Henry's death always annoyed me. Carl suffering through the guilt of essentially being the reason 12 people died was always compelling to me, and I was hoping that this event could turn Henry into a more hardened, realistic character, not overtaken by naivety. But no, let's kill another one of Carol's kids I guess?

Exactly how I feel. That decision has always annoyed me because it just feels like they just did it for shock and to just recycle storylines for Carol. I honestly would've rather they killed Ezekiel and Rosita like they did in the comics because it would've been more heartbreaking for the fans; because I remember at the time a good portion of the fans couldn't stand Henry and weren't that upset to see him killed off but rather only felt sad for Carol.

@@dwightyboy5324 I don't think killing Ezekiel and Rosita would've been a good idea for the show, having just lost Rick, Maggie, Carl and Jesus, the show needed to keep around some core characters that have big screen presence. A lot of viewers would probably have been turned off which is an unfortunate factor of writing for television rather than a comic. Making Henry a significant character for this season and to then kill him off at the end gives that same feeling of killing off a really big character despite their significance to the story only being relatively new and their death affecting some of the actual big characters (Carol, Ezekiel, Lydia). Yeah it's repetitive but it did work and they didn't have many options.

@@dwightyboy5324 I still think Ezekiel and Rosita wouldn’t have been good choices, but I don’t disagree that the cast became bloated by the end. It’s not a problem for me as I’m pretty good at retaining a lot of information and detail like random characters for some reason, but it did get to the point where I’m having to remind my parents who some of the characters are when we watched it. Though I don’t feel like there are really too many characters that are superfluous, most of them served somewhat of a purpose however small like Nabila’s relationship to Jerry, and I wouldn’t have killed off someone like her just because there’s too many people to keep track of since there’s no real reason to, so it just gets a bit inaccessible unfortunately.

@@lucasdolding6924 no I get your saying and I'm the same way, I'm really good at keeping track of the characters, but I think more screentime should've been dedicated to more characters. Take characters like Alden, Magna, Luke, Kelly, and Lydia for example. Most of those characters barely did anything much during season 10. In season 11 Lydia barely did anything noteworthy. And part of the reason I say Ezekiel and Rosita should've died like their comic characters is because I think they would've been more heartbreaking and it would've made the pike scene more depressing and impactful. I think for a lot of people outside of Henry their deaths didnt really hit that hard and most people didn't seem to really miss them. I'm not saying that killing Rosita and Ezekiel wouldn't have had consequences but I think that if they wrote it right and later showcased other characters it possibly could've worked

I found the TV version of the border scene GUT-WRENCHING. I didn’t care for Henry much as a character, but Carol and Daryl in that scene do some of their best work in the series.

I remember the days leading up to issue 144's release. The teasers they put out with three panels from the next issue was reduced to one panel and a message talking about how there would be key moments and to not spoil it. Add in the cover of Rick looking distressed, the title being "..." and this issue being the last one in compendium 3, the anticipation was really something.

Connie's fight in episode 13 is insane considering she is deaf and they dont really emphasize the terror of silence till she gets locked in the house later on with Virgil.

Even though i already knew who would end up on the pikes before watching the episode i really liked how they let Alpha interact with Ezekiel. Must have given the comic fans a real scare.

My first reaction on seeing the border scene was thinking back to the originaly planned ending in the coming. I.e Ricks group arriving at Alexandria and then skipping to a statue of him surrounded by walkers. Its didnt really seems like an alternate ending anymore, but rather that the show was taking the long way there, as in litteraly showing the death of every character. At the point of the border scene only Carol, Darryl and Michone are left alive from seasons 1 - 3, yes Rick and Meggie comeback eventually, but they went missing for a long time. Using Tara (Season 4) and Ennid (Season 5) as redshirts to barely increase the killcount of a scene to estrange the earlier seasons of the walking dead with new ones was certainly an intressting whritting choice to witness.

I actually liked the highwaymen at least for filler. They gave some more screen time to Ezekiel which is really great but I think the most important thing was showing just how important something as simple as a movie could be. It really helped hammer home what Ezekiel was saying about the kids needing to see a movie for the first time and maybe the adults needed the reminder too

Border scene could’ve better imo. I hate how Angela rewrote the deaths because she didn’t want fans to know what to expect, then killed off Carl’s replacement and the hilltop’s last leader. Hilltop wasn’t nearly as important as it was in the comics

Very true about Carl vs Henry. I've never actually read the comics, but you spelled it out. Carl is a badass gigachad and Henry is a naive teenager thinking with his hormones. Yeah he was trying to save Lydia from an abusive mother, but he just goes in there stupidly thinking he can just spring Lydia outta there with no consequences, whereas Carl doesn't give a fuck and will take them on if he has to and he's capable of it. Henry, even show Carl for that matter, is never really shown to be as much of a capable survivor as Carl, or as jaded, complex and badass, he's just a dumb kid thinking with his penis, thinking he can be the hero and solve what is wrong in the world, and that either makes him endearing or a hormonal adolescent moron depending on how you feel about teenagers. And you're right, Judith is written like an adult in a child's body, similar to like Lilly in Modern Family 😂, which is cute and badass but unrealistic, where as Henry, like all teenagers in TWD, is written to be a total dumbass. And the worst thing is he doesn't even get to live to see the consequence of his actions. While it is more tragic that Henry's noble and virtuous goal results in his own death by the hands of the mother of the girl he loves, and several other characters whose lives are cut short just as they were finding themselves and building a life, it isn't quite as impactful as Carl having to live with himself after being responsible for the pike deaths and having that blood on his hands. It's more devastating for Carol losing ANOTHER child, but it just ends up making her reckless, careless and vengeful in season 10, rendering her brain dead and acting purely out of emotion, which makes her unbearable to watch and almost getting other characters killed in the process. Ugh... I do love season 9 and the Whisperer arc is one of the better ones. But compared to the comics, it really slips up in a lot of areas. But I also think Carl was already pretty unpopular, it he had lived and fulfilled his comic arc, and Rosita and Ezekiel had died as a result of his actions, people would've hated him even more. So it's had to say what would've been better

What I dislike about the building fight is, how incredibly stupid it is that Beta survived it. Daryl literally shot from the building and knew how Beta looks, there was absolutely no reason for him not to just give him a arrow to the forehead and end half this conflict before it even begins

@@Koroto ture, but I feel like people only really shit on the Saviour arc, completely forgetting that the Whisperer arc is arguably even worse. While with the saviours everyone is just completely overpowered with armies beyond reason, I feel lke they saw the criticism and just decided to go down to like two guns appearing in the entire season, both on the Whisperers side. In the comics it made sense that they wouldnt be to well armed, consedering the long peace, the limited bullets in the world and just how quickly the Whisperers go form no conflict to pikes. But in the show they literally had an entire subplot about Eugene building bullets last season and they knew Alpha was evil from the point Lydia was captured and told them, so there is no reason the Whisperers at the gate wherent just gunned down. And even if they didnt do that, the Whiperers could have easily all been sniped from a save distance every time they appear at the gates of a city, because they never change thier clothes which makes at least the ones they saw before easily trackable, plus Beta is like three times the size of a average walker making him an even easier target

Beta and alpha in the show were frickin superb and this coming from a guy who hated the whisperer arc in the and comics. Those two actors absolutely nailed it and dramatically improved an otherwise not good or at best average storyline.

They probably chose to kill Henry because he and Judith were going to be filling the same role as "Carl replacement" going forward. While narratively it would make more sense to keep Henry and kill Judith (not the mention her face being on a pike would be an absolute gut punch), I think TWD team in general probably thought that killing her off would cause a lot of problems and piss off the fanbase even more. Could have relegated Judith to NOT be a Carl replacement, but then what do you do with her that can both effect the main story but not completely throw it off the rails by creating new story threads that either change the entire outcome of an arc or end of meaning nothing in the end (although it's not like they cared much for that if this retrospective is anything to go off of, haha).

I started reading the comics after the Negan cliff hanger so I knew the whisperers were coming but I didn’t know who’d be on the wall. So I was scared to see king EZ & Rosita but glad they didn’t & henry & Tara was a shock cause as you said I thought he was the new Carl but it was way past Enid’s time without Carl she had no real place in the story

Carls comic book character was split between Judith and Henry, its slap in the face obvious lmao. and we see Michonne close Alexandria off to protect Judith. but due to the fact shes so distant in protecting her, we see it allows Judith to run off. Michonne is not paying attentions to Judith rather shes paying attentions to possible threats. idk to me this was unmissable details. and the highwaymen are simple, they 1 are canon fodder, and 2 they show that there are small groups that populate the world.

I feel like they went a bit too far with the border scene in the show. In the comic its mostly unimportiant sidecharacters, with Rosita and Ezekil being the only big charcters to die. The show had characters of a similar level in Enid and Henry, but on top of that it also has D.J., who depite not appearing too ofter is in the show since the saviour times, Tara who has been a big charcter since season 4 and Tammy had much more screentime in the show too. There was no real reason to go this far, just two big characters like in the comics with some random people for Hilltop/Alexandria would have hit just as hard without wasting so many characters

Terra was one of the last early show characters to still be arround, Henry was in the middle of becoming a huge character and the others where all way bigger side characters than the ones they chose in the books. We where already running low on older characters people actually care about, whith this scene they amplified that problem. And yes, killing Ezekil and Rosita would have been a huge mistake, they where way too importiant to just die like that

@kaiserfranzjoseph9311 *Tara and Ezekiel 😂. Well... I think it's just that Tara and Enid were always quite tumultuous characters and not very well liked among fans. A lot of people's reactions to Tara and Enid's deaths was indifference or "good riddence", because of how they were written to be so unlikeable in previous seasons. They had their fans, but most people were meh about them. It wasn't as impactful if Rosita or Ezekiel had died as they were much more popular, even though Rosita was ruined in season 7 too. I think the bad writing of season 7 and 8 really left a scar on viewers, but for me, while I was never a big fan of Tara, Enid and Henry, they were written much better in season 9 and were really coming into their own and had hopes for the future, so while I wasn't really sad that they died because I really liked them, it was more just tragic that they were just getting their lives together and had them cut so short because Alpha is just so evil and toxic

@kaiserfranzjoseph9311 but I think this is the "problem" with later seasons of TWD. Death and unpredictability was a fundamental part of the early seasons of TWD, it felt like anyone could die at any time and no one was safe. Characters would die unexpectedly in random episodes, and characters that felt like they would play a bigger role were cut short, but it made sense for the story and narrative and it was built up to. But every deaths became too random and unpredictable. Characters would only die in finales and premieres and it would be simply to trim the fat or add shock value, not because it served a greater purpose in the story, unless it was the death of innocence and naiivity. But I think after the killed Glenn and Abraham, as much as it made sense for the story, it left such a gaping hole because those characters were so popular that it just couldn't be filled, and then they killed Sasha, then Carl, then Rick left, then Jesus died... I think it all got too much, and it felt like every good character was dying. I think they got afraid to kill off anyone else for fear of the backlash and losing even my viewers as viewership was plummeting. So after the pikes, which was the last real big moment in the show, despite it continuing for 3 more years, they just clung onto the remaining cast for dear life and they were afraid to kill off anyone else that's even remotely popular, even when it wouldve made sense and wouldve added to the gravitas and emotional impact of a storyline. Literally the only notable characters that died in the 46 episodes that followed were Siddiq, Alden, Luke and Rosita, who were glorified side characters. And especially with the spinoff announcements that gave Daryl, Carol, Maggie and Negan impenetrable plot armour, all stakes were removed, which made the story extremely boring despite all the action. A long rant but, it needs to be said 😂

Ehhh, that's sort of the thing - the comic cast was also magnitudes smaller than the TV one. I think the show already had (and will continue to have) a problem of expanding on new character stories (characters like Gabe, for example. He exists in the book, but he hasn't appeared for like 30 issues. Ditto for Sidiq and many many others. Also the big characters like Tara were also already mega sidelined, so I wouldn't even call them major anymore) to the point that there's very little room for the bigger story to actually move forward and instead of trying to narrow in on it, they inevitably just return to the core cast and everyone else is forgotten. On top of that, I think AMC was married to Daryl and Carol at this point, so everyone else was a bit of a take it or leave it deal 😂 If anything, more of the "major" characters should've probably ended up on the pikes, but at the same time, I think it already hit the point of diminishing returns in terms of shock. Plenty more about this in seasons 10 & 11 though - the sheer number of characters there is a mess. 😬

Yeah that height thing about Negan was stupid it's like some people acted like he was 5 foot 10 no Negan in the comics is 6 foot 4 and Jeffree Dean Morgan is 6 foot 1 it's really not that big of a deal at least they got someone tall to play Negan and no one could play off the charisma of Negan like Jeffree Dean Morgan either so people shouldn't have gotten upset about it

I only read the first 50 editions of the comics as I was literally 7 when they started releasing...my dad let me read the prison arc when I was 9 I don't know why lmao...BUT basically I went into this with little to no idea of what would happen, and I genuinely remember the border scene being jaw dropping. I don't cry at shows very often but thinking about Carol losing her 4th child and seeing Daryl try to protect her from the reality of the situation was insane! I agree that the 1,8,16 formula was getting old, which made the border scene even more unexpected for me. I do like that they didn't make us wait til the next season to see some of the aftermath, and seeing Carol/Ezekial's relationship + the kingdom fall apart was absolutely heart wrenching for me as I always really enjoyed their dynamic. I never comment on videos but the border scene in particular was mentioned here and I loved it so much I felt like I needed to comment lol. Thank you for the fantastic videos, you help keep my TWD fixation going even when I'm not actively re-watching the show for the 3rd time lol. Great work Koroto :] !!

Don't get me wrong, I'm glad you had a good experience with the border scene, but to me personally I thought it was probably the worst moment in the show. Henry dying is a W becuase he's unberable in the show to me, Edith pretty much fell into obscurity, and Tara was the only important death there. Everyone else was barely considered a character. It'd be more forgivable if there was any semblence of explaination as to how Alpha even got all of them from the fair and whatnot, but it just happens with zero mention as to how. I guess Alpha is just fucking cranked or something

Watching the border scene without knowing a single thing about it before left me honestly stunned. 9X15 was something I had never even thought of them doing and everyone always just trashed the show and says it got bad after Negan but the whisperer arc and this dagger is the most impactful thing I’ve seen watching the whole show

I have to say, Season 9 Episode 15 "The Calm Before" is by far, my favourite episode of the TV series, along with S9 being my favourite season, watching it for the first was such a HOLY SHIT moment for me (especially since TWD wasn't as popular anymore so I never got spoiled for anything). The Border scene in it of it's self was so tragic, the juxtaposition of it all was so... heartbreaking, especially since this was the penultimate episode and not the finale, sine by this time the finale format had become of the show for. I could honestly go fully in depth in the entire episode as a whole, like how the opening scene perfectly set the tone. A couple, making their way in the apocalypse, thriving, surviving, their happy, and the happiness is now snuffed out with a eerie tension as Alpha kills them and proceeds to skin the woman's hair. Anyways this episode was fantastic 9.9 for me, the only nitpick I have is the Pike choices, I feel like some Highwaymen could've been spared and more Oceanside members would take their place, so the Highway men could in time in S10, come into their own as individual characters, but that's really my only nitpick the rest is just great.

The last four episodes of s9 is my favorite part of the season. Scars is in my top 20 episodes, and The calm before my third favorite episode. While I knew the pikes were coming, on first watch all the build up to that moment almost made me sick. I agree that it would had been so good to have more snow throught the show
