learn a thing or two from these Hatton's boxes. Never be afraid to explain a joke - there will always be someone who doesn't get it! RIP Hatton's Model Trains 1946-2024
