"Handle is the only person I want to meet before I die, and the only person I would want to be if I was not J. S. Bach." When this quote was brought to Mozart's attention, he agreed.

Thanks for sharing! I learnt a lot about his different works! The children's hospital he played for was called The Foundling Hospital founded in 1739 by Captain Thomas Corum; the institute began caring for children in 1740/41 and the hospital once covered a large part of London we now know as Camden around Russel Square Bloomsbury. George Frideric Handel also left £20,000 to the hospital, as well as making £7,000 from concerts playing Messiah; there is now a museum based on the hospital called The Foundling Museum. The museum has a permanent display about Handle on the top floor, the space is dedicated to Handle's legacy and includes his will, original music sheets and objects he owned. The collection on Handle’s work is the largest anywhere in the world and is The Gerald Coke Handel Collection.

I came here while researching Handel's Samson for a comedy. But today I'm going to create a lesson using your "neef" joke as an example of the improv principle "there are no mistakes, only gifts." Well played. Thank you for this video.

Handel has made great progress in becoming rightly Bach`s equal. Both are considered apex composers. Handel`s output is around 305 hours of music, Bach`s around 275. Haydn leads all first rate composers with 340 hours, while Telemann was most prolific at 350 hours.

By stating that writing an opera is like writing, producing and recording a movie you seem to suggest that Händel also wrote the texts he set to music, which isn't the case. That's what librettists did/do. Also, what a way to pronounce Zachow. The ch should be similar to the ch in Bach. One more thing, the 'first English operas', Esther and Deborah, you mention are oratorios, which isn't very different of course, but there's a quite clear distinction when it comes to the origin of the story that is set to music. Good point about the inventiveness.

ardelia padmasawitri In fact, it would have been better to have quoted Haydn’s views as he had actually been to England and heard more of Handel’s music than Mozart and Beethoven put together.

I'll talk about the largest difference between Bach and Handel in terms of popularity in modern times. Handel composed a master piece recognized globally and Bach did not. Oh, Bach composed some great music but nothing that would be recognized by most people particularly during the Christmas season and particularly those people who are not musically inclined. Obviously I am referring to "The Messiah" or "Messiah". I personally think Handel and Bach were equally talented. However, it just takes one piece of composition to set a composer apart from the rest. For example...Beethoven is well known because of his 5th and 9th Symphonies. BTW, I love your channel. What a refreshing view inside the mind of a master of music history. Keep up the great work.

I find it interesting that the house where Handel lived in London is now a museum devoted to his memory but Handel also shares the space with the legendary guitarist Jimi Hendrix who lived a few doors down from here(different centuries of course)and who was reported to have expressed admiration for Handel's music.Interesting juxtaposition.

One little thing: Bach wasn't well known, he was pretty unknown. He was know as an expert for organs but not as a composer. Mendelssohn made him popular but 75 years after his death.

Apparently, Mainwaring made a lot of stuff up, either screwing up details and timelines or just straight-up exaggerating, such as the degree to which Handel Sr discouraged his interest in music. Apparently tons of his assertions are impossible , as records of the other people involved disproved that Handel Jr met them I the time and place Mainwaring asserts

Lots of mistakes. Handel never wrote any operas in English. His music never disappeared- his Coronation Anthems and Messiah have been performed ever since they were written, for example. But otherwise a good video.

Great but proper pronunciations would have made it more authentic - why do Americans have no idea that there are other languages in the world?
