Using two guns at once is impractical, unrealistic, and generally a liability - and yet we see pistols akimbo in many action-oriented games.
So how did such a reckless regard for accuracy originate? What was the first video game that introduced two-pistol gun-play? And how on earth do you reload when both your hands are full?
Carrying multiple weapons was once an issue of practicality - with early flintlock pistols taking quite some time to reload, pirates such as Blackbeard would not be seen with a brace of fewer than 6 such sidearms ready-to-fire.
By the time of the Old West, revolvers were the norm: and some cowboys will have carried more than one, for those situations where a single six-shooter simply won't do.
Such backup weapons were used singly to avert a lengthy reload, however - firing a weapon from each hand with wild abandon probably reserved for desperados with nothing to lose.
The blame for Dual Wield's popularity today lies squarely at the feet of cinema: with the popularity of Westerns aligned with the rise of the Action film in the 1970s, it was only a matter of time.
Action films are not noted for their subtlety, and firepower was one trait not often spared.
Dirty Harry's .44 Magnum was described as 'the most powerful handgun in the world' - and so what better way to up the ante than to double down on a second pistol.
In the 1969 film, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid each employ a pair of Colt Single-Action Army revolvers in a daring shootout while fleeing from the Bolivian police.
Another more prominent use of dual wielding in a Western film is 'The Outlaw Josey Wales', from 1976.
Featuring Clint Eastwood as the titular character, a wanted man driven by vengeance and a need for firepower that only pistols akimbo might provide.
The 1970s also marks the earliest days of electronic entertainment: the popularity of Pong from 1972 spurred development of the arcade game industry, some of which offered crude digital representations of popular culture at the time.
Video games with a Western flavour were inevitable: 'Gun Fight' in 1975 was the first - a simple shooting game, with players one and two facing off in a six-shooter duel.
One of the earliest depictions of dual wielded pistols in a video game is in an arcade title from 1979 called 'Sheriff', an early Nintendo game published by Exidy.
Clearly taking clues from the Western movies of its era - this multi-directional shooter featured bandits clearly seen swinging two pistols.
It was none other than Shigeru Miyamoto that was responsible for Sheriff's artwork - so the mind behind Mario and Zelda might also be behind the very first video game to feature dual-wielded pistols.
The Western's popularity saw decline by the end of the 70s, with Star Wars in 1977 prompting a shift towards space shooters, like the phenomenally popular Space Invaders in 1978.
There remained a few Western-influenced games, however - and titles such as Gun.Smoke on the NES applied a familiar frontier theme to the well-rehearsed scrolling shooter genre.
One suitably-named swan song of the Western's spike in popularity was the four-player run and gun action of Sunset Riders, in 1991.
With some parallels to the 1985 film Silverado, one of the characters on offer makes use of two revolvers simultaneously.
This is perhaps to position the character as a 'Billy the Kid' derivative: rash and impetuous through youth, but otherwise boasting legendary gun skill.
The neon-tinged 80s saw the displacement of Westerns in favour of the blockbuster action film - and one man had influence outweighing any other: John Woo.
His brand of high-octane gunfight was fuelled by acrobatic display, bottomless magazines - and flagrant use of guns akimbo.
'A Better Tomorrow' in 1985 was the first outing of dual pistols in a John Woo film, but it certainly wasn't the last.
'Hard Boiled' in 1992 was his breakthrough hit in the West - marking Woo's transition to Hollywood, and proving particularly influential in other media.
Chow Yun-fat features as Inspector Tequila Yuen, an undercover cop who's not afraid to get his hands dirty - an anti-hero with a total disregard for authority.
It was around this time that the foundations of the first person shooter genre were laid - iD's Wolfenstein 3D was released the same year.
With Doom's release in 1993, the now-familiar format of gun-focussed gameplay with a first-person view had taken hold - and with the influence of cinema, it wouldn't be long before we would see a game featuring Woo-esque gun-play.
Typical - you wait ages for a first person shooter featuring dual wielding, and then two come along at once.
Bungie's Marathon and Apogee's Rise of the Triad were both released on the 21st of December, 1994.

Hell yea, until you hit one of those cover shooter arcades in which you press a pedal to take cover, or the ones in which you dont reload by shooting outside the screen and you actually needed the second hand on each gun, I worked around this by upping the ante and doing "custom" reloads, since guns generally had a reload button on what would be the magazine of the pistol I just smacked the underside of the gun on my opposite wrist.

Now I want (to create) a game where every pistol you pick up gets into your hand. By the end of the game you would have a thousand pistols all around the screen. It would be funny when you pick up the third pistol and it shows up between the other two. It would be ridiculous when the 6th one shows up. But then you realize: this game has no weapon arsenal. Just more and more pistols. You don't get better weapons. You make more damage by the ability of constantly firing and firing more pistols at once.

True, but you had to pick up the weapons from an enemy that was already dual wielding them, picking up another single weapon just gave you ammo, you usually had to find another enemy already dual wielding before bond got the idea to do it himself.

What Halo 2 did was pretty big for duel wielding history. It separated the two hands completely. Reloading was individual, and you were not forced to duel wield identical weapons. You could mix and match the weapons, again, each hand was individually controlled. That was completely unique. In fact many modern games since still don't have that level of game play detail.

You can actually hit targets reliably while weilding a pistol in each hand so long as you pace your shots. I've seen trained gunslingers in competition pull it off just fine. Just a thought. Note also that with a breaktop revolvers you could conceivably reload one handed, so long as you have precise coordination and a decent holster. (Also seen in competition.)

I am glad I was not the only one to catch that. I'm just glad they knew there was something other than the SAA out there. The smith guns dominated the market for a bit due to the rolland white patent, and there were a plethora of other SA and DA revolvers out there, not to mention the fact that a fair amount of the "wild west" was just before the civil war and primarily fought with allen revolvers and other pepper boxes.

Just so you know, Halo 2 was 2 years late to getting duel wielding weapons into their FPS game. The Specialists came out in 2002 and was a multiplayer John Woo style game with almost every gun having a duel wielded counter-part.
@DeathBringer769
@DeathBringer769 6 жыл бұрын
Bungie did dual wielding first in Marathon (along with Rise of the Triad, which came out the same day, being the literal first games ever with dual wielding as we know it.) Halo 2 was like old masters just coming back years later to refine a gameplay concept they had already done. They had no need to rush to beat random PC mods since they already broke ground first back in the day. And yea, The Specialists was fun back in the day, but I really fail to see your point here...

Great video as always, but I'm quite horribly disappointed by the lack of N64's Goldeneye 007 in the list. That 1997 console classic introduced tons of shooter-related elements we take now for granted, like instakill / more deadly headshots, and yes - dualwielding. The double Klobbs are already a internet meme of its own, and with cheats you could literally dual-wield ANYTHING in the game - including rocket launchers and shotguns! The spiritual sequel, Perfect Dark, continued this same trend.

Mags should drop free with most pistols. If you have average to above average male hands, you should have enough to hold on to your pistol while drawing your fresh mag out of your magazine pouch with fingertips. Then to chamber the round, you can use the slide release or if you're using combat sights, rack the slide by catching the rear sight on your belt. As a leftie, I can confirm that the magazine release and slide release on non ambi pistols are still easy to manipulate with the left hand.

I noticed the TimeSplitters series is missing from this list... And a shame too. Arguably, that series of games contains the greatest amount of dual-wielding than any other. Akimbo weapons including (but not limited to) revolvers, sawn-off shotguns, P90 look-alikes, silenced pistols, mauser pistols, laser pistols, luger pistols, uzis, AK47s WITH grenade launchers attached, tommy guns, M16s AND miniguns. Any game that can beat that amount of dual-wieldage, I would truly love to see.

Goldeneye (and perfect dark) had dual weilding, usually of machine guns, but also of pistols, though the most prominent example actually involves using an assault rifle with a grenade launcher in the other hand. If you had that particular odd weapon dual weild mode enabled you could in fact combine two weapons almost arbitrarily. By no means the first, but for 1997, still an early fps example.

Back in the rail shooter arcade games, it was fun to spend an additional credits to wield multiple weapons at the same time. But I liked how RAW Thrills took advantage of this when they implemented "Justice Mode" in _Target: Terror_, allowing you to dual-wield guns while keeping score to one player. At least it beats crunching numbers and eating more coins than normally.
