Spent a day on the Chesapeake in my Cape Dory 27 beating to wind in 20 gusting 25 and while certainly loud and wet and sporty was the most exhilarating six hours I've ever spent on the boat. Very rewarding to be in those conditions and have the craft and crew feeling in sync. Nice vid guys, much appreciated.

Sometimes we show sailing, and sometimes we show the places that we're visiting. The cruising lifestyle is as much about the new places you visit as it is about actually having the sails up, which is why most sailing vlogs have a balance of both. For pure sailing, events such as the Vendee globe exist!

When we would do upwind sailing, like heading into the trade winds in the Caribbean, I would multiply the distance to the next island by 2-1/2. 100 miles of distance would be 250 miles of upwind sailing. It was amazing how often that came out close to spot on! I also remember how lousy it was to go below to use the head... It was lovely to see your excitement.

Thats the downfall of having a boat for the big seas. I'm considering a boat for leaving the bay were I sail my Soling, in which I average 5-6 knots and doing upwind at about 1.5 the distace..

For ensuring sailing on the correct tack off the anchor, it is indeed (as Aladino points out) essential to be able to flatten the main. It's often not enough to just ease the topping lift: it generally requires (if there's any decent amount of wind) that the kicking strap (vang) is tight. On boats where the preventer is usable on demand, it can help a lot, by allowing holding the boom further outboard than can usually be managed by unaided brute force. These points are absolutely crucial if, in addition to a lack of room (as in this case) on the inshore tack, there is also a shore close under the lee, (ie downwind).
@Gottenhimfella4 жыл бұрын
In truly tricky situations, especially if the boat has no engine (or it is not usable) it can be worth hitching a line to the chain when it is straight up and down, and taking that line aft on the desired windward side to come on board amidships, and then grind the anchor out of the ground with a sheet winch. This guarantees paying off on the correct tack.

I've been to that harbour! During a trip crewing for a friend taking the Staande Mast Route down to the south. Good memories, thanks for reminding me. We had to wait two days before they could open the railway bridge at the Central Station, so lots of time to explore. I remember the double quick ferry trips where the crowd surged on at one end, the ferry shot across the water and then the crowd left again from the other end, still walking in the same direction.

So beautiful! Especially because you are sailing where I have sailed lot years ago. Love to see "Het paard van Marken" / "The horse of Marken" at 14:50! I discovered this beautiful channel a few weeks ago and am spending too much time catching up from the first episode. Currently, I switching between Sardinia and the Netherlands. I love your sailing, your boat work, the trips you make and your music. And especially the comments you make which often contain a touch of poetry and philosophy. The water in the lakes is indeed a kind of soup, especially at the end of the summer, which is the result of peat bottoms and too much cattle. And yes, the Markermeer and IJsselmeer are often choppy, due to the relatively large distance and low depth. You have probably by now found out that the Dutch generally highly appreciate Canadians, which goes back to the liberation at the end of WW2. Enjoy it. A question: being Swiss/Italian and Canadian, why is Magic Carpet flying the Dutch flag? Enjoy your travelling!

I once sailed several thousand miles to windward, with breaks (heaving to) only for serving and consuming the main meal of the day, and managed to enjoy it thoroughly! Admittedly we were not carrying provisions for months in advance, and it was a decent fast cruising monohull of medium size with a deep fin keel and a deep rudder and sweet lines... and well cut sails and a strong crew.... but attitude certainly comes into it, and stopping for meals really lifted morale, and helped prevent nausea. I reckon we more than made up the time and distance lost heaving to, by being refreshed and socially reconnected, so that we sailed closer to the boat's potential the rest of the time.

Yes the Dutch certainly discovered Australia before the English. Unfortunately the Batavia expedition, which was actually going to the East Indies found it in a bad way. Also sailing upwind, as you said, IT IS fun for a while, trying to get the best out of your boat, trading speed for angle, heeled over, wind in the hair, all good, for a while.

Is the sail plan you have the original one for the boat? I'm surprised to see the boom so short and not even extending all the way to the end of the cockpit on what looks to be more of a classic style boat design. On our Herreshoff Marlin, the traveler was behind the tiller and the main sheet was easily accessible and there was no need to step over anything in the cockpit. The boom was a lot longer though.

I love watching your videos, which is odd, because I'm not all that interested in sailing or even boats. But I enjoy your adventures, and would like to share a story. Forgive me if it goes a little long. My mom was a super adventurous person, and her and her boyfriend at the time took an almost 2 year long journey on a boat maybe even a little smaller than yours. 28 foot maybe? This was mid to late 70's, they sailed out of Marina Del Rey, California all the way down to Cabo San Lucas, and all the way north in the Sea of Cortez to San Felipe and all points in between, then east to the mainland coast, south back to the Pacific and headed towards home. Maybe halfway up the peninsula they were demasted. I guess the sailing upwind for hundreds of miles finally took it's toll and the mast came down. They only had a small outboard for aux power and it was rusted solid by that point in the trip. They were a couple miles offshore (or at least close enough to shore to anchor securely) , so Pete took the avon and rowed in the open ocean to shore, found a fish camp, somehow got to the highway and on a bus, WENT BACK TO CALIFORNIA AND GOT ANOTHER ENGINE!!! Then came back and got some fishermen to give him a ride back to the boat. Meanwhile, my mom sat on the boat in the open ocean, for over a week by herself. She told me later that she was starting to question her sanity by the time he got back. I miss my mom, she was a lot of fun to be around.

@SailingMagicCarpet4 жыл бұрын
It’s mostly due to the fisheye on the camera👍🏽
@faircompetition12034 жыл бұрын
@@SailingMagicCarpet You can see it sag when it loads up . I don't recall seeing if your backstay is adjustable underway . Down wind you want it a little loose , upwind you want to tighten until the sag stops disappearing and mark it at this point so you can repeat , any more is just stressing the boat . It will take two to do , one at the bow watching by sighting up the forestay and one adjusting . No point though if it is not easily adjustable .

We do have to get the wrenches out for trimming like one would on a race boat That’s why often when cruising one settles for the compromise😜 Would be nice to have a pulley, lever or a wheel to adjust though you are absolutely correct:)
@faircompetition12034 жыл бұрын
@@SailingMagicCarpet I have a 8:1 back stay adjust or something like that - just pull a line and I can bend the mast back a few feet and flatten the main , but mine is more of a race boat. I regularly go upwind at 6+ knots above 30 deg . Weighs about 4000 lbs , aft head , walk in sail locker , same stove as you , fridge/ freezer , below decks autohelm with a tiller - quite comfortable below . Farr design . All said though your boat is more suited to your use . Something to be said for a full keel and some heft when cruising .
