I want to be the next British monarch as King Luke I. I am the rightful heir to the British throne, not Prince William since I am a direct descendant of King William II Rufus of England. I want to be the British monarch with the largest feet size. I want to be the British king with the longest hair well below my butt. Hey just wanted to say this series is really well done. I am very picky about royal history and especially with the brits it’s easy to mix things up. Your research is very good and so is the delivery. There are a few minor things that jump out at me editorially and yes sometimes the background music is a bit loud but I suspect you’re getting that mastered. For whatever one viewers opinion is worth you’re doing a great job.

I am new to this series, and very glad to have found your channel. I will say that Rufus was probably guilty of some of the things he was accused of, however he may have been vilified by those who were hungry to take power from him. No doubt he was as many rulers of that time were, a scoundrel. Great video sir, keep up the good work! On a side note, the forest seemed to be the ideal place to dispatch a king..

What is true Englishness? Why was Godwin any more English, given his lineage from Saxon invaders? What about the Roman occupiers before them- were they more English? Or the Celts before them? Are the remaining Celtic regions more English then England itself?
@Crusty_Camper Жыл бұрын
@@Tossphate That's a very good question ! I think it has as many answers as there are people. But in the period covered by the video the Normans were still very much the invading overlords speaking French. The name " English" comes from the Angles, one of the invaders/settlers from earlier times, so nobody from before their time could be considered English - it was irrelevant. Genetic studies have shown that many, if not most, of us have Celtic blood as well as Anglo Saxon. I would call myself "English" but I also have Scottish, Welsh, Irish, French and German DNA. That's typical English ( mongrel, some might say) I think.

I didn't know Robert of Normandy went on the 1st crusade!! But then I didn't know a lot of this, & it's great to see a vid about a massively overlooked English monarch- & it was a very considered take on William, assessing contemporary sources, & it covered a LOT in 13mins! I've always been unclear on him- was he actually that bad, or unfairly maligned?- & it seems like there's a case to be made for his defence, & calling him "average" instead, whereas I've seen people try to defend King John & been deeply unconvinced :D He & his brothers were very reminiscent of William & his brothers tho!

Tyrell killed him either purposefully or accidentally but he killed him, that's why he fled. Rufus doesn't have an effigy at Winchester but rests in the Anglo-Saxon mortuary chests. A forgotten, hated monarch. He was Norman so what do you expect.

I disagree that it was ever an issue of separation of church and state. While the church did want state to stay out of the church's business, it had no intention of ever staying out of state affairs. Excommunication of kings, the owning/running of brothels, decrees of countries open to attack-with the churches' blessings . . . no. Not really a separation at all. More of a ridged one way door, in favour of church over all others.

The only reason why William ll. is often portrayed as unpopular and mean is because he challenged the overbearing authority of the `Church and most chronicles of the age were written by churchmen. Had he lived longer he would possibly now be seen as one of the most important and influential monarchs of the Middle Ages.
