I was in the fog, trying to cross the shipping lanes off Portland Maine. I had been at the helm since dawn and it was now past 10 pm. Those giant ships with those giant horns that rattled my little 25 foot sloop also rattled my tired nerves, as i blew on my little fog horn in the dark, for all i was worth. The horn was close to that model you have. It brought back that memory. I had to smile! I love your story, your video making skills and your music. Thank You

After a cruise ship vacation to islands in the Caribbean and seeing the sailboats that were able to DIY travel by water, I knew I needed a sailboat even though I was living over 600 miles from salt water. I had never set foot on a sailboat but, I'd had motorboats. To learn to sail, I checked books out from the public library. The one that spoke to me was one written in French and translated to English. The first thing the author said was he couldn't teach a person to sail by reading his book. He said find a way to sail a boat and come back to find answers to questions you have. I went over 100 miles to buy a 21 foot sailboat and a few days later took it to a small fishing lake for my first sail. It may have been that I had read enough to understand the physics of sailing but, sailing seemed so intuitive. Years and sailboats later a sailing friend asked me if I was a sailor and he knew I had 2 sailboats and I sailed. He explained, there are 2 kinds of people that sail, people that learned how to sail and sailors that are born that way. I believe I learned to sail in past lives. Maybe sailing is like riding a bicycle, you have to do to see if you can do it.

I'm so glad you added that about wrapping potatoes in aluminum foil because since I just put potatoes on the oven grill unwrapped, at first I had no idea what you meant. Then you explained and the analogy became clear. I quit wrapping potatoes in anything at least 30 or 40 years ago once I figured out that the skin was better and the potato better tasting if I didn't.

Hi! We watched this particular episode with interest as we regularly keep our boat in Friesland. Where did you go to winter your boat? We didn’t recognise the surroundings and we are suffering cruising withdrawals as we are stuck home in Australia now and our boat is in Corre (France). We followed every episode from Port Saint Louis as we cruised the Saone in 2019, as far south as Lyon, and loved it! Hope to head back to Friesland next year. .

"You varnish???" - I'm wondering a little bit, normally I know the Dutch to be pretty sorrow on their boats - doing even one paint more than less. I also take in account the huge number of very old boats in perfect shape. So: Go on with your plan. P.S. I think you chose a good place for wintering and repairs - good infrastructure, good technicians and nearly everything is either on stock or will be delivered in short time.

I've never heard anybody talk about emptying the black water tank from the head before hauling out but it seems like that would be something you would need to do and want to do, right? Actually,.on another sailing Channel I saw a haul-out video where they were working on the boat and something happened with the head overflowing when they were hauled out and I was thinking to myself why wouldn't they empty the holding tank and maybe put appropriate cleaning fluids in it before hauling out? Sorry to talk about something unpleasant 🤪but I'm just so curious having not heard any Sailors talk about that on their KZbin channels 🤔
@paulsj92453 жыл бұрын
Perhaps not ev1 would like to talk about it? I'm guessing that not all boats have a black water tank. Some have composting toilets, some may have alternative solutions.

Possibly making Magic Carpet spit & shine so they can put her on the market to make way for a new and larger boat and then sail north and hug the east shore of the United Kingdom and then on to the Faroe Islands, and then on to Iceland. Or maybe they well do an Atlantic crossing and come visit us in Key West,Florida....
