I really love that Show Rick was completely broken by Negan. It was so interesting to watch him play. At Walker Stalker 2016 after the S7 premiere Andy even answers a question by a fan asking if Rick had any fight left in him and he says no. However watching it week to week and taking loss after loss was so demoralizing. And I can 100% get how casual viewers would lose interesting.

I think Negan saying "man sized nuts" is meant to be condescending towards Carl, who's basically an adult. Basically reminding carl that he's a kid and not the adult everyone else treats him as.

The bottle episodes really hurt this half of the season imo. After the opener I was really excited to see everything they teased that was upcoming and then it was just one location every episode, very slowly getting through the plot each week. I was very disappointed even though there were things I liked about each episode, so I can totally understand why a bunch of casual viewers would stop watching here. It's just a shame Seasons 7 and 8 didn't really hit the mark cos Season 9 is one of my favourite seasons and most casuals had left by then.

9-11 is hands down the worst part of the show.. It really pisses me off that peoplefans like you reacted like you did to the bottle episodes since the whole point was to make us stew in the pain of losing Abe and Glenn, but also to see where negan came from.. People where so quick to hate on what I mean was the shows best moment pulling no punches on the gore and emotional impact of the first negan encounter.. You should have been excited to see the world opening up and how negan affected the world not be mad that Rick didn't kill him right then and there

@@mullaoslo what the fuck? How are you assuming all of my opinions about the show based on my comment? Bottle episodes are a bad idea when you’re doing them all the time, period. They only did it because it was easier and cheaper and the first few they did (Clear) were popular, not because it’s a good idea. Seasons 9-11 is such a step up in quality over 6B-8 it’s ridiculous. When did I say I wanted Rick to kill him straight away? I’ve read the comics, I knew Negan was never gonna be killed off and that Negan’s rule over them would have been a plot for a little bit, it’s just the pacing that fucking sucked.

@@kermitthel-963 because 1-8 is walking dead.. Pull no punches, told the story of the comic.. Season 9-11has become a soap opera with no stakes what so ever.. All the mains are safe even though they out them in dangerous situations each episode only to have them saved last minute every time.. The only ones who die are red shirts and people who announced they would leave the show.. Insted of spending season 11 wrapping up a story we spent 12 years following, Lets spend time on a random new bad guy pope only to kill him off, oh and Darylls who gives a fuck girlfriend who came out of no where and is suddenly supposed to be a big bad i care about.. Actually why is there a big bad in season 11 at all when all that time could be spent saying goodbye to characters I actually liked.. Angela kang has taken all the fun out of the show to make sure everyone is happy and it makes the show boring.. Here is the message Korotos wrote: Fear The Walking Dead is literally the most wasted thing ever. First off- literally the first fan theories about the, “Fear,” part referring to these being a group of villains is about 10 times more interesting than anything we have seen so far. Secondly, why is it that we get a unique location, only for us to return to some random desert/forest or something like that 2 episodes later? Thirdly, they shouldn’t have skipped the start of the apocalypse as they did in the main sho. There was so much potential there and we barely got any more than we saw in the first season and through flashbacks. Fourth- they should have remained in L.A. we almost never see city environments in the main show- so once again, we had a unique location that was dropped almost right away. A survival series based around a city with such a large population would have been magnitudes more interesting than generic desert #55. And lastly, because no one is reading this, the soft reboot was the most backwards thing I have ever seen, and the fact Madison was literally brought back to life illustrates that well. Ok and lastly, lastly- they should have absolutely been villains. What’s the point in having 2 nearly identical shows following the good guys? And don’t even get me started on Morgan and Friends… Anyway, if you actually read this- leave a comment saying Muffins or something. Ok yeah, and season 3 of Fear The Walking Dead was great too. I just talking about the water vibe seasons 1 & 2 had and 3 didn’t. I typed this word for word and had to switch between KZbin and message (because I did this on my phone) which I scrolled through.

at least Fear progressed the story meaningfully in each episode. s1 is a little slow but it’s the closest we’ve seen to how the government and military would handle the outbreak. there isn’t much more to it than that. it would be “humane termination” pretty quickly. the yacht parts were just ok to me but there were always still interesting character developments. chris and travis for example. i do completely agree that season 4 was the biggest disgrace the franchise has ever seen. the worst season of either show. they made it similar to walking dead’s most boring episodes. moral compass themes shoved down our throats with one or two character centric episodes. fear used to be exciting and shocking, it picked up in 5b and season 6, but 7B was utter dribble. the finale with madison was really good in my opinion and i’m excited to keep watching, but even having madison gone for so long felt like an unearned return. her reaction to nick and alicia dying was the most close to home the show has felt in years

Watching back you can clearly see how bad the story pacing was. Even if you had the same exact episodes, but in different order it might have been fine. The oceanside storyline has to be one of the dumbest decisions as well. The actress playing Tara has never been particularly charismatic and Heat got booted from the show for behind the scenes reasons. They could have just skipped over the whole oceanside plot line and the show would probably be better for it. Personally don't hate the broken Rick tho. It shows you just how effective Negan is at what he does. Carl being treated like a 10 year old while being played by 17 year old Chandler Riggs is mega incongruent and this is where Chandler growing out of the role really hurts the story. Makes it all the worse that they decide to kill him off shortly before Rick, when Carl could have been the main protagonist in the later seasons.

Why season 7 has so many bottle episodes I’ll never know. I wouldn’t think it’d be because of character pay per episode as season 8 didn’t have this issue. It’s just really weird. I think this really hits on why season 7 was for a lot of people, including myself, the breaking point. It got way to dour for too long, and the over reliance on bottle episodes. Swear was when I called it quits, but not consciously. After Six seasons of watching it, I skipped next weeks episode and was like “i’ll catch the rerun the week after” and said that for like three weeks and was like “i’ll binge it leading up to season 8” and that never happened. I will say though, this series of yours really captures the feeling of watching the show week to week, and has me heavily considering going back and reading the comics and rewatching the show, to see it now with the hindsight if time. I did read well into Volume 25, so i’ll keep up with your series just to exactly what the show changed and didn’t. Good job with this retrospective.

I’m still shocked at how many people stopped watching Walking Dead around this time. This was as real as things could get when it comes to a powerful group that survives through anything, finally running into a group that would bring them all to their knees and make them question if they really can fight this outstanding enemy. It established Negan as a very strong and dangerous threat that could easily wipe our main group out, they really had to deal with a lot of suffering until they were finally able for a perfect opportunity to strike at Negan and take him down. Not every enemy can be defeated upfront in a straight up fight, a long game has to be played at times, and that’s what I think Season 7 & 8 did perfectly. The moment the Saviors were finally defeated, that victory felt very earned.

First I wanted to say that I love this series and as someone who’s read the books and watched the show, you’re probably one of the most knowledgeable people when it comes to my favorite story ever, The Walking Dead. These videos are amazing. However, I have to disagree about Eugene and the bullets. I think that it’s easy to talk the talk of making bullets to kill the bastards that just killed your friends with that anger fresh in your mind. But actually seeing the bullets you’re making and knowing they’re most likely going to be used to kill another human being might change your perspective on things. The comics often lack the moral center of the group that the adaptation seems to always have (Glenn, Gabriel, Morgan, and later Rick). I think these moments are nice and remind you that not everyone In the group is a killer and a warrior. I think it makes sense that Eugene is later hesitant about his role in the war.

I waited 7 months to say this even though I should've said it before. lol I've barely read the book version of TWD, mostly sticking with the show. I like to think that comic Rick wasn't "broken" and was immediately planning an attack after his meeting with Negan is because he didn't go through what TV Rick went through. After Abraham AND Glenn's deaths, Negan noticed that Rick wasn't *quite* broken and took him on a trip and then nearly forced him to cut his own son's arm off. And that's not to mention that Daryl is held prisoner. I like to think that the additional torture is what took Rick so long to want to retaliate in the show in comparison to the comics. In short: Comic Rick = Loses just Glenn TV Rick = Loses Abraham first, then Glenn, goes on a trip with Negan, is nearly forced to cut off Carl's arm, AND Daryl gets captured.

Honestly all we needed was like a couple scenes in episode 2 and 3 odd the group arriving at hilltop, then splitting from there to return to Alexandria. It's so dumb to have them trying to reach hilltop together but the next time we see the group, half are at Alexandria for Negan's arrival. I think meeting Ezekiel is a great palette cleanser for the tragedy of the season premiere. And the focus on Daryl as Negan's prisoner gives us an insight into his cult-like setup. Great focus episodes we just desperately needed one or two scenes showing the group at hilltop, then leaving hilltop to go back to Alexandria. Thanks AMC for being penny pinching shit Lords who didn't want to spend the money on paying their principal cast for two episodes.

The point about binging is so true the shitty breaks don’t effect you at all and the filler isn’t bad. Filler is only bad when you waited a whole ass week for a new episode
@bishbosh48152 жыл бұрын
People say season 7 and 8 are better on rewatching binging it, and while obviously it improves the pacing not having to wait week to week to watch each episode, that isn't the way it was designed to be watched or the way it aired! The damage is done for the people who watched those seasons when they aired and you really have to review TV as you watch it the first time. No doubt there are a lot of movies you've watched that were better the second time around because you have hindsight, but movies aren't made to be watched at a specific time each week. And when we were watching these seasons at the time of airing the pacing was brutal. But even if you waited til all the episodes were out and binged it you still can't escape the bad writing and poor structure of season 7. It's more tolerable because you get through the story faster and you don't have to wait a week between each episode, or months between part 1 and 2, but the gaping flaws are still there. It definitely is easier to watch that way but it doesn't make the season better. The bottle episodes and depressing tone really hurt the show and the viewers experience with it. Yes this is a zombie horror drama it's not exactly happy go lucky but the show had never spent this much time with the whole cast down in the dumps under a villains control with seemingly no plan or light at the end of the tunnel, and spending entire episodes in one new location with a handful of characters, did allow for deeper character centric episodes, but had a lot of boring filler and didn't really lead to much overall development, it was just a way of showing how Negan and the Saviors are affecting different characters in different locations. Compare this to a show like GOT that juggles many concurrent storylines, characters and locations, but you get multiple snippets of each one in every episode, there might be one or two episodes that go by without one in it, but you still catch up with the majority of the cast and the plot moves forward for all the chess pieces on the board. Season 7 wouldve been infinitely better if the story structure was more like that. But at the same time, I can't imagine cutting out 10 minutes from each community in each episode and putting them together into other episodes, because that would slow down the pacing of each individual storyline even more. It would require rethinking the plotlines and cutting a lot of filler scenes and conversations, and having more time pass between them. Afterall season 7 was like 2 weeks long, whereas in GOT weeks and months pass each season without explicitly saying so
@andyjackblacksmith60442 жыл бұрын
I agree with season 7, but 8 was a chore to get through. I did not like it, and I would take breaks from the binge. I do agree season 7 should of been structured better, because apart from the ocean side episode, the episodes themselves were okay to good. It mainly suffered from as you said the structure.

@@andyjackblacksmith6044 I don't particularly like either season, it didn't need to be 2 seasons. If it had just been 7A and 8B it wouldve been much better because everything in between is just filler

@@andyjackblacksmith6044 there's also a lot of bad writing, characters making uncharacteristic decisions to set up future events, you really feel the plot driving the characters instead of the opposite. And I get that the characters are depressed, strained and desperate, and that leads them to making more irrational reckless decisions, but they really come across as dumb when they used to be smart, purely because the writers want things to happen and can't think of a better way to make it happen more naturally. I dont understand why they didnt just use more of the comic material instead of doing lacklustre TV original things that stretch out the story arc to 2 seasons, 2.5 if you consider 6B which set up the Saviors and Negan's introduction

If I could fix this Season, it’d be to combined Seasons 7&8. Basically trim Season 7A down to be four episodes and having what was originally Episode 4 be the opening of the Season.

Oceanside could’ve been great. It actually wasn’t too bad in season 7. But the fact Oceanside was basically a waste of time in season 8. Here’s an idea of how Oceanside could’ve been made more impactful in season 8. After Natalia is killed by Enid, have episode 10 show Enid and Aaron being tortured for what they did. Cyndie, now being the de facto leader is unsure what to do. Enid escapes through an air duct due to her size, but after making some unnecessary loud noise breaking off the outside panel leading outside. She escapes, leaving Aaron alone. Aaron in episode 15 is about to be executed, but is spared in a similar way Randall in season 2 was spared. Aaron gets an idea and offers himself as a hostage. Cyndie and Rick and negotiate terms, whatever they want. Now in episode 16, Oceanside instead actually saves everyone inside hilltop from total destruction. Arat and 20 Saviors surround Hilltop and attack it with an armoured truck [wink wink]. Since Rick has all the heavy guns, the people inside only got shity bolt action rifles and a handful of pistols and shotguns with little ammo. The Saviors force the good guys into the house and prepare for a final assault when Oceanside attacks from the rear. The Saviors quickly surrender. After the war, Cyndie and Rick discuss terms. Cyndie wanting half of all the Saviors got, Negan’s head, and the execution of every male Savior aged 18yrs and above as poetic justice. Rick negotiates to an immediate 75% take with 50% for every 2 weeks the Saviors got to give to them for a period of 10 years. Although a deal has been struck, it’s clear this isn’t what Oceanside wanted. Making what happens in season 9 hits a lot harder.

I won't write a paragraph, but I will share my thoughts briefly on the topic: I think its unfair to say that Daryl is responsible for Glenn's death. Its not like he lashed out knowing that would happen, or wanting it too. Not to mention that Negan is an unpredictable man. Daryl might have done it thinking he would die.

I still feel very strongly that season seven and eight would’ve been a lot better and wouldn’t have dragged on as much if the prewar stuff in season seven was only four or five episodes and then the rest of the season was all out war and season eight was a new beginning I feel like a lot more people could’ve enjoyed it

I think the “Little Pig, Little Pig” line in the show is taken from “The Three Little Pigs” fairy tail. Which sets up Negan to be the Big Bad Wolf. The Shining copied it from the fairy tale, also. It’s possible Kirkman took it from the Shining, but the original source for the reference is the Three Little Pigs.
@Koroto6 ай бұрын
Yeah, I thought the actual three pigs story was super obvious, so I didn't even bother mentioning it and rather just referenced the Shining instead because of the... you know... psychotic undertones in Negan and Johnny. 😅

Love the videos, I’ve been binge watching them but one thing I did wanted to mention is (I’m really not trying to act all grown or whatever) I’m not sure how old you are, but I’m in my early 30s and Carl is definitely a kid in the show lol maybe it’s just that I’m getting older but even up to 17 or 18 id consider them a kid which is why Negan sees him as a kid.

I think season 7 is excellent if you're binging, but as someone who was still sad over the death of two central characters, the slow pacing just made me feel super antsy, let alone how depressing the whole season was. As a 15-year-old who was in love with Rick Grimes, seeing him so sad every episode was torture 🤣

Idk in regards to Carl I know he's significantly older on the show... but I never saw him as an adult he's always been a kid to me. I guess because I'm in education and I've met so many teenagers who *think* they are grown but have so much more to learn. I think I'm in the minority where I loved Carl in the show more.

None of those episodes are bottle episodes. Bottle episodes put very few characters into very limited and established pre-existing sets and deal with a singular issue, often purely for character depth. All the episodes you talk about here establish entirely new places, have multiple plotlines, introduce or advance the overall plot, change character dynamics, and set up future events. At best they're side-plots and you and a lot of TV viewers are annoyed by side-plots, though introducing the Kingdom, the inside of Sanctuary, Oceanside with its slightly expanded scope, and Maggie's leadership of Hilltop are all in service of the main plot of inevitably fighting the Saviours. Additionally, following the explosive brutal harrowing season opener up with Kingdom and Daryl and letting the audience stew in the anticipation of Rick's group's return to Alexandria is the perfect use of the weekly TV medium. Yea, general audiences disagreed, but they often do because general audiences prefer slop. The best shows make heavy use of setting up all the chess pieces one after another. I think it's the comics version that contains all the whiplash, by racing at breakneck speed through "Negan kills they return Rick is immediately planning to fight back Negan returns Carl hides in the truck this war will be over in 4 issues". Like damn, take a fucking breath at some point maybe?
@fontes92172 жыл бұрын
I know why the depressing tone made so many people quit the show, but to me it really works well, S7 is a season I enjoy quite a lot. I do 100% agree that the comic version of the Negan arc is waaaaay better than the tv show tho. My take on the whole "does Rick have a plan, is he really broken, etc" talk: I actually like the tv show version more. Episode 1 had the whole tv show original RV train ride scenes with Rick and Negan because Negan really wanted to see fear on Rick's eye, he wanted Rick to trully understand, to know he's not in charge anymore. So after Abe, Glenn and Carl almost losing an arm, we get that A+ scene with Andrew, with Rick desperatelly crying and all. To me, if he already had a plan to fight back on the next time we see him, it would feel a bit rushed, and that whole part of 7x01 would feel like it didn't matter at all.

I'm sorry if people aren't going to agree with me, but changing things and not following the comics was a nice thing for me. Me and my dad watch the show and binge it on repeat currently. We love it and don't have a problem with it. I get the point of this series is a retrospective and all but change and differences can be a good thing but I guess you'd have to of not read the comics and just watched the show to be like me. Love what you're doing on this series though Koro! 👏
