The entire history of video games, from their earliest origins all the way up to the end of the seventh generation, in 2013.
Emerging from engineering experimentation, the earliest titles such as Tennis for Two, Space War! and Pong helped to establish the roots of the industry.
Early arcade classics built on this, with titles like Breakout, Space Invaders, Asteroids and Pac-Man breaking into the mainstream and remaining legendary today.
Early PC titles such as Maze War, Zork and Rogue helped define new genres: and while Atari 2600 version of E.T. The Extra Terrestrial might have been disappointing, hobbyist coders continued with aplomb - giving rise to titles like Elite, Exile and Tetris.
The video game crash of 1983 dampened the home market, but arcades remained strong: Donkey Kong, Dig-Dug, Pole-Position, Q*Bert and Mario Bros. all successfully sucking quarters from people's pockets.
The mid-80s saw the rise of the Nintendo home console, starting with Super Mario Brothers and continuing with games like The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania, Metroid, Mega-Man, Metal Gear and Final Fantasy.
Dragon's Lair use of laserdisc technology gave the arcade unit graphics like none other - but a new wave of 16-bit machines would wow home users, with games such as Dungeon Master, Sim City, Shadow of The Beast and The Secret of Monkey Island.
The 1990s saw the 16-bit machines come into their own, with colourful sprites of a scale not seen before: Sonic The Hedgehog, Street Fighter 2, and Lemmings.
Strategy games did well in this era, with the first instalment of Sid Meier's Civilization and the XCOM turn-based alien tactics of UFO: Enemy Unknown.
Dune 2 saw the dawn of the RTS genre, and Wolfenstein 3D did something similar for first person shooters, and marks id's genre-defining path through Doom and Quake.
Myst was a mite more sedate, Tekken was a 3D rival to Street Fighter, Marathon a Macintosh rival to Doom and Star Fox invited barrel rolls aplenty.
The late 90s saw Nintendo go from strength to strength, with exclusives such as Super Mario 64, Chrono Trigger, Pokemon, Goldeneye, and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
Sony responded in kind with the PlayStation, and a new era of titles such as Wipeout, Resident Evil, Gran Turismo and Grand Theft Auto.
Valve shook up the PC scene with 1998's Half Life, and Blizzard did something similar with Starcraft for the RTS genre.
The new milennium was a good time for PC gamers, with a wave of legendary FPS games such as Unreal Tournament, Quake 3 Arena, and
Counter-Strike - and a host of other exclusives in Grim Fandango, Diablo 2, Deus Ex, The Sims, and Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell.
A new wave of consoles brought some new exclusives: Bungie's Xbox launch title, Halo - the much loved Metroid Prime and Kingdom Hearts - and for a brief time, Grand Theft Auto 3.
Infinity Ward embarked on a remarkably successful franchise with Call of Duty, Blizzard single-handedly popularised MMORPGs with World of Warcraft, and Harmonix introduced a sudden need for plastic guitar peripherals with Guitar Hero.
The PS2 had a couple of good games left in it, with the critically acclaimed Resident Evil 4 - and artful Shadow of the Colossus.
2006 saw a new generation of consoles, and a new wave of shooters: Gears of War, Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Halo 3, Bioshock, Grand Theft Auto 4 and Fallout 3.
It wasn't all blood and guts, however - with more family friendly titles like Wii Sports, The Orange Box / Portal, and LittleBigPlanet.
Hardcore games broached the mainstream, too - with titles like Bayonetta and Dark Souls proving popular without pandering to all audiences.
The rise of the indie game was perhaps unexpected, but provided welcome relief from the monotony of the mainstream - gems like Journey, Fez and Minecraft perhaps the most notable examples.
We bid farewell to Gen 7 with impressive open world titles such as Red Dead Redemption and The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim - and the impressively detailed settings of games like Bioshock Infinite and
The Last of Us.

He skipped everything from the ZX Spectrum's bedroom coders to FF7 bringing JRPGs into the western mainstream. No mention of Ultima's morality system, or the controversial games that created the software ratings board. No mention of Tower of Druaga or Dragon Quest, which were ridiculously influential - the first for filling games with secrets, the second for creating JRPGs. Only the FPS is covered a bit in-depth, and even that lacks important titles like Medal of Honor. Genres like sports sims and the arcade brawler are ignored entirely. And there's a lot I haven't mentioned either. It's not something you can cover in twenty minutes or a single post. His newer documentaries are a much higher quality.

Dear Stuart Brown This must be the twelfth time I watch this video, because A)it's probably my favorite vid on KZbin and B) I've watched all your other vids. Your superb voice work, minimal graphics and pace of blackouts and footage all combine to a product that reminds me of the magic that attracted me to games as a medium; a magic that seems to slowly dissolve in today's high budget game market. Now the praise will make way for a request. Have you ever considered making more videos like this one but more in-depth? My idea is something like videos dealing with respective genres, say 'history and influence of text and graphical adventures', or 'landmark puzzle platformers' or perhaps 'the best ever racing games' or 'military shooter history', even 'ten crucial rules to make a survival horror game that scares' I think much can be said when analyzing what made landmark games popular, to highlight those aspects like mechanics, adventure and innovation, sound, music and atmosphere - the things that give those games character - instead of the almost one-dimensional focus on graphics and action. Not that these are not important and exciting, but the media is capable of so much more. These are what made me excited for things like Myst, Quake, Portal, Need for Speed, Tomb Raider, Resident Evil 2/3 and, yes even Street Rods and Police Quest II. Anyway, hope you get to read this and don't find me overbearing. From: another great fan of your videos!

+Benjamin McLean Surprised he didn't mention Serious Sam or Blade of Darkness - they're fairly obscure these days but they're bloody fantastic and technical marvels at their time. Hell Blade of Darkness from what I can tell is Dark Souls before Dark Souls and Demon's Souls and I think that was where From's main inspiration came from - like seriously, playing them side by side, there's no doubt about it even if the Souls combat is much simpler but has more RPG aspects. But then again, there's so many things in gaming that it's not surprising he's missed a lot of stuff out.

A shallow and over-hyped game with missing features and a incorrect perspective of what people want out of a space sim, developed by those who say such ridiculous statements as "every atom is procedural" and parade their work as innovative when the technology that allows No Man's Sky's scale has been around since 1984. It's sad how Elite, a game made in 1984, features more depth in its economy than No Man's Sky, which was advertised with trading being one of the larger features on top of exploration.

Great list, I found a lot of my favourite games on that list. But I also feel the action-adventure genere was overlooked. Games like Tomb Raider, Prince of Persia, God of War and Assassins Creed were deffenetly influential and at least one of them were worty of mention.

surprising that there is no mention of crysis series, which obviously has proved to be a pretty standard to show the capabilities of the hardware and even project igi which was so viral in the period contemprory to late 1990's..any word on that?

Sameer Madarkar Crysis was crowded out by a host of more significant titles from 2007. Project IGI is a well-regarded but otherwise fringe FPS.

André Perez Segato He mentioned Metal Gear, the godfather of stealth games. Metal Gear Solid (while one of the greatest games of all time) was basically Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake in 3d. Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake is my favorite video game of all time so I am a bit bias. Still, MGS for the Ps1 was not really ground breaking. Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake had all the features first such as the ability to crouch, the first game to have compelling story and how a saga was possible because the story expanded to a large level (Metal Gear 1 was inspired by action films which explains why it's story is cliche), and unlike MGS1, Metal Gear 2 Solid Snake had a much better enemy ai. That is no question.
