we have water separators on the bottom of our fuel filters. just drain it through the drain plug. Is the cold making the water in the fuel worse? or are the facilitews the use sub par and fuel bunkers full of water
@jermainerace4156 Жыл бұрын
Condensation inside the fuel tanks. No way around it: can't seal the tanks or air can't get in to replace the fuel as it's burned. IF you let air in, water comes with it. Marine diesels of this size send a lot of fuel back to the tank, so the water and fuel become quite well mixed, and the gravity type separator you mention wouldn't cut it.

The most important thing you can do for your car, boat is keep a detailed log of parts changed with receipts. And speak to service staff at dealership about common failures at what miles or hours, etc. They will tell you what to expect. Increase your oil thickness as you go. 5w-20 to 5w30. Add Lucas oil stabilizer as needed. And when you go to sell your detailed log book can even increase the value of your car by thousands, or boat by hundreds of thousands. And it will be more reliable in the mean time. As I have gotten older I have come to highly value people who can fix things, craftsmanship, etc. If this was my boat I would have more spare parts that you can imagine. I will get all that money back when selling as they realize I maintained the boat well.. You can even include pictures of maintenence log when selling. Sell faster and for more money. I just told you how to increase the value of your boat and cars by thousands. Your welcome.

Why do u have water in your fuel to begin with? Do they no have drains on the bottom of their tanks? Or a fuel train that way the cab just drain the water? Plus fuel filters?
@MrDbradie Жыл бұрын
It happens with diesel all the time it’s part of the deal with constant temperature changes
@timothykappel198 Жыл бұрын
@@MrDbradie I know your tanks sweat but u normally have drains at the bottom of your tanks. Plus u normally have a fuel trap that's made to catch water all your fuel tanks and all your fuel lines are connected to the fuel trap so any water or trash settles in your trap. And u shouldn't have that much water in those tanks. It doesn't suck the fuel off the very bottom either. They ought to have some racor filters/water separators on there too. That way u can see any water and drain it out the bottom of the canister without even shutting the engine down. I know the boat is rocking and rolling out there but u drain everything before u leave the dock and u can always drain your fuel trap on the go.
@ermining1 Жыл бұрын
@@timothykappel198 marine engineer here. On the fuel circuit (pretty much the same on all ships) we have a few things in place to remove water and impurities. In a nutshell At the start is the decantation tank, heating elements, pumps seperators and then filters, to then go back through another filter to the fuel tank (after that more filters). Seperators are the same thing as milk seperators, except there are more plates on the ones at sea, but they work the same way. There can be multiple reasons why there is water, one of them is because a ship uses HFO which is the closest thing to crude oil you can find. The other reason is that marine diesel is not a pure and that it's left sitting in tanks in a very damp area. The issue their having is pretty common, seperators break down all the time, what I'm more surprised about is that supposedly they can't fix it, or have spare parts. I started working at sea as an apprentice at 14(in Brittany on fishing boats) as a trainee deckhand and mechanic, working on the seperators is one of the first things I ever did and learning basics about how to fix them etc as they are essential. The other thing is ive never worked on a ship that doesn't have 2 seperators. to me this seems like drama.

I'm no pro, but what it seems is that the device that is busted is a sort of centrifuge. I'm assuming it spins up, separating water, and potentially other contaminants, out of the fuel (water/contaminants entering the fuel for various reasons before, during, and after getting to the boat). That way the boat is just burning pure fuel, and not fuel with stuff that can cause damage, and eventually breakdowns in the engines/generators/etc. They can't wait around to fix, and/or have it fixed, so they decide to basically skip the broken machine, and let the fuel filter mechanism do the brunt of the work. This works fine, in theory, as that is what the fuel filter does anyway. However, without the centrifuge to doing its job, the fuel filters are going to become clogged up exceptionally fast; in this case, a brand new filter, at least the way they were talking in the video clip, would seem to only last a few hours before it becomes 100% clogged up, unusable, and needs to be replaced. So that is why Jake has them buy as many as they can find; they will go fishing with a broken centrifuge, and every few hours, check on the engine, checking out the fuel filters, and replacing the as needed, again and again, until they are done fishing, can get back to port, and fix the Saga properly. It's a band-aid on a bullet wound kind of solution, but after having spent nearly two weeks in port waiting around, Jake made the hard call for the sake of the season.

You have no idea what you’re talking about. There’s so much more to it. Banks and investors own those boats, they’re bound to quota obligations to processors, (which they lose if they don’t meet quota), and the overall costs are enormous. Not to mention, what about his crew who have all but given their lives to his boat? They are relying on every trip. Your mindset suggests you’ve never born any responsibility. It never ceases to amaze me when people comment on things they know absolutely nothing about with an air of authority. I’m going to go out on a limb and say you were born around the year 2000.

Sure he could've went to school got a business degree that 1 million people have and tried to work his way up the ladder at a bank or something. But A the money isnt even close B different people are built for different things. You can never have it all. You want a family okay you want big money okay there are sacrifices involved in all of that. Grow up
