Your point about pack weight staying at 30 lb or less is well made. Ultralight/light gear is a relatively recent thing so hats off to all those who did this trail in the days when packs were unavoidably in the 40-50 lb. range. That is indeed dangerous on such a muddy, rocky, rooty trail.

Yes I’d imagine this trail would be MUCH harder and more dangerous with a heavy pack. And pretty much everyone we saw out there still had an enormous pack. I think it’s a lot of people who may not backpack often so don’t want to splurge on gear, which is understandable, and also may not know how to pack for a trip like this.

Oh yeah I felt bad for some of those people out there with their heavy packs! I'm definitely grateful for all I've learned and for lighter gear. I hope people will watch and heed her advice.

Def hit the enchanted valley while your up here. I literally (like minutes ago) just got back from a 30 mile hike through and it was nothing short of - dare I say - ENCHANTING. Had the twilight-sequel foggy vibe the first couple days but had sunshine for the last morning and all the way out. What a trip!
