when my dad took me to universal studio tour as a kid in late 70's /early 80's I was chosen out of the crowd with a little girl to dress in an ill-fitting Colonial Viper pilot helmet & jacket and sit in a hydraulic cockpit with a blue screen as they gave us directions and showed the rest of the tour how the special effects where done. I remember everyone laughing because my helmet was so big it kept going everywhere as we were jostled about with me saying take that cyclons. probably one of my fondest memories. was obsessed with the show glen larson basically raised me.

Most of the diehard fans of the original series (myself included) don't even like to acknowledge the existence of Galactica 1980. It did, however, introduce the concept of advanced human looking cylons crash landing on Earth.

Most diehard fans of Battlestar Galactica wouldn't acknowledge the Sci-fi Channel attempt to destroy the entire series with the soap opera crap it produced as Battlestar Galactica. At least 1980 attempted to stay with the story of finding earth and settling on it in an attempt to thwart the Cylons. What Sci-fi Channel did however is unforgivable.

and (Gaius) Baltar was set free in the original series, so another colonial citizen did the time travel stuff in order to advance Earth's technology from the past. Galactica 1980 should've just traveled back in time to prevent the Holocaust and destruction of the Colonies! Would've made a better series IMHO.
@kpc96507 жыл бұрын
true, in the theatrical film, Baltar was beheaded. However, you indicated in this clip about the re-make Galactica 1980 series, the clip (around 2 min 12) sounded like it was Council President Gaius Baltar trying to advance technology of present day Earth by time-traveling to Earth's past and introducing advanced technology. Either way, the theatrical film (Baltar) beheaded, or the series (Baltar released from the Prison Barge and left on some nearby habitable planet), Baltar did not reach Earth. While it was a colonial attempting to do that in Galactica 1980, it was an actual another member of Council of the 12 member (I think Xaviar) traveling back to Earth's past. Baltar is out of the picture.

A correction to note is that (1978) the reptilian race that created the robots are called Cylons. All of the Cylons are dead because the robots killed them all. When talking about the enemy in general the human characters simply say "the Cylons", but when talking about an individual Cylon solder they are referred to as "Cylon Centurions". Both the humans and the Cylons refer to individual Cylon solders as "Cylon Centurions". Doesn't really matter, and it is easy to miss as the show only states this like once or twice in the whole series.

You are 100% correct. The re-imagined series in 2003 was unquestionably a master piece of modern science fiction. What made it great was the fact that it was about the human struggle, with characters that looked, acted, and felt genuine. The whole thing just happened to be set in space. Another facet that is commonly overlooked by television shows and motion pictures is the physics and science of space travel. Moore and company didn't just get this right, they nailed it. It provided a depth of realism to the show that simply would not have been achievable other wise.

Ok, let's try this again. BSG was never suppose to be a weekly series. Hence why out of 24 episodes, only about a dozen mattered. ABC was hyped on ratings, thus Larsson had to streamline production. And like everything networks do, they cut production cost, thus A LOT of reused scenes (which was 8 of 10 episodes of Galactica 1980). Two, I really hope there is no movie, because it will be horrid as what happened to all sci-fi classics. Leave well enough alone.

Galactica 1980 actually was set one generation after the final episode of the original series. The main protagonists were Lt. Troy (aka Boxey, Apollo's adopted son from the original BSG) and Lt. Dillan, who were sent to Earth covertly to ascertain what aid the Colonial Fleet could offer Earth, as it proved to be technically unable to defend itself against the Cylons. Commander Adama, Boomer (now a Colonel) and Baltar (now in command of the Cylon Fleet) are in this series, but none of the other characters -- such as Cassiopea, Athena, Bojay, Tigh and others -- make an appearance. The "time-travel" aspect was in part due to a character named Commander Xavier, who wanted to travel back in time to alter Earth's history to bring them new advancements in technology to put them on par with the Cylons. This lead to a few eps where Troy and Dillan traveled back to the 1940's Germany to stop Xavier. The series only lasted 10 episodes, but if the story had been improved on, it should have at least ended with the Colonials making an overt contact with Earth, and allowing it and her refugee population to finally find a home at least.

So---Update, January 2020: Universal is still bandying around the idea of a feature film. The film is trapped in development hell, as Hollywood would say, and has been through about 2-3 writers. Jay Basu is the latest; he was preceded by Lisa Joy. Basu's had the concept for about a year at the time of this writing, and no progress has been made, at least none that would hit the Hollywood press and make enough waves to be noticed. Lisa Joy had it for at least 3-4 years before that, and made no progress at all with it. There is rumor afoot on the interwebs that there's going to be yet another streaming service (like we don't have enough already!) that is going to make yet another rebooted BSG series the "tentpole" that establishes the service. I personally have written a BSG-oriented story, one that takes into account the MMO that just died last year. I played that game consistently for a few years, and eventually drifted away when my online guild broke up and the Cylon players started being assholes to everybody. But the story I've written is in review now, and there's a possibility that it will be published. I hope I can catch Jay Basu's attention.

I agree with everything stated except your thoughts on "Blood & Chrome" - not only does it totally clash with the established timelines & *major* plot-point running through "Battlestar Galactica", "Caprica" and the "Husker Flashbacks" in the "Razor" TV Movie that sets William Adams as a Rookie Viper Pilot who only came in at the very end of the 1st Cylon War, and in doing so dismisses actor Nico Cortez's *FANTASTIC* portrayal as the Young Husker fighting in the the huge, last battle of the first war. Changing such a fundamental fact at the base of the character simply retcons William Adams from the moment we first see him in the BSG miniseries and throughout the series. Secondly, as *ALL* the Battlestar Greateria Sets were auctioned off at the end of the Series Run / filming of "The Plan" miniseries (for charity, IIRC), "Blood & Chrome" uses a *great* deal of "Virtual" and Greenscreen Sets from High Definition pictures taken of the sets before they were struck. While this *does* allow the TV movie to expand on the sets we were used to seeing but at Galactica's "High Point" as a front-off-the-line Ship of the Colonial Fleet (for example, the Flight Pod is now a large, multilevel area with two sets of "stacked" Viper Launch Tubes during its wartime status. Unfortunately, the technology is not up to snuff (and I believe the miniseries/pilot was not sufficiently funded to pull off the "Star Wars Prequels"/"300" style of shooting) - most of the scenes on the Galactica were "flat" with a noticeable seperation between the Actors and the background and little interaction due to the nature of this filming. The acting, an extremely high point for BSG not only for "Sci-Fi Television" but for *ALL* Felevision in general, was also lacking in "B&C". It has some "Vancouver Regulars" such as the outstanding Brian Markinson from "Continuum", "Mad Men", "The Killing" and numerous other projects, but other than him the acting is noticeably lacking. To me, it feels in general that at some point during the filming the Oroducers & Actirs found out that "B&C" was not going to picked up as a show, and any enthusiasm for the project took a nosedive.

Isaac Asimov was nearly talked into doing Battlestar Galactica's second season prior to its cancellation. Something Harlan Ellison was perhaps a little jealous and wanted that same offer himself, which is why he hated upon the original series afterwards. Asimov sadly didn't take the offer, because he lived in New York on the East coast, while the series itself was made in California on the West coast in Hollywood because he just hated flying! And we guess fax machines at the time we're that efficient at mailing scripts in, from across states! (shrugs).

Just from my standpoint Caprica and Blood and Chrome had a lot of inconsistencies with what the new BSG had established with what was the timeline. For example in the web series that showed Adama in his first mission as a viper pilot being the last mission of the first cylon war. Then discovering that the cylons were starting to experiment in skinjobs or oganic life after the artificial or tin cans were doing so but not understanding what he saw. Also after the original tin can cylons found the 13 tribe being original cylons trying to make there way back to the original colonies to warn them of creating artificial life after they themselves had become organic life and then crated artificial life. In blood and chrome he was already serving. In Caprica apparently the concept of one god had already existed but also the parent of a victim of a one god only terrorist attack was able to create a cylon that did not exist yet . Either though these concepts were totally new to everyone in the new BSG. So I think there needs to be a lot and I stress a lot of tiding up to be done. But don't get me wrong love the series to my dying breath. Just need to not ignore inconsistencies.

New Battlestar started off great but wandered into 'meh'. Moore seemed to run out of ideas and went back to his comfort zone of religious sci fi that he already explored in DS9. For me I liked the original Cylons better than the (usually) human formed ones. I rather have had a show that was all about Humanity trying to survive Cylon attacks from week to week, Not some religious self examination with some weird time travel thing that was never really explained, and an adversary that was more human than human. I really liked more than the first half, then it just wandered into weird. BUT The Adama maneuver over new Caprica is the coolest space ship maneuver since Robotech's Daedalus maneuver!

The remake was some of the best sci-fi ever to be on TV. There was an initial movie in 2003. Watch that. If that doesn't grab you, then you won't like the rest of it. The rest of it. Some of the best acting. Some really gritty situations that seriously take you there. A lot more realistic. Forget Star Wars. It's like they're using our present fay technology except they have space ships. Very relatable. Real names, not "legendary star child" names. Some of the more well-known ones like Apollo and Starbuck are actually their pilot nicknames. MUCH better motivation for Baltar, and much better integration into the show. This is pivotal. Seriously, Baltar. Baltar is indispensable. He's such a lovable train wreck. You can't look away. Special effects are decades improved. They look real. Whatever CGI they use, the space stuff looks real. Life and death situations all the time. Nobody's really safe. Just like real. The new complexity of having Cylons who look like people. They address this immediately. It's a continuing problem and/or plot point throughout the series. Drama, drama, drama. The characters are run through the wringer and placed in the most impossible situations. I highly recommend.

I can't believe they are going to remake this again. But then, it has almost been as long from the original series to the remake in 2003.

I would love to see a 3D movie version. The new Star Trek movies with a young crew is awesome.

When you discuss Space Operas, how about mentioning the greatest of them all, Space Battleship Yamato, otherwise referred to as Star Blazers. You can watch the originals, both English or Japanese, or the remake, which is fantastic as well.

The whole "ambitious Leader A proposes a plan, pragmatic and caring Leader B opposes it, the population splits into grand factions along those lines, and A takes his minions with him down to Earth in either (depending on one's POV) exile or conquest" EXACTLY corresponds with how Mormon theology depicts Earth was populated in the first place -- as a result of a falling-out between Lucifer and his 'brother' Jesus. In this, the plot the execs rejected is much closer to Larson's orig. use of Mormon stories as the framework on which to hang the arc of BG TOS -- although I agree the time travel thing would have been way confusing to audiences, esp. back then before it became a more common trope, and wasn't even needed dramatically.

bsg was like star trek great characters with cool personalities and were remeberable but the technology was very corny. in bsg the screen shooting of viper shooting down of cylones was repetitive. the new star trek and bsg had cool tech but not remeberable characters and terrible screen writing.

The original BSG was good, and had many interesting and compelling storylines. BSG 1980 was completely awful! It was underfunded by the network, and everything about the production showed that. The re-imagined BSG was THE best show on television, though it failed to garner much attention from a wider audience. To this day there are still unanswered questions around the mythos of the story, but is fun to think about anyway. Caprica was a decent show--in spite of being horrendously slow--and left the viewers wondering if the entire subsequent BSG timeline was nothing more than a war game being played out in the mind of Zoe Greystone after she had ascended to a higher plane of proto mechanical/human existence. IF it can be done right, I'd love to see another BSG show. It could answer many lingering questions most devoted fans have of the timeline and its surrounding events.

Everyone seems to forget the writer's strike in 2008 that really screwed up BSG's return for Season 4, and helped lead it to a split final season.

Larson had nothing to doing the reboot. He got a cheque and that is it
@lakecountynaturalist76173 жыл бұрын
Yep, and he double crossed Richard Hatch because he had a sequel set up with the actors from the originals series and at the last minute Larson said no.

In 1978, BSG was Star Wars' cheap cousin, but in 2003, BSG blew the Star Wars Prequels out of the water. RIP Richard Hatch.

I didn't like the reboot when I first saw it, too different to what I was used to with the original series but I stuck with it and found out it was a really good programme. I have all the Galactica series on DVD including Caprica. Blood and Chrome (on Blu-ray) as well as the original series and Galactica 1980 (which I actually like) and Mission Galactica: The Cylon Attack

Had they called the reboot ANYTHING, A N Y T H I N G, other than Battlestar Galactica, I MIGHT have watched more than 2 1/2 episodes. They should have changed names for characters as well.

Wow, that was 2003? I was thinking it was about 2013. God I'm getting old... Brilliant series, one of the best sci-fi shows ever. My only criticism is that only about 50% of the episodes were good. But when they were good they were AWSOME, especially the Pegasus storylines. Had a lot of boring episodes too about internal politics, but some people probably liked them.

Galactica 1980 didn't have Apollo and Starbuck as main characters. It had "Boxie" grown up playing Troy. Lt. Dillon was the other character played by Dick Van Dyke's son. As one example.

In Galactica 80, Commander Xavier is the person to go time traveling back to Nazi Germany to advance technology so present Day Earth would have evolved to a level to assist Galactica. Troy and Dillion follow him back there to stop him. In Galactica 1980, apparently Apollo is dead, and Starbuck’s marooned on a desert planet. Tigh and Omega are not part of command. Colonel Boomer is now part of bridge command.
