If you've ever travelled long enough, or between small enough cities, you've probably experienced the joys of a layover. However, for newcomers to flying, it can be pretty tricky to figure out what you may need to do during a layover, so hopefully this will serve as your basic guide on how to get yourself onto that second flight!

There's another scenario - flying between two cities in country A but via a airport in country B. This sounds absurd, but it's actually quite common among frequent fliers in China, since in some seasons the flights between the North and South can be insanely expensive, and it's often cheaper to connect in Bangkok or HK. Most airlines don't have the right to sell such a ticket, so it usually has to be two separate itineraries, but it's perfectly fine when you don't have checked bags. 😂

Well, actually you missed a big piece of information speaking about going out to explore a city where you have the layover - the visa. Always double check whether you need a visa to exit to the city (=enter the country) or not. Usually it's not but in some cases you can be stuck in the transit zone for hours.
@KhAnubis
@KhAnubis 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely! In fact, that was one of the things I was hinting towards with the final point about transiting between different airports, which is that it can sometimes take practically forever to go through customs (with or without a visa).

I think this video missed some key details for those traveling to the United States. In many airports, especially those in Canada, international flights to the United States can occur in a separate, secluded area called a "preclearance zone". In these cases, rules are a little different: you go through US customs and immigration before you depart from the US, meaning you arrive in the US as a domestic passenger. In terms of transiting, here are a few examples: A: Flying to the US via a preclearance airport in your home country Here, you will take your first flight as a domestic flight, however, after you arrive at your layover airport, you will follow signs to US gates (sometimes called Transborder gates in Canada), go through security, then immigration/customs, then you will take your flight to the US, where you will arrive as a domestic passenger. B: Flying to the US via a preclearance airport in another country Here, you will take your first flight as an international flight, but at your layover, you will still have to follow signs to US gates, go through security again, then immigration/customs, then finally take your flight to the US, where you will arrive as a domestic passenger. PLEASE NOTE: You CANNOT under any circumstances leave a preclearance zone once you go through US immigration. You are technically already in the United States, meaning that if you were to leave the preclearance zone, you'd be entering the country of the airport illegally. The only way to mitigate this issue is to go through the immigration/customs of the layover airport's country, and this is only ever granted in special circumstances. Only enter the preclearance zone if you are waiting for your flight, but give yourself enough time because lines are often long.

I've booked flights home to Philadelphia from Hawaii and purchased each leg separately (OGG to SFO, then SFO to PHL) with 3 days in between, so that my layover was a weekend trip in between my trip home. Not really a layover, just breaking up the trip home into separate trips. That was easy to do in San Francisco. My first trip to Hawaii via LAX however, was crazy. I had a 2-hour layover in LAX but had to exit the airport, get on a shuttle, then go through LAX again in the International Terminal, which meant more security, and then to my gate for Maui. I guess someone forgot to tell LAX that Hawaii was still part of the USA.

I go through Hong Kong all the time. I know exactly which bus takes me to the restaurant I like for lunch. I go through immigration and customs, but when I continue on I don’t have to get my bags and recheck them. HKG has special lines for international transfers that avoid immigration entirely, but most of the time my layovers are intentionally long enough to leave the airport to catch the bus to lunch. HK immigration takes me 30 seconds or so (thanks e-channel!). Yeah, I know there’s Airport Express trains, but the bus has a nice view on the ride from Lantau into the city and it goes directly to the restaurant (and directly back after).

I have done transit in Canada as a 3rd country. It was a little confusing since I’m a New Zealander that hadn’t traveled to North America before. I expected it to work the same as Australia, Europe, or Asia. I was travelling Tokyo Haneda to Denver via Vancouver. Rather than going through customs to enter Canada or a transit area, I went through US customs and immigration in while in transit in Vancouver before I departed and entered Denver as if it were a domestic flight. This might be a special case as Denver probably doesn’t get many international flights. I did not have to collect my bags in Vancouver, they checked all the way from Tokyo but I was required to have an ESTA for BOTH the US and Canada before departing Tokyo (despite never entering Canada). Otherwise the transit area was like anywhere else in the world and used Canadian dollars (despite being behind US customs).
@jaychoi4973

Anyone who enters Canada via a plane needs ESTA. I think it’s just a cash grab for those connecting passengers, especially when you consider that I didn’t need ESTA when traveling by land.
@TomKellyXY
@TomKellyXY 5 жыл бұрын
I’m not even sure I needed one. I went straight from the international arrivals (through US customs) to the transit area. I never went through Canadian customs or entered Canada. If I did this in Hong Kong for example, I would not need any documents for the local government. I still have no idea if it was required for that or if the check in counter simply wouldn’t let me leave Japan without it.

@TomKellyXY
@TomKellyXY 3 жыл бұрын
@@anamilenacanote529 Honestly, I have no idea. My destination was in the US and I had already visited Hawaii and completed the ESTA process (an an NZ citizen). I didn't even consider getting a visa for Canada but the airline check-in counter would not let me board my flight unless I had one. I was lucky to be able to do it online (and it's cheaper than the US one). Check with your airline and local US embassy/consulate before departing to be sure. Embassy websites are also helpful. You can be required to have a visa for transit, Australia for example does this for muslim-majority countries.

Important thing to remember about layovers: remember timezones! Don't be the guy who thought he had a two-hour layover when it was only one hour and ends up stuck in North Carolina for 7 hours because he forgot he was in the Eastern Time zone, and not Central like his origin point and destination. _Totally_ not speaking from personal experience.

One thing you missed, and I’ve experienced this myself, is on some international flights with a layover in another country you may only have to clear customs/immigration in one of the countries depending on the country. I connected through Zurich on my flight to Rome, and we did immigration in Zurich but we didn’t have to do customs/immigration when we got off the Zurich-Rome flight. On my Ecuador trip, I connected through bogota both ways and in bogota passengers connecting from one international flight to another didn’t have to do customs/immigration. As for connecting from one international flight to non-US international flight in Canada (from my experience, and in Toronto at least), you do clear immigration but you don’t have to clear customs.

Depends on your route. If both legs are flown by the same airline they'll probably check your bags all the way through automatically. If you are given your bags back at the second airport (i.e. changing airlines, customs, etc.) then you might be given the option to re-check your bags Take this advice with a grain of salt though, as I am someone who tries to avoid checking bags as much as possible

During my first trip to Disney World, I flew on Delta from Newark EWR to Orlando but had a stop in Atlanta, the world's busiest airport. It was hectic. They kept changing gates (making us walk back and forth several times), changed planes, it was severely delayed, and there were a lot of people. It was awful. And what did they give us after all of that? ORANGE JUICE, a small glass of orange juice. Thanks, Delta. We also had a connection in Cincinnati (although the airport is actually in Kentucky) on the way back but that one was fine and relaxed because we had no problems there

Changing gates can be a bit of a problem in Europe, too. Gates are only announced about two hours before the flight, with passengers expected to wait in a common area beforehand (wish I had known that my first few times). I do remember being in Istanbul-Atatürk airport and finally finding my gate to Berlin, only for it to switch to Baghdad (or probably Medina, I don't fully remember) and making us find the Berlin gate all over again.

That sorta depends on the airport and what country you're going through. Generally your checked baggage continues through the airport (if you're staying the night in the city, your bag is spending the night in the airport), but there are some exceptions, like if your layover sees you entering the US (e.g. Paris to New York to St. Louis), because they give you your bag so it's on you during customs, after which you can presumably take it with you before re-checking it.

Good thing to know: Toronto Pearson Airport (YYZ) now has an official US Customs Station allowing full processing before you even set foot (or wing) in the States. This is the way to return home if you can't stand the cattle-call antics at major US hubs :)

This has been a thing for years and it's not just YYZ. It's canadian airports that fly to the U.S. in general. YUL, YYC, YEG, YHZ,YOW,YVR,YWG all have it.

LUGGAGE TIPS 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 Tie three or four colored ribbons around the handle to your luggage to warn others that this is not their luggage. People grab luggage at the turnstile and take it home before you ever see it. Anywhere you put your bag, it could be grabbed in error. Example: overhead compartment, unloaded from the bus, at the hotel lobby, at the airport turnstile... These ribbons make your luggage different and EASY TO SPOT when the piece is surrounded by 35 other cases unloaded from the bus. Using 4 ribbons make it immediately different than other cases with 1 ribbon. Use 1” wide ribbons 14” long and not longer. Cut the ends at 45 degrees. Tie the ribbons as a sandwich, as if they were one ribbon. Use a man’s tie, a half Windsor knot for the best look. After it is tied on, the total length of the ribbons will be about 5 inches from the handle. This is too short to catch on anything such as rollers. Scissor cut trim the ribbons to cascading different lengths after they are tied. Put a drop of Super Glue at the end. If each ribbon is slightly a different length by 1/4” the color layers will all show up no matter how they drape. You can see these ribbons from 40 feet away. Perhaps tie TWO handles or RINGS top and side of the case. Tie using a HALF WINDSOR KNOT to the metal buckle ring of the handle. Learn Half Windsor knot tying: It is the 2nd example in this video kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmHcmWiogKdsoqc This knot does not loosen. Put your phone number on one ribbon using a fine point permanent Sharpie. Example: “Owner 454-333-7878” No personal name necessary. No address necessary on the ribbon. Choose one ribbon with an unusual pattern or fabric to really make it unique. The 4th ribbon could be black color. Stand by the output port of the turnstile to reduce the chance of someone else grabbing your piece. Tie your skiies, duffel bag, backpack and what ever else with matching ribbons-even your computer case. If you are a Travel Agent, you could hot gold stamp one ribbon with your name and phone number. Send them a set of ribbons, red and blue and BLACK to your customer as a gift. Record this gift in your database so you don’t duplicate yourself. Buy a gold hot embossing machine. Gold emboss your business name on the BLACK ribbon. Put the customer’s name on it if possible. Pleasant color combinations: Red, white and blue Chartreuse and purple and orange Orange and light blue Orange and yellow Gray and pink Green and yellow Red and Green Red and Gold Light blue and light green and white The 4th ribbon could be white, gray, black, tan Tip #2 Take a cell phone picture of the ribbon tied on. Then another picture of the full luggage piece. You now have a way to communicate “what it looks like” if someone is tasked with searching for it. You can show this picture to the searcher or attach a picture to your report for lost luggage. Take this picture outside in direct sun not under neon lights. Tip #3 Place a strip of colored duct tape on the inside lining to your case. Put TWO pieces in DIFFERENT places such as INSIDE a pocket to the case. If you dare, put your phone number DIRECTLY ON THE FABRIC Liner of the case WITHOUT USING TAPE. Or, put your name and phone number on this tape. If all identity is stripped from your case, you have this to show. If someone steals it and rips off identity tags, you can show the police officer the inside tape... To be sneaky about the tape, put your phone number on the STICKY side of the tape. Nothing is on the surface side of this tape. Tip #4 Put your phone number on a 2” x 1/2” piece of fabric or plastic sheet. Use colored Duct tape, such as black or red or neon, to tape this message to the top side of the handle. This message is under the tape hidden from view. The lettering does not touch the sticky part. Wrap it 2-3 times. Also include Tips 1,2,3 above. If you need to prove identity of the case, just unwrap it and show. Tip #5 ADDING UNIQUENESS 4 ribbons 1 designer ribbon colored taped handle stencil SPRAY PAINT a 2 1/2” stencil letter or number or word or your initials to the suit case exterior surface in addition to using all the other ideas here. Stencil spray paint a letter to the TOP ribbon. Use ribbons that are wider or more narrow than 1”. Put a travel sticker on the case. Tip #6 WEIGH YOUR OWN Scales accuracy varies at different airports. If you are even 1 pound over, you pay. So, regulate yourself. Found on Ebay, buy a HAND HELD DIGITAL SCALE It is less than $15. Tip #7 GPS TRACKING DEVICE Duct tape to an inside pocket a GSM GPS Tracking device. Find them on Ebay. Your iphone can tell you where your luggage is. Is it in another city? kzbin.info/www/bejne/p3vOhoaEfqemhpI .
