Is Yod often used as a vowel? Also, when do you use Teth (ט) compared to Tav (ת)? Most of what I’ve seen is Teth at beginning of words and Tav at the endings. Is this correct? Thanks.

The letter י: Yod is often used as a mother of reading (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mater_lectionis). The letter is a part of the hirik male and tsere male vowels. You can learn more about Tsere male here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hIitm6ColN55nbs It is an often-used letter, I believe at least in the top 3 used letters in the Hebrew alphabet, both as a consonant and a vowel. The letters ת and ט: In modern Hebrew, there is no difference in the pronunciation of the letters Tet and Tav. But there used to be a difference. While Tet used to be pronounced in a more guttural fashion, similar to the letter Ta (ط) in Arabic, the letter Tav is coronal (I believe it is coronal. I may be wrong). Tav at the ending has to do with inflection and declension. I believe that since Tet used to be more guttural, you can expect to see a Tav in front of certain vowels (It is hard to pronounce some vowels after guttural).

Shalom Ben, what is the best way for me to learn enough Hebrew so I can read the Hebrew in the Siddur for prayer and davening? Thanks!
@HebrewWithBen3 жыл бұрын
Shalom S Moore, Let me ask you, do you expect to learn also the special stresses, cantillation notes, unique pronunciation and all the nuances of reading Siddur? If so, I'd recommend you sign up for an expert class or take a tutor. If you want to read modern Hebrew and use that knowledge to read the prayer, you can take any reading Hebrew class and that will be enough so you are able to read most text relatively easy. Hope it helps. Let me know if you still have questions.

@@HebrewWithBen I just need to learn to read basics, no cantillations etc. So far I have been learning Alef Bet on my own and know all the letters. Sometimes it takes time to put words together while trying to remember all the syllables. Thanks

What's not true in your opinion? Do you speak Hebrew at all?
