I agree with you on this: If it makes more sense or fits the story better, absolutely sacrifice those characters instead of hiding them in a locker somewhere for a potential spin-off or whatever. Kirkman understood this and it's one of the biggest reasons he's such a brilliant writer.
@bishbosh4815

Killing off characters in TWD is a catch 22, coz I one hand it's kinda the point of the show and the post apocalyptic world it's set in that anyone can die and it's... maybe not survival of the fittest, but it is about survival, and even when they establish a community they are never safe, and the fact that anyone could die at any time kept things unpredictable and meant we could never allow ourselves to get too attached. But in the early seasons, deaths were worked well into the story and it made sense either narratively or thematically and how it affected the characters around them. But around season 5-6 characters just started dying randomly for shock value and to trim the fat, and even with purposeful deaths (whether we like it or not) like Glenn and Carl, by season 9 too many characters were dying and too many beloved characters we knew were gone. And then Rick left too, and Michonne in season 10, and Maggie left too but returned, a several other characters died... although it made senses for more notable characters to die in the Whisperer war to make it more impactful, I think the writers got scared that there would be too much backlash if they killed off more characters

Killing them off for the sake of killing them doesn’t do the story or the characters any service. If you dictate episodes quality by how many deaths you aren’t in it for the story
@Logan912

@@vincenta8652Characters shouldn’t be killed off for the sake of being killed off, no (just look at Nick in Fear The Walking Dead), and it should serve a purpose in the story, but it can also go too far in the other direction where main characters are basically super heroes with so much plot armor that there are no stakes too.

I do actually like how characters don't use firearms after the timeskip. Yeah logically it doesn't make sense considering Eugene had the means to manufacture bullets, but people had already been pissy about them still driving cars. I think that going for a pre industrial vibe where characters are riding horses and using swords and bows and arrows was refreshing and matched the vibe and tone

Honestly, Beta going full Michael Myers as the residents of Alexandria slept is the most "walking dead" feeling thing the show had done in a while to me. Seeing a character like laura get bopped with no warning felt like old school TWD to me (Ya know where they kill side characters before they reach a modicum of their potential?)

Also the idea that a simple mass murder can result in a full blown walker attack is something that I personally felt was a nice touch I’d like to see something like that in more zombie apocalypse stories honestly

Hey, I'm back again to tell you this series is incredible, but I'm also back to criticize some of the stuff you said, specifically the dislike for "we're the ones that live". I don't get it. Andrea says "don't for get Rick, we don't die. We. Don't. Die." All the way back in the saviors arc. Basically, they keep this catchphrase until the very end of this comic, so I don't quite agree that the comics/TWD don't have catchphrases, it very much does. I actually adore the title of the spinoff, because to me, it actually encourages the idea that Rick/Michonne may be killed off, because of how similar it is to the comics quote. Still loved this video tho! Can't wait for the next one, and your opinions on TWD universe!

Yeah, Andrea even references that quote on her deathbed. And yes, both Rick and Andrea die, but they do so like dozens of issues after this catchphrase is established as a thing.

This is the issue I had with season 10, it felt more like a series of things happening and characters making dumb decisions whether than I well planned out and organised conflict. Like, for all season 8's faults, at least the militia had a plan for attacking the Saviors compounds and trapping the leaders in the Sanctuary. While I initially liked the cold war element to this season with the protagonists trying not to start a war and the mental toll the tension and paranoia created, and we did get that opening scene of them training to fight, I wouldve liked to see more of their strategy. Like how everyone just went to Hilltop from Alexandria like they knew a battle was coming, or how they practically skipped an episode and everyone regrouped at "The Tower" instead of Alexandria, which was smart, but also came out of nowhere as it had never been mentioned. They just abandoned their communities, and it wouldve been so much cooler to see a big Whisperer battle in Alexandria like in the comics, like No Way Out on acid 😂

Love how much work you put in these videos, really enjoy your pov since I always thought the comics vibe sticks so much to what they were trying to tell in previous seasons but then all this Angela Kang new direction just ruin it exchanging it for empty entertainment, where you just get a little bit of nostalgia for what it used to be like.

The Whisperers and their horde are kind of like the rumbling but about 10,000x less devastating. There are a lot of weird parallels between TWD and AOT. Some are very surface level like the idea of a big mindless horde being used to sweep over and destroy one’s enemies but there are some deeper connections I think. I’d love to see you talk about that! For example: I saw AOT years after TWD and the Saviors Arc pretty quickly came into my head when I thought about the first part of Season 4 where Paradis attacks Liberio. They were kind of backed into a corner and while still being the “good guys” (though I agree with Armin and think that good and bad aren’t the best labels) they did something horrible (kill innocent people who had families etc.) and all it did was escalate the violence and continue the awful cycle until one side ultimately gains the power to annihilate their enemies. Also Armin and Glen both being appalled by the world they live in and what it has made them become is a really clear and cool parallel. Even Eren and Rick have *some* similarities. They are both good meaning people who just want to protect those they love but they have to basically become a monster (Devil/“We are the walking dead”) to protect their people. The biggest difference to me is that Rick’s journey ends with his mercy prevailing over his wrath and him being peaceful and rebuilding for a future full of hope and Eren’s story…… doesn’t seem headed in that direction (I’m also an Anime only so dw no spoilers). Even if the Eldians are saved, I don’t think there’s coming back from this for Eren.

I feel like they were building Jessie to be like Andrea is in the comics but then they made the stupid mistake of killing her off, she had so much potential, was extremely likeable and was a better love interest for Rick, feels like she would’ve been there for him more emotionally during the Saviours arc, giving him more hope

Personally, I felt s11 being more soft in terms of the tone, especially the commonwealth storyline, I didn't mind the over the top beta but the thing of killing their people gets repetitive, and we get it even in s11 with Pope and also in Dead City, in that regard the Governor was a lot better, he only killed his people in important moments, like milton and after the fail attack at the prison

Been binging through these retrospectives in the past few days. Thank you! Been a fan of the comics since before the show even came out and this retrospective has been reminding me of why i loved this story so much. At the same time, it has also made me accept the tv show a bit better. I started losing interest right at Season 2 when they stretched the farm arc into 13 episodes, later droped it after Season 4 and some years later binged Seasons 5-8, then kept on watching till the end. The tv show did indeed improve a lot of stuff and when i think about Shane, i think about Jon Bernthal's portrayal. I think what felt most different to me was the pacing. I stopped reading the comics around 2010 because i couldn't buy more volumes at the time but when i reread it in 2017 and kept on reading till the end, i just couldn't put it down. The comic always made you want to know what was going to happen next. On the other hand, i feel like the show's pacing was only realy like that in the 1st season. I feel like most episodes after just drag and drag. And with all the main cast leaving, the final season just felt unrecognizable to me. The comic book has a realy powerful ending, while the show just ends up as a set-up for spin-offs. The 2010s were an interesting time for genre TV. Both Game of Thrones and Walking Dead's ratings just kept rising and rising with each season. But then, people just stopped talking about TWD. I feel that had they not abused the bottle episodes and not milked the franchise so much, the tv show would be more welcoming to revisit. AMC's Breaking Bad is still watched a lot for a reason, and while i can't point to the tv show as being on that level, i do think the comic book is.

Carol's S10 arc could be so much better by just changing the cave episode. They were already looking for the horde, so maybe they just stumble on the cave on their own and a couple whisperers block it off. Would make a lot more sense. You could still have the claustrophobia angle in there, and this be the cause of Magna and Connie's disappearance

I do think you’re 109% right, things can be dumb but also work in other ways to make it good but not as good as it could be. The later seasons of the walking dead (9 onward) feel like that to me. I do think the show having Negan be put up to Lilli mg Alpha by Carol is still good because ultimately he could have still said no. I feel like it makes sense for his character to 1. Be self serving and try to get freedom (even if it’s a pipe dream) and/or 2. Genuinely want to help and atone for his past. I think both are probably true and I think that the idea of Negan kind of losing his cutthroat savvy edge after being locked up and reflecting for so long is a very reasonable and pretty interesting thing to see.

I totally agreee that michonne leaving her kids for what seems like a wild goose chase is extremely out of character. But I think the easy remedy for this would have been to make the evidence of rick being alive more convincing. Yes she found the phone, but all that really should insinuate is that he WAS alive. Beyond that there is 0 leads as to where he went, which makes her leaving completely ridiculous. I wish instead she found a note directly from Rick that basically says “this is a long shot, might take years for one of you to find this, but this is Rick grimes, I’ve been captured by the CRM and am being held in Philadelphia” (obviously it could be written better than what I whipped up in 30 seconds) that way she has a clear goal in mind and her leaving her kids actually makes SOME sense

I think you're taking the saying "We Are the Ones Who Live" a little bit too literal! I understand it as despite how many challenges they face and how many people might die, they are ultimately the ones who will live on in the hearts and memories of others, through the care they had for eachother and the relationship they built as well as the effort they put into building a better world and taking care of the people they care about! I don't see how that doesn't fit into the world of the Walking Dead stylistically! Sure the Walking Dead is very brutal and gritty but that doesn't mean it's a world without hope! I think you might be taking the edgy nihilistic point of view a little too much! Living in the world of TWD, Still Gotta Mean Something!

I get that people are people and stuff happens... but I would much rather have a story close if not 1 to 1 as much as possible with the comics in the back half rather then 900 half-assed spinoffs. Imagine instead of Rick killing Dwight for peace and dying we had Rick having to kill Daryl for peace and then dying. That would've been one of the biggest moments in television history. Let alone Carl having to put down walker Rick in live action. I would do anything to go back in time to make these happen some how and I would've been actually happy, rather then annoyed that were getting a Rick show.... which was supposed to be what the walking dead is....the story of Rick grimes.

Beta is such a corny character bro. Even for the comics. But especially in the show. Nothing was scary about him. His danger comes from the fact that nobody decides to ever SHOOT him. There were multiple times where they could’ve killed him and chose not to.

Oh god that new game… I saw that the other day and read what it was about and said “That sounds so cool!” Then I saw the trailer and realized we can’t have nice things.

I’m sorry but Michonne and Rick is one of the most forced romances I’ve seen in television. I wish they kept Jesse alive in season 6 and made her into the TV version of comic Andrea. That would’ve been way better than to force a romance on us.
