Throughout the state of New York as well as when I lived in Taipei Taiwan I have seen many wing Chun schools, and to be honest you make the hard way more functional than any other teacher I have ever seen throughout my entire life.... My background is praying mantis which I learned while living in Asia we use trapping and the chain punch as well but you teach it beautifully

I use my chain punch in a fight one time in the pass and as I was hitting the guy in the face, he still hit me with a hook punch. Lucky for me, it did not have any knockout power to lay me out. I see that WC is open for those power hook punches. Thank You for any tips, on this.
@fightscience9 жыл бұрын
+Keith Johnson Sorry to hear you got caught with a hook punch. If you don't mind me saying it sounds like you may of used it at the wrong time, which is the point that we were making. Wing Chun Chain punching is a process of maintaining space, which often leaves you unguarded if you are not careful. So the key thing is to drive forward or to simply time your punches better, while not committing both arms into the punch. Having said that, the nature of real fighting is that you will get hit in the face, it's unrealistic not to expect to get hit in return. What martial arts training does for you (even in Wing Chun) is make you much more resilient to being punched in the face, and that's why you thought he didn't have the knock out power. So you did well... As for advice perhaps its better to find the arms, tie them up, and prevent the guy from punching you. We'll do something on the sucker punch in the next few months. Thanks for watching, and well done again.

how to increase the speed of this chain punches??
@fightscience9 жыл бұрын
Mostly by relaxation. The more relaxed your neck shoulders and back the faster your punches will be. You can also increase speed by being more dynamic in withdrawing the first punch to link to the chained punch. Hope that helps you. Thanks for watching.

Practice makes perfect my friend. Punching in the air keeping check of your body tension is the best method to develop speed. Have you tried hitting a floor to ceiling speed ball? That can help as well.

Thanks for emailing me back on chain punching. How do you feel about using the phoenix eye fist as the chain punch, because it has worked very good for me in stopping a fight sooner. It hurts like hell for the other guy.
@fightscience9 жыл бұрын
Interestingly the pheonix finger (fist) in which the single knuckle is used as a striking point is extremely effective in soft tissue areas as well as the face, but there isn't much discussion on it's use. Perhaps because it relates to the Bart Cham Do form which is an advanced practice in Wing Chun. This is effectively a whipping strike, so you could say the energy is different to the conventional wing chun centreline chain punch. Although, yes agreed it is painful in the correct striking points.

Hi boba fett, generally we wouldn't suggest using a low kick and a punch at the same time. Two limbs moving forward presents a big risk. Laap Sao and kicking works well. That is, any pulling actions or coving actions work well with low kicks. Thank you for the kind words.

What about using C Punching on a tall opt like 5'8"? Because I am only 5'4". Would it be better for my to just punch him in the groin?
@fightscience9 жыл бұрын
+Keith Johnson If you mean C punch as over the overhand punch as in boxing, that is possible but won't fit with your Wing Chun skill set or method of moving. Seems a shame to abandon your Wing Chun concepts. With that in mind, there's nothing wrong with punching him in the groin, it is a fight after all. Just don't rely or depend on it to finish a fight. Use it as an opening to set up other counter punches for your Wing Chun. Hope that helps. Thanks for watching.

I wanted to learn a punch to punch a bag in the gym. My smell finger keeps hitting the bag :( I can’t get it right.
@alexcandlin74167 жыл бұрын
I'm a little sceptical about this technique in the sense that would you be able to stop someone quickly enough at a close range before you could be overwhelmed? Would the use of a pre-emptive cross be more effective?
@ghcheong7 жыл бұрын
Alex Candlin It comes down to defensive psychology. Imagine you trying to rush in and grab hold of someone who is punching at your face at over a hundred punches a minute. It is survival instinct to cover up and protect oneself . Good offensive work can only be done with the critiria of the safety of one's body.
@ghcheong7 жыл бұрын
Also, a preemptive cross will work over long distances. Problem is, it needs to chamber back. Sifu Mark has a video about dealing with jab-crosses and basically, once both arms are thrown, the opponent can use this time to smother the distance.
@alexcandlin69837 жыл бұрын
Gin Hao Cheong a cross or hook is effective at close and long range. But against someone trying to grab you, even a small faint punch from a grapple can open up a double leg. Also against any fighter, particularly a grappler you won’t have a full minute to hit him unopposed. It works in theory but in practise it has failed time and time again The wing Chun stance is too flat for me, very difficult to defend a take down or even someone whose played rugby. Not saying it wouldn’t work but there must be things that are more effective.
@KamauRashid9 жыл бұрын
Sifu, I've seen other instructors perform chain punches to a downed opponent, say from a side mount position. Yet you advise against this. What technique would you employ in this context?
@fightscience9 жыл бұрын
Kamau Rashid Thank you for the question. We would advise kneeling on the chest or abdomen and punching with a single arm. You will get more power into the punch because you can turn the hip into the action. It is will be the same concept as a turning punch. This approach will also free up the other arm to pin, counter, or protect.

The wing chun chain punch is in-effective. Try hitting and backing up a heavy bag 25kg or more you wont be able to do it, it lacks real power. Most of the power is aim downwards due to its circular motion.

@@billybloggs3214 I'm not sure whether to waste my valuable time on this. So I will keep it brief. Yes you can punch off Man Sau, which I prefer. However, introducing the idea of punching from Wu Sao protects your space. What we call 'filling the void' in Wing Chun. In addition it also allows the potential of momentum to develop power. Now I know the system you pertain to follow. Ours is different, therefore your comment is irrelevant as you did not listen to the logic explained. Poor sportsmanship on your behalf. Anyway thanks for watching.
