Its opulence vs crippling poverty, the rich oppressing and exploiting the poor. (Very heavily summarised tbh, I raccomend reading/watching the movies!)

I had to research the theme for this year and it's based on a short story that focuses on a wealthy couple separating and hiding themselves from the "plebes" and "undesirables" by hiding behind their resources and "garden". In doing so they lament over the loss of how the world used to be (but could be that way again if they didn't horde their wealth and isolate themselves from "common folk" but they did the opposite so...). It's annoying because these celebrities and this whole production is SO CLOSE to being self aware, but they're still missing the point. Even still, this fashion review gives me life and joy and I needed that today.

That’s not really what the story is about, though. Brief summary of the story: A wealthy count and countess live alone in their beautiful villa surrounded by a walled garden. Each day, an angry horde approaches over the horizon towards them. The count plucks a crystal flower from the garden each evening, which magically rewinds time, keeping the crowd away. But the garden is slowly dying, and they know there are only so many flowers left to pluck. Eventually they run out, and the mob breaks through the walls, only to find to villa derelict and in ruin and all that’s left of the couple is a statue. The story is not about the wealthy hoarding away their money from the poor (I know there are multiple ways to interpret a story, but this interpretation just really doesn’t work with the source material, there is no mention of the mob being “plebes” or “undesirables”). It’s more focused on the fragility of their lives, as well as attempting to delay the inevitable (there is also room to argue it’s about how nature should be preserved, as the couple end up killing the beautiful garden that protected them).This makes sense for the Met Gala, as the funds from the gala go directly the the Costume Institute of the Metropolitan Muesuem of Art - which is involve in preserving and restoring pieces of fashion history. If you want to read the story yourself, you can find it online for free pretty easily. It’s only about 10 minutes, I definitely recommend it, it’s really beautifully written. TLDR: the story is not about the rich hoarding wealth. It’s about the inevitability of death and decay, and the fragility of art/beauty and nature.

Actually, Janelle at 16:21 is one of the most on-theme looks of the night. The theme, the "garden of time", is based off a short story involving flowers called "Time Flowers" that, you guessed it, have the power to reverse time. The Flowers are very detailed in the story, and they appear to have a crystal-like quality, with petals being so transluscent and thin that they look as if they could break at any moment. Janelle, Zendaya, and elle were the looks that best combined the theme with actual fashion. What I saw a lot of during the met gala was either 1. incredibly on theme but ugly (see: Lana), or incredibly beautiful but either not on theme at all or incredibly cliche for the theme- like Carrie Washington

For those who don't know "garden of time" is a POEM about a garden with roses who would protect the garden for getting destroyed. The man in black is the person taking care of the garden. So yes, they are all on theme.

Also I’m pretty sure “Garden of Time” is about a Count and Countess who spend their days in comfort on a picturesque estate while an angry mob slowly encroaches (a metaphor for the end of the nobility) and the Count and Countess pluck flowers that can wind back time to put off the inevitable.
