A Brand New Layout - Part 1
This week I made a start on my new layout. The old one is not going anywhere however, and I’ll hopefully be able to combine footage from both to make some interesting videos.
This new layout is an end to end L shape, with a small three road storage yard. After pre-building many of the structures over the last few weeks, I started by laying down some baseboards, nailing down some track and wiring up. Following this, I gave everything a thorough test using my worst performing locos and ironed out any kinks.
It was then a matter of filling in the gaps in the sleepers and making a start on the platforms. There are foam board, with Will’s stone sheet sides stuck on with plaster. In the next video I’ll create the platform surfaces using the same stuff.
That’s about it for this week. A good start I reckon!
As always, thanks for watching.

Like many, saw the empty baseboard thumbnail and read the title and panicked. Then I read the description and relaxed. It's going to be a great journey. The Dales were mostly up when I joined the channel, so seeing your start from scratch will be quite fun. Great fun to see! Best wishes!

It will be really fascinating to watch it all from the beginning. I've been a tremendous admirer of your skills as a modeler, and I too have to admit that for a second I thought something had happened to the old layout, or you had thrown in the towel and started from scratch. I've done it, so, it was a relief that the original will be staying put. One of the most beautifully detailed layouts I've ever seen. This will be fun to watch and a great opportunity to learn.

Why does every one in England lay flat track bed. Here (NZ) the track follows the contour of the land more as long as it no more than 1.50 I think they just follow the land. In some places spirals have been built to cope with greater inclines, others have double heading, special breaking engines and back end pushing. There are still DX diesels added to trains in banking pairs with three locomotives already pulling the coal trains. The gradients are an easy walk but an entire train can be on the gradient for an hour or more.
@MouldyRaspberry

I know of quite a few British layouts that include gradients so I’m not sure about that one George.

Much as I enjoy your running session videos which are so atmospheric, especially with your great sound editing, It's ones like this where we can see your creation coming to life that are my favourites. You've set yourself a high bar to be as good as your Dales layout, but I have a sneaking suspicion you'll manage it. N.B. I'm guessing from the buildings that the plan is for this layout to fit in with the Dales one? i.e. same era and located in Northern England?

Hey Lewis, hope you are well. Now getting to think about the wiring of my new layout, did you have any guide on your channel. I see on here you use what appears to be a terminal block from the controller to then run a bus wire from? Also, ooi, how did you keep these lines parallel? Doesnt look like you did anything specific other than linking two turnouts ?
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 11 ай бұрын
All good thanks Ande. As you say, I think I wired to the controller (which is in the middle of the layout) to a terminal block, then ran a bus wire in either direction. I never bothered with that on my big layout. I just eyeballed the parallel lines, but thinking about it if you know the scale distance, you could cut a bit of spare card or plastic to size and use that as a gauge.
@_RandomPea
@_RandomPea 11 ай бұрын
@@MouldyRaspberry as mine is going around the top of my cabin, I'm thinking to improve the performance of running a bus wire all the way round and spurring off it at various locations on the main line, but in your loft layout you didn't do this and had just one electrical connection? I've only got a 200mm width to play with (shelves) and I was hoping to get a double line though station in but going to be tricky, especially as I want to use majority of set track I have lying around.

The track plan is simple yet open so much possibilities as adding an engine shed near the signal box and a small dock or a coal dealer on the track in front of said signal box... can't wait to see how it will progress, and it inspire me to fight harder to overcome the health issues I am facing (as of now I am stuck in bed, unable to walk or even stand, and can only stay seated for a short time - my actual best being 20 minutes) to be able to finally start my dream layout in my future new adapted home.

Hey Lewis, as you have a new layout on the go, have you considered joining Instagram and posting the new build photos? It's a nice community, seems more friendly to me than RMweb and such like. We'd love to see progress photos of the new layout, plus shots of the original layout.

Yes I’m sure I’ll get round to making one at some point! As you say, a bit easier and more chilled that RMweb.

Hi Lewis, wow a New layout! Looks like it’s sling the similar lines of your other layout. Where will this be located is it in the loft with the other and will it physically connect to the other or virtually? Looking forward to watching its development! Cheers Gary
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Gary, it will only be virtually connected as it's in a different room. Same setting/theme though so I can film them as one layout. Hope you like the rest of the build.

Looks great so far Lewis, Definitely had to read the description in panic as the dales layout is by far my favourite on KZbin. Glad to see it’s spawned a junior layout and back to the roots of the YDMR too. If I hadn’t been following the YDMR for the years I have you’d never knew it too started as an end to end layout. Best of luck on the new build mate I eagerly await the next instalment. Regards, Ross.

You make it look so easy, those platforms well who’d have thought? I got some plywood and3x2 then thought it may be too heavy. I suppose not then. Thanks for posting, David.

Thanks David. Yeah I reckon you could use that, I just went for foam board because it’s easy to cut but ply would probably work great as well.

Have you considered changing over to DCC. Everything else you do is spot on, this dimension (DCC) would push you over the top! I've not regretted doing so (20years ago), and I thought I knew a bit then! Boy I'm still learning and loving it! As a POMEY work mate of mine used to say " It's a different gether altercase" Pomey humour, got to love it!
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 3 жыл бұрын
Cheers Peter! I have done, and when I eventual start a future layout with multiple tracks I probably will go DCC. But with this being another single track line like the last, I never need to run anything other than one loco so still haven’t bitten the bullet!

Looking good, but my heart was in my mouth at the sight of PVA and plaster being used close to uncovered tracks. Masking tape could save a potential accident, especially if anything dripped onto tie-bars/point blades. Long, gentle, sweeping curves always look so good on a layout and you've created them beautifully. Looking forward to further progress.

Hi Lewis, I was so relieved to see your keeping the loft layout, it really is a marvellous layout. So what is the reasoning behind building this new one, just because you want something new? Did you use the same methods when you built the loft layout, as I haven't seen platforms built like that before, but it was a good idea to use polystyrene layers to build up the platform height. Well thanks again for a great video, best regards Dave.
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you Dave. Yep I had an opportunity with a new space and thought, why not! Yes I used the same methods on the two stations on the big layout - I just found it works well to make curved or unusual shaped platforms (and it doesn’t cost much!). I’ll get it a layer of plaster over the top in the next video, sand it, fill the gaps and then it should be ready for painting.

Hello Lewis The new layout is looking good so far. Do you have any ideas of what you are going to calling it yet? I still have not got my loft in order yet as other priorities seem to crop up just as I get started on it but as they say Rome was not built in a day... I really liked the weathering you did in the last vlog, subtle but very effective and convincing to the eye. Stay safe, keep sharing and model on. Regards Lee@NEAR

Hi Lewis, This came as a surprise... but a very interesting one ! Great idea to develop this end station as a separate layout. The buildings look fantastic. Scratch or kit build ? Nice flowing track. You have a natural talent and it all seems so easy and strait forward. Platforms in foam board and Will's stone sheet glued on with plaster is an innovating technique. Curious to follow along and to discover the art of this build. Have fun ! With admiration & greetings, Filip
@MouldyRaspberry
@MouldyRaspberry 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks Filip. They’re laser cut kits a got from eBay. I think they’ll look the part when all the scenery is in! I’ll cover them in plaster next to do the surfaces - looks horrendous at first but once it’s sanded and painted it looks alright. Used that technique on the old layout. Thanks again, always appreciate your comments 😀
