As a 1st generation Aussie of Indian parents, I grew up listening to these songs from the 60s and 70s. This is an all time favourite. I didn’t even know this song was controversial because she loves her husband with such purity and devotion. I have always found this song to be deeply moving and still gives me goosebumps. To love anyone with such a pure heart and devotion is to experience God, because ultimately God is love. Excellent review as always. Nutan the leading lady was known for her acting and you noticed the power of her acting abilities in the subtle way she manages to express it alongside Sunil Dutt who was equally an amazing actor 💖

Just stumbled upon this video on KZbin. Such love and devotion towards their husbands is still very common across Hindu women even in 2022. It is neither a rarity nor something special. Nor it is imposed on the wives, it's very organic and natural. What is shown in the song will not seem at dramatised if you've ever been in a traditional Hindu family in pre-internet era. I've seen such devotion in my grand mother for my grandfather and in my mother for my father.... every single time. It was heavenly feeling to even see and experience so much of love ❤️

Love your reaction as always! And I wholeheartedly agree with your review of this song. I think whoever has criticised the lyrics of this song has completely taken it out of context, and it's lazy criticism in my view, because this person is overlooking so many aspects of the relationship that is shared between these two people - Nutan and Sunil Dutt. There is a gentleness between these characters, and a deep understanding of each other, and also an acceptance of one another. She loves him unconditionally, and sometimes you need to let somebody know what they mean to you, and this is being conveyed poetically through this song. If her husband was abusive, derogatory or dismissive toward her and she felt this devotion for him, then that would be deeply problematic indeed. But that is not the case here. I've always loved this song, and I will always love this song! Oh and btw... Sunil Dutt is Sanjay Dutt's father and Nutan is Kajol's auntie. Thank you for your lovely and on-point reaction! 😍

If anyone watches this full movie then will understand why she is saying all these words to him.... He is shown as a handicap person with step mom who every time criticise him.... He lost all his confidence on himself and thinks no girl will like him.... But fate brings luck and a girl became his friend and then circumstances make her marry him..... She was determined to evolve self confidence in him.... So she is saying that you are no less than God to me.... I love you so much that wherever I see I see you only.... I may have forget some story line because I have seen this movie many years ago....May be he had step mother or his uncle family I don't remember correctly

Hi, exactly, it is love and appreciation of her husband. Watch the movie, two of the finest actors. She is trying to explain her feelings to her husband how she feels about him. the strongest, most powerful feelings of vulnerability and love. He doesnt understand her devotion because of his own sense of disability

It is seems like the woman is overworshipping her husband, but to me it's a form of loyalty and unconditional love because she's not leaving her partner when her partner is in the non ideal condition. It's a story of something rare these days, where many people seeks perfections on other people without thinking that anything can happen anytime, including the sudden event that cause a physical impairment 🙂

Let people think this to be overworship . They have never really loved. You merge your sense of identity with the beloved . That is why there are people who kill themselves or go insane when they lose their beloved . Though this self sacrifice need not be seen always in romantic love. Our parents do a lot for us , at the cost of their own happiness. In this world of instant gratification most of us will not understand it till we have children.

Spot on with your commentary! I agree that the lyrics, by themselves, show a self-effacement that is uncomfortable. And the fact that it came at a time when women were beginning to assert their independence and enjoy greater freedoms kinda stinks. But taken in the context of tenderness and affection as an expression of comfort and support for, and most importantly recognition of, another in their moment of doubt and self-pity, this is not subservience, it's strength. You describe it as almost maternal, and it reminds me, as a mother, of my own struggles with supporting medical needs in my family. It absolutely requires a degree of self-effacement, which is hard to understand or achieve in this age of instant and constant gratification. To see the suffering of another, and the necessity of hiding one's own fragilities at times: it's rather ironic, how Indians blithely walk past abject poverty, misery and exploitation on the streets of India, and how this is made much worse by disabilities, but be uncomfortable with seeing non-abled persons up close and personal, or on the screen. You can see here that wealth is no protection from body fascism or prejudice towards otherness of any kind. A lot of people make a fuss over the wife touching her husband's feet, the preservation of culture and all that tosh, but I would like to draw attention to one layer of that performance. Initially, the husband himself seems uncomfortable with his wife's affection, and walks away in apparent shame, with his wife following him, reassuring him. But as he grows in confidence, there is a moment when she walks away from him, and he follows her, smiling. Take from that what you will.

It is just that the times are constantly changing. 50 years back, because of patriarchy, the women were trained to treat their husbands as gods, Now in the era of full individual expression, values are different. Who knows, in the coming era of shortages, difficulties, calamities and catastrophes, the values of universal love and cooperation will take precedence over individual love.

Where is the controversy??? Its quite normal in Hindu tradition to respect and even worship husband ...cultured women still touch their husbands feet to receive blessings .... there are various kinds of worship in the Hindu religion one of the ways and means to achieve God for women is to achieve through the worship of her husband .... Sach women who worship their husband and who are devotee to their husband are called " Sati " it is said that Satis acquire a lot of power by the purity of their mind and their devotion only to their husband.... it is said that no arm can come to the husband of a Sati as long as she is alive..... That besides in the Hindu tradition married women observe a lot of religious fastings to ensure health and success and long life for their husbands.... Also in India being a married woman is a matter of pride because the married woman gets to apply red vermilion on their head and also get to wear colourful bangles and other ornaments which makes the woman complete .... so among the various ornaments of the women are husband is also considered to be an ornament.

In india in older days it was taught tat ur loyal to just 1 person n love him so much tat u see god in him, husbands are not god true n no one is...but understand indian culture not like tday have sex with many people n love many ....it was like just love one person in tough times too...dont leave him just because he is useless...modernization doesnt mean dont love ur husband...love after certain time becomes divine...for anyone...so pls try n understand indian culture...n wen u dont do tat wat is happening in tdays world we all know. It is said tat if u cant love one person truly then wat is the guarantee tat u will love other woman or man truly?? Another woman or man in anyones life just causes destruction nothing else.itihaas gawah hain dost..so indian culture is very rich n full of good things..the only thing which i was against was sati pratah child marriage n bali pratah...rest indian culture is too good n rich.
