While it’s true that you may be able to assess what your opponent is likely to do by observing how he fights beforehand, however I don’t think it’s going to make much of a difference at this point. Professional fighters spend weeks and months scouting their opponents.they figure out their weaknesses and formulate plans. I doubt this can be done with just a few minutes of observation

As a beginner I suggest in training with the equipment on prior to the match. Not just sparring but just going through the basic exercises of single strikes strikes using double sticks doing exercises with your training partners doing it all with your equipment on so that it becomes second nature to you. As a beginner have to battle in my opinion is becoming a custom to wearing all of this stuffI don’t know how things are done nowadays but when I was competing back in the 80s we had to wear this padded jacket which overtime became heavy. Perhaps it’s easier on you guys now I don’t know. As far as gloves are concerned I recommend using the lacrosse gloves as far as grip I find them to be excellent.

The fact that you said You’re probably going to lose got my respect. In my first competition back in the 80s I was so overwhelmed that it was all I could do just to stay calm. I remember the helmet itself made me feel claustrophobic and was giving me panic attacks! I got tired extremely quickly even though I was an excellent cardiovascular shape my arm strength was depleted after one round and the amount of time my opponent struck me just totallyOverwhelm me. In spite of all this I loved every minute of it and with each match I got better and better until it was fun to do. But that took time just like you said
