Wing chun is at a disadvantage in sport,it was designed for survival, the snake and white crane are it's forefathers, the snake lineage comes out at biu tze,but wing chun was made not for sport and was hidden,it has a high leathality...it's just we are used to turning it into sport

I know some people will say the wing chun punch is weak. Well, I can say, you don't really want to punch someone full power in the head, not without gloves, and not in self defense situation. If someone is not a fighter, or on drugs a f has never really been hit, then two punches to the nose and lip, causing bleeding will shock them and make them quit. Usually. If you actually land a real, full power boxing type punch to the head and you miss the jaw or nose and hit say the top of the head, you are going to be having some loss of function in your hand. Not to mention the surgeries. And say you do land it. And it is just a stupid inebriated argument situation, you could very easily kill someone, or give them brain damage. Which is bad. But so is jail. So, I think that wing chun punch is just about right.

I know this is an older video but the concept of using the retreating hand for grabbing (I’m assuming a coat/shirt etc) for leverage on the other punch really intrigues me. I’m glad KZbin brought me to this because I had largely discounted Wing Chun as an inferior punching art. (My background is shotokan and boxing)

It’s hard to put into words the feel of this punch. I’m trained in JunFan. You definitely don’t want to play patty cake with noodle arms to win a KZbin speed punch record. But you don’t want to feel like you are pushing thru a heavy mattress to crack some eggs deep within. It’s just that we don’t imagine what it feels like to strike a face made of watery skin, covering hard bone. We can get the force timing right, to it’s usually “too much wood not enough water’ But, I’ll try.. It’s a jolt. Whip your skeleton into theirs. Splash your water bag into theirs. See.. with gloves on, we try to push thru the pillows to get to their center, this is unnecessary when our power line is just under the skin of our knuckle bones. Whip your knuckle bones into their face bones, hard. And penetrating, don’t shove them in, slap them in. It’s not a whap Not a thump Not a thud Not a snap Not a whack It’s a wang Their skeleton should vibrate when you hit them.

So the power comes from the tension at the end. Like a whip? Up from the legs and into a “convulsive grab” at the business end of the motion? And the grabbing motion is what turns the relaxation into tension. And your hand is, or is headed to somewhere close to where the back of their head currently is. I just thought I would watch this video as to explain the whole using the bottom two knuckles in a kind of squeeze and flick it out. Good video dude. The relaxation = speed. The structure = accuracy and using the economy of motion , the best path for potential energy. Straight and direct. Interesting when you break down the situation into boxes. But you know everything in that space, if it’s getting hit, it is getting hit hard. Haha sorry I just got lost thinking. But yeah man I think convulsive grab is probably a good way to describe how the bottom two knuckles almost tilt upwards .

Very good Sifu Jason!.. you always have very down to earth explanations and a realistic approach ...my Sifu always said practice for power with the relaxed "dead weight" structure first, then after that is developed train for the speed.. for that comes later. thats why I tuned in to your vid to see what you had to say about your WC straight punch. I wanted to see your take on that. I call that weak barrage of chain punches that most WC peeps use .. "kitten paw punches".. and yeah it irritates me too when MMA types are comparing us to boxers whom are training 8hrs a day, for full power punches to the head using their whole body and extension (with gloves on and taped wrists) for a knockout (their main goal), and they compare it to our punches which we are using for shock and defense..and they think that our strikes are weak and ineffective. They do have a point though with most WC schools not developing much power with their vertical chain punches and even fewer schools doing any kind of realistic free style sparing training. WC is a much different type of training for what our overall goal is.. Its simply the best for unarmed defense in the situation where you cannot wear gloves or have taped wrists. I find that i seldom use the fist though.. I step in 8 inches closer and use the other tools of Wing Chun in a similar way, using the forearms and elbows which are much more effective with that same Siu Nim Tao elbow power and structure within the strike as the fist. I agree with you also that the Wrist pivot in the punch is useless and will injure you. That wrist pivot punch seems to be featured in every vid on Bruce Lee's One inch Punch...and when I watch those vids closely I see a shock wave from knee power being used which finds its way into the punch not just the Jum sao wrist action. For training punches. I dont use a large soft bag though or even one of those dinky wall bags that most WC schools have, I punch large mounted sandbags 18 x18 inches and 4 inches thick that weigh about 50lbs so the only way you can hit that compacted sand is relaxed and with structure. On the sand bag we punch quite a bit closer, so the arm still has the Tan Sao angle in it and doesnt extend as far as yours do.. with that angle all 4 knuckes hit flat on the sandbag and leave a good sized dent. We also punch through the bag with the power extending about 4 inches through it..but still have an angle at that extension.. Fully extended punches can be intercepted, lopped and pulled so that idea is different from lineage to lineage. I was trained in Lueng Sheungs lineage and Sifu Ron Heimberger once showed up to our school and showed me the Ip Ching straight punch which was fully extended with the arm straightening and the power at the end of its extension.. quite the opposite of our punching as close as you can to the bag for full power.. I can also train all the WC hand tools with that large sandbag..so its good to have besides the training on the Mook Jong..Ive noticed some people putting rope or pads on the Mook Jong so they can punch it.. but they dont understand why that is not the tool for punches but is for Palms and other WC tools.. but even then structure has limits, how much can the structure take before something breaks?..so thats why the shape of the structure of the straight punch is what it is, simply so we can use it repeatedly without damaging our weapon. I also think that because we are relaxed, our whole body will probably bounce back before something breaks or our structure collapses. It is still amazing to me the kind of power that a Chum Kiu shift can generate with say a low bong sao into a sandbag while almost being totally relaxed..letting the shift and the "body power" do the work. That is also a really good point about bare knuckle boxing too.. Its like they had to re-invent it for these modern times.. and all the sudden bareknuckle boxers are using the vertical punch and forearms like in the old days...just like our Wing Chun does, but if you notice on the bare knuckle fights on youtube they are still taping their wrists.. Hey love the humor .. im an old guy too.. Oh and I have girlyfriend stories too.. there's nothing like a gal who challenges other dudes for you .. hehe.. good advice. So Ive been doing WC for 30 years now and still love it.. it works for what i need it to do..so why do peeps always hate on WC not working? When I went to my first WC class I was shut down and hit numerous times before I could even react. So even though I still do Shaolin.. its the WC that is my backup in a difficult situation. With the rise of all the favorite MMA techniques of choice-- boxing, thai boxing, Jiujitsu and other types of brutal attacks and holds... Ive had to research my WC to find the applications to adapt. I havent had to change traditional WC though..there is a lot of hidden wisdom to be found in the sets and principles. If my WC fails me in a hard way, then its my fault not the WC. I also consider that If I get trashed by some dude.. then I will just adjust my WC training. We all get good at EXACTLY what we TRAIN for..Keep the vids coming Sifu Jason.. really good content!

Thanks for yet another great video, SIfu :) Always learning something new watching them :) You mentioned that jolting the wrist is not a good idea. In my experience, I agree if it's in a long bridge / entry situation, but when in already in contact the wrist-jolt makes it possible to "insert" power into the opponent from a very close range! What are your thoughts on that?

The aim should be for all three to land and we train to avoid an uneven “one knuckle” focus. There’s always a risk of hurting our striking tool with a bad landing but that can be greatly reduced by careful practice (forms & drills). Oh, and sorry for taking so long to answer this…just saw it after another comment popped up. Thanks for watching!

Ok, please answer this question...Since we are all not Jack Dempsey and I understand the power line theory, “How don’t I break my hand and cause boxers’ fracture hitting a solid target such as jaw and bone without breaking my hand. Please, explain!” I am being sincere. If I catch someone’s hard bone structure with my bottom three knuckles (and I am well bare knuckle trained) how do you say there is more a problem with the wrist than the knuckles? The bottom knuckles will shatter and I know you know this. You are obviously a boxer defending Wing Chun. So please, explain it to me!! Thank you Sifu!

Hi. Not being there to watch exactly what’s happening my guess is that you may be punching with too much of an upward arc to the bag, thereby causing the pinky knuckle to hit as you describe. If that’s the case, work on making sure your delivery is a straight to the target as possible. Hopefully that helps - and thanks for watching.

You should be landing squarely with the ring finger knuckle more often than not. If your pinky keeps landing like that it might be because you’re punching in too upward a path with the straight punch. That happens to some of our guys here. It’s kind of a natural problem in the when attempting a straight blow we throw it in a “up and straight” rather than truly straight. Hope that helps.

I really love and hate Wing Chun at the same time. Too often people geht Stuck in wild theories about the movement of their little finger in a punch. Wing Chun should be Simple and direct. The Basics should be the main Focus. An some of us guys really try to invent the Wheel, but fighting stays the same . Nice Video 💪🏼

If only Bruce was around and looking at this video?! He would probably say "I don't punch like that!?" Haha.

While I thank you for watching and for your input, I have to wonder what point you’re trying to make. This is a video on Wing Chun’s straight punch and not necessarily Bruce Lee. The laws of logic - in particular, the law of identity - clearly tell us that Lee wasn’t Wing Chun and vice versa. Did you mistakenly conflate the two? Whether or not Lee punched liked this is, therefore, irrelevant to the subject at hand. Nevertheless, thanks again for the input.

The sun fist is more flexible and less vulnerable to locks, and isn't as short as the flat fist. Machine gun punches are best conditioned for power via the wall bag, not the big bag and certainly not the mook jong. I think Lee's one inch punch showy demos is most unfortunate in that it gave non practitioners the wrong idea about the art, just as breaking demos in karate give the wrong impression to the public about karate. And Yip Man fantasies on screen introducing to the broader world to the machine gun rally punches are the worst. Even the instructors fall for it. 🙄 Chinese punches are connected to weapons usage just as immobilisation maneouvres in the Japanese arts are. I'm of hakka descent. We ain't got time for machine gun hits when one punch, one kick ends the quarrel to restore peace in a community. Kungfu should end quarrels swiftly and briskly in the real world. An MMA pounding is quite unnecessary in dealing with your run of the mill social bullies.
