I agree that they definitely should’ve waited until later in the Whisperer war to have the Saviors become a threat again like they did in the comics. They could’ve made that arc a lot better in the show by having the Saviors be a wildcard factor in the “war” (which we never even got in the show smh). It would’ve been awesome to have the Saviors come in and save the communities from a Whisperer attack only to immediately turn on them right after. Pretty much how it went down in the comics but the show really could’ve taken this in an awesome direction by having two separate, unaffiliated, antagonists at the same time which the show or the comics never really did at full scale.
@LordKeram Жыл бұрын
About the Jesus topic. Yeah I think this is what really killed the show. The entire comics is about Rick and Carl. There are others who come and go and some that stay, but it's about these two. In the show. By season 9 both of them are gone. And not only that, but Maggie is also gone. Then they kill off Jesus. Then they introduce and kill of Henry and on and on we go. At some point it just felt like there are no more characters left. The only two surviving once were Daryl and Carol and they are both outsiders, so the transition of Daryl into some sort of a leader simply didn't pan out.

To be fair, Henry was introduced earlier as a kid, but I totally agree. He was given minimal screen time and then a bombardment and then killed off, idk if it was because I already knew he was gonna die but I had alot of trouble getting attached to Henry...he always seemed to do the opposite of what he was told. They tried to make him out to be a mini Carl, someone willing to sacrifice himself for what's right, but he didn't earn his love and development like Carl did...

I think if they were gonna do the 6 year time jump so that Judith and Henry can take on bigger roles in the show, they should've done it at the beginning of season 9. Get rid of the Savior revenge storyline, have the bridge already built and the communities thriving, and then have Rick be there when the Whisperers are introduced. The horde that Rick stops on the bridge could be led by the Whisperers (whether Rick and the group know it or not yet) and as much as Rick tried to lead them away, they kept going towards the bridge and because he kept getting hurt, he is not able to get to the bridge to blow it up before they do. So Rick decides to "sacrifice" himself by using the dynamic he was carrying or something. Then we can see the group grieve, turn to anger and revenge after knowing it was the Whisperers who were leading that horde and it goes from there. I think this would make a little more sense for the timeline's sake but I'm curious to know what others think about it and the season 9 time jump in general.

I dont care if the bridge was just there so rick could exit, the first handful of ep leading to ricks exit is such comfort for me. I also just think its truly the best way for him to go out, like making the ultimate sacrifice and its also poetic because in a way when rick "died" it basically began the downfall of the communities as this immediate post war period was in a way a golden era for the communities and by the time season 11 started the only community that was still holding on by a thread is alexandria and even then if the commonwealth didnt step in it would have been gone for good.

This is the beginning of, in my opinion, the show absolutely missing the point of Negan's character in TWD and completely mishandling his redemption arc. I still love JDM's portrayal, but the show's writers nearly butcher the character for me later on. In the comics, Negan is never really a "good guy" even during his redemption. It's more so that he makes a deal to help fight The Whisperers (after killing Alpha which, unlike the show, was his own plan) so he can be exiled instead of imprisoned, and both sides honor the deal. While he was imprisoned, Negan eventually realized that Rick's ways of doing things were right, and he's apologetic for the things he's done while also knowing he can never make up for it. Then, he basically lives the rest of his life (mostly) alone with the guilt of his actions weighing above him, and he's out of the story before the Commonwealth arc even begins... aside from a brief cameo in the final issue with no dialogue. In the show, seasons 9-11 dial back his violence and spontaneousness *a lot* which is jarring considering how much more intense they made him in Season 7 compared to this comic counterpart (Comic Negan is still violent and unpredictable even post-timeskip). It's almost like the writers realized he's a fan-favorite character, so they changed the later parts of the story to make him seem more like a misunderstood guy who was "good" the whole time deep down. Starting with Season 10 especially, the show tries to sweep all of the bad things he does under the rug while Negan constantly makes excuses for himself unlike the comic version. Then, Season 11 basically undermines the entire point of his comic storyline by giving him a "happy ending" in comparison. He doesn't even seem like the same character at all later in Season 11. Not to mention that the show's version of "Here's Negan" basically has him going 0 to 100 by snapping as soon as Lucille dies almost like he's Hank from Me, Myself, And Irene whereas the comic version shows that it was more of a slow transition that built up over time not only because of Lucille's death but because he began seeing people as weak after the other survivors around him died one after the other until he no longer bothered trying to care about people at all (it wasn't until Carl that he actually cared about someone else because, unlike most other people, Carl impressed him by being "strong" compared to everyone else). Also, here's a distinction that's massively important for his development - Comic Negan partially forever hates himself because he was too afraid/"weak" to kill zombified Lucille whereas Show Negan kills her by burning down his house and is basically just sad that she's dead now. I did enjoy the show's "Here's Negan" episode which still has lots of merits, but it's one of those things that fell apart the more I thought about it. It's all imo of course.

I think glenn might have the biggest impact as a father missing the life with his son in constrast for rick a father missing life with his son since they are the opposites as the father died (glenn) and the son who died (rick) just talking about why he needs to move forward. II think the moral compass could've given rick more wisdom than sasha thats just my opinion it creates the scene and makes that shot of rick on the bodies all that more impactful. Rick the man who hit the saviors first and in turn put glenn there that night would just make a lot more sense. ETA: I know many will disagree with me and I am totally okay with someone not liking my opinion. We’re all entitled to one and I respect yours even if it is different than my own. I mean no harm or ill will. No arguments or petty, just rambling from a fellow fan I have a largely unpopular opinion that I have come to gather after much time to digest in this space before the spin offs start airing. It is not set in stone, as I won’t know until everything comes out of course. Personally, and I know others will feel differently, I think the only way the spinoffs are going to end up performing any way commercially similar (or even fanfare) to TWD S1-S3 is if AMC really leans into funding and especially fresh writer’s room ideas. If they don’t expand on the virus or move towards mutations, it feels like beating a dead horse and Scott Pimple isn’t capable of Darabont level world building and it will be a huge problem now that HBO has blown post-apocalyptic zombie shows out of the water setting the bar high. AMC likely isn’t going to budge financially as always and the new shows will lack substance severely due to their ignorance to notice how high ratings for The Last of Us came out at a time where it has the potential to overshadow TWD completely. It’s so hard to go from watching TLOU to the most recent TWD seasons. The lack of funding and writing talent shows through a lot more than AMC is going to realize until it is too late. I don’t know why rich people enjoy ruining good things just to see their bank account not go down by one singular digit. Best thing they could do at this point is bring Darabont back in to help write a true ending and tie things together. And we all know that isn’t happening after the court battles and how dirty they did Darabont and brought their own cash cow down

Rick did search for his family. He got caught. He even had a sketch of michonne and Judith. The time skips were necessary for a soft restart due ricks exit. The savior arc needed some space behind it and they needed to do another soft refresh once rick left to establish a new era and new connections after his exit. Those are basic writing practices. It make sense to get his exist out before the ultimate new beginning. This creates new dynamics and allows people like Judith and Henry to take on larger roles.

17:07 I disagree. It's pretty well stabilished that: 1: Oceanside lacked the morals and motivation to do something like this because they thought Rick was in charge and would be pissed about this, they only changed their minds when Maggie defied Rick's vision and killed Gregory; 2: They only pulled that off without anyone suspecting because the Saviors were out in the open doing the construction of the bridge, if they're all in the sanctuary (like they were during the timeskip) then it wouldn't be possible to kidnap and kill them.

The biggest issue with TV shows is that there's "politics" involved. You have to please the show runners/the network/have quotas, you've signed actors up who may of been small at the time, but as time goes on they get popular and have offers that have them leaving the show for bigger roles.. And if you want to keep them you have to give them more screen time and adapt story and arcs to favor them. I find that voice actors for games/animation don't have this issue.. Hell Troy Baker/Matt Mercer still do lines for Guild Wars 2, an mmo that came out over a decade ago. They should cut out the filler and done 10 episodes per season. I was so hyped for season 3, which I loved for a few eps then ugh.. Then it actually got good again in season 4, and I was invested all the way till the amazing Negan Episode.. Then it lost its steam, it dragged on so much.. You can skip episodes and still know exactly what's happening in the story. When action/fighting/zombies become boring, you know you've over used it.
@pwpresents5660 Жыл бұрын
I personally loved Rick's "death" all the way until he got saved. If you wanted him in a spin-off, you should’ve left that helicopter scene out and put it at the beginning of the Spin-off. That way in the show he could still be officially dead and nobody would have meta questions. (Of course then there’s Michonne's exit which only compounded the mystery which we’ve yet to see through to completion.) I don’t like how open they left Ricks fate because we can’t be sure it’ll get resolved. They should’ve just followed through and killed him off if he was leaving for good.
@TheAwesomeAlan Жыл бұрын
You know what really makes me the most upset? That one of the best episodes of the entire show, What Comes After, has so much tension and stakes in it but all leads to Rick's departure. Why couldn't we have episodes as well-written and well-directed in literally any of Season 5-8 (7-8 more than 5-6, but still)? They could easily have made so many incredible choices, and should have brought in Angela Kang much earlier I think. Imagine if we had Kang going forward as of Season 6 - we may not have gotten a cliff hanger ending that season. Counter Season 6's finale to Season 9's penultimate episode. No cliffhanger, just drops you straight into the territory of the comic with a few show-specific twists that really come out of left field, in an AMAZING way. Also notice that it's the penultimate episode, not the finale. That's another thing, why leave amazing and tension-filled episodes for finale's and season openers? Throwing them into random episodes is what keeps audiences on their toes no matter where we are in a season. It reminds me of the penultimate episode of Season 2. Better Angels. Rick v. Shane. Such an amazing, classic episode - and it's not even the finale! I used to love the show, and still hold the early seasons and Season 9 to be some of the best that the show ever delivered, but there was just so much potential for the show to be one of the greatest of all time. I also think that, due to some of his earlier stuff being pretty great, Gimple was severely hindered by AMC the longer his run went on. That's not to say Gimple isn't to blame for some decisions, because I think he's gone on record that as he went on, he started writing more and more of what he wanted to write instead of trying to stick closer to the source material. Could be wrong on that, but I remember seeing that somewhere. Gimple, when his writing is narrowed through Kirkman's comic and the overall story that had been set up previously, is a good writer. But somewhere down the line, Gimple/AMC just started making bad decision after bad decision. I mean let's be honest, AMC's bad decision streak started with Season 2 in their decision to fire Darabont. Gimple also had a formula for his story telling, while it worked for 4-6, it got severely stale by 7-8.

Naw Maggies lil betrayal is what started the downfall of the communitys by hanging Greg and Oceanside pinning down the saviors which led to them leaving the bridge

I believe Rick's farewell episode is and should of been the Series Finale. And S9 Ep 6-S11 24 of been a new show. But, I agree, glad Rick's alive, but the show would've been better, and the actual series finale would've felt right if Rick died here as a hero.

Looking back on it now, that last scene with Jadis saving Rick in the CRM Chopper, imagine how Dope it would've been if they never showed that scene, but then, the final episode of season 12 they revealed it Right at the end of the Last episode, instead of the lousy back and forth with Rick & Michonne, and Then announced the Rick & Michonne show... So many missed opportunities.

I don't know if it was because I was into the comic first and expected a faithful adaptation but when Carl died, I stopped watching. I think the same goes for a lot of people but for me, the show passed away with him, regardless of how different his character was in the comics at that point

From what I’ve heard, Carl or Lori didn’t appear, because if they did, Rick would have allowed himself to die.

so the show tried to make negan more likeable by making rick incompetent in his leadership?

yes bc they knew he was going to be a main character with rick leaving. 😔

Scheduling issues or not, getting Glenn would have been massive compared to Sasha. I really wish they would have waited to get Steven Yuen back. I also think keeping Rick alive would just AMC being afraid to kill him off completely and lose every watcher of the show. I still dropped off after season 7 and entirely after Carl was killed off, but yeah.

I just wish in the dream sequence we got to see Steven Yeun. We wouldn't be here without Glenn

I caught up yay…dang… idk how I feel. I can at least make the joke that Rick just spawned his horse when they fell in the hole, it had to wait outside of it tho.

Since I had stopped watching TWD originally in Season 6, I was barely aware of Andrew Lincoln leaving the show (or Carl's death for that matter). While his last episode was unfolding, I didn't quite piece it together that this was Rick's end, until it became obvious. Lots of "How tf is he gonna survive this?" And then they airlift him out and I spend the next 2.5 long seasons wondering if he ever returns. Halfway expected him and several CRM (who I still know nothing about) gunships to Deus Ex Machina a Whisperer horde or something. Yes, that sounds like a terrible idea, but I was wondering wtf they were gonna do about Rick. Nothing, it turns out. Well, almost nothing, in TWD proper. The whole deal was very distracting - and a big reason why I'm here trying to find out all the things he continued to do in the comics.

Omg I cried when 1st watching Rick’s exit but in retrospect I hate it because as you said it was just a cheap ploy for spin-offs. Remember it was suppose to be a Rick Grimes movie trilogy they just played with us too much when it came to Rick

As a show only, I already knew that Rick was leaving in season 9 (because I used this series as a recap). I was under the impression that Rick would leave in episode 3, so I was pleasantly surprised when he just didn’t. Plus, I really liked the second timeskip. Overall, I really liked season 9. It was so refreshing after the dog$hit that was season 8.

The original narrator who says “Previously on AMCs The Walking Dead” unfortunately passed from a skydiving accident around July 2018 I believe. That’s why some of the characters say the phrase now before the start of the episodes season 9 onward
