There is a lot more to being a good Captain than just being on the helm yelling, cursing at the crew and behaving like a toddler. Also Jake's uncle is a long time deckhand on Sig's boat, so it's a bit of who you know, who you're related to, not necessarily how good you were to begin with. Jake had some help.

I believe it's part of the agreement between the deckhands and the captain. The captain is legally obligated to get his deckhands to the harbor where they were hired with all of their gear. Like a captain can't just fire a person in the middle of the ocean and say get in a lifeboat.
