This Space Weather News forecast sponsored in part by Millersville University:
www.millersville.edu/swen
Our Sun continues to keep the holiday fireworks going as Region 3519 fires off several large flares and radio blackouts before rotating to the farside. Although solar storms were launched, they are too far west to be Earth-directed. Still, aurora photographers should enjoy some aurora views at high latitudes due to a pocket of fast solar wind coming over the next couple of days. We are also watching an unstable filament crossing through the Earth-strike zone, which could launch as a partly Earth-directed solar storm, so be aware the aurora forecast could change quickly. Amateur radio operators should enjoy the solar storm reprieve, with high solar flux and good propagation on Earth's dayside, despite the noisy conditions and periodic radio blackouts. GPS users, however, should remain vigilant, especially at low latitudes near dawn and dusk, and in the southern hemisphere where GPS reception could become pretty unreliable. Learn the details of the recent solar flare activity, check out the filament poised to erupt, and see what is lurking on the Sun's farside!

Very nice. I could tell there was improvement, especially in the SFI because I've been making some great DX contacts (POTA with a station in Spain) as well as some (NVIS contacts on 80 meters) with a short EFHW antenna on only 20 Watts. Still lots of fading but it's still workable. Thank you for the heads up. Cheers and have a Merry Christmas and the best New Year ever. ❤️73's from KN4MXZ 🙏🏾✔️💯🎯

Sometimes I wonder if an ancient depiction of a comet was actually a representation of an enormous eruption on the sun that would look like a comet. Something like that should cause calamity on earth even if it wasn’t earth directed since our solar system not only goes around the sun but follows it . Anyone who seen that video “ this is how our solar system really moves “ showing our planets are also trailing the suns gravitational track.
@TamithaSkov
@TamithaSkov 6 ай бұрын
Likely not. The reason why is because these comets are typically icy (solid) bodies where the Sun can only send plasma, mainly in the form of hydrogen and helium. It is too young a star to create the heavier elements that make up solid bodies in abundance yet. Plus everything is too hot to form molecules required for solid body ejections. Hope this helps.

@@jay1bad4u Tabitha made a good point, still I believe what we are only capable of observing even with all the instruments aimed at our sun is not viewing the actual surface. Our star could have layers and beyond its equivalent to earths exosphere where sunspots are detectable like our clouds, beneath that the sun could have yet to be seen thermosphere which is it’s sky on fire and we have yet to verify its other layers such as a mesosphere and unknown amounts of layers like a troposphere. All we relate to the sun are the layers of its most outer limits like ours before fading into space.

I never heard of a hot longitude. I wish I knew what that means.
@TamithaSkov
@TamithaSkov 6 ай бұрын
It means there is some subsurface activity like Rossby waves ongoing at that particular longitude on the Sun, which can cause magnetic flux emergence. This means sunspot clusters that cross over these regions can begin growing quite quickly and become unstable. Often times, new sunspots can emerge at these longitude as well. All of this means flare potential increases when the spots cross through these areas. Hence the phrase "hot longitudes."
