Nadeshot is the GOAT. It's been a rough few years for e-sports and for 100T, and you can see how much of a toll it's taken, but few people (and orgs) could have still been standing at the end of it. He hired and brought in an outstanding set of people to work with him on 100T, and it will be great to see what it grows and changes into.
@mrbp33514 ай бұрын
Just curious as to how its been a "rough few years for esports" when esports has been skyrocketing the past few years lol.
@wookiechew234 ай бұрын
@@mrbp3351 Given how many e-sports organizations have folded, had to scale back or restructure, and the decrease in the amount of outside investment these ventures receive now compared to when 100T raised that initial $100M, you’re just entirely wrong. Don’t take my word for it - they mention it multiple times throughout the interview that your comment is on, both in the context of 100T and Faze, and the industry as a whole. There’s countless examples and endless coverage of how the industry didn’t live up to the initial hype, and how many of the teams are losing money. There’s still money to be made, and there’s still interest in the scene, but it is a far cry from 2017-19 or so.
@FeintMotion4 ай бұрын
@@mrbp3351 Incorrect. Esports is going through a substantial contraction (I'd argue it's more of a correction) and is being floated by betting website and oil money. Those two funding sources are doing the vencap thing where they pump an entity and hope it meets a valuation expectation but if it doesn't they ditch it. This is the MOBA org gold rush of 2014-2015 again but there's an extra 0 on every check and transfer.
@netplayfalco73074 ай бұрын
@@mrbp3351Viewership does not really equate to much. It is really dependent on the average individuals commitment. Esports viewers don’t really equate to money, when viewership is free on KZbin or Twitch compared to normal sports where you need a league pass/subscription service. From there, the average viewer of these streams probably doesn’t own merchandise, whether physical like a teams jersey or t-shirt, or virtual merchandise like skins. The only thing holding esports up the last few years was crypto investors, like FTX and TSM, Coinbase and Liquid, Cloud9 and bc game, but with a majority of crypto struggling, a lot of these investors either pulled out or don’t invest nearly as much as they did. Sentinels in 2022 posted a huge 8 million loss, and it’s common for organizations to generally be in the red. Like last years Valorant Champions winner, Evil Geniuses, had to completely disband their team because even though they won the biggest Valorant event of the year, they still were in the red, had to lay off staff and sell some of their players. Last year, the prize pool for VCT was just over 2 million, and Evil Geniuses took 1m for being first. If each players salary was six figures, and the org takes 50% of the prize pool from the players, that means this event they broke even. And that’s the team that won the whole thing. Realistically, it’s only like 30% the org takes because they still have to pay staff, like marketers, social media managers, etc, so they need to make up 200k worth of merchandise. The question is, will they make up 200k worth of skins and jerseys? Probably not. I used Valorant as an example but this happens everywhere. From the failure of the Overwatch League, CoD, LoL, CS, Rocket League, Fortnite… long yap sesh but hope this answers your question

Nade is just being real. It is REALLY difficult to be profitable in esports. From the high costs of franchising and overvaluing, to the (rightfully) high demands of good salaries from players, and from how low returns are as the average fan/viewer isn’t close to as invested as the average sports fan, organizations will report losses year by year. The Overwatch League is a great example of high expectations leading to high failure, with not only teams but the whole league to fail. The only incentive into investing into esports is the passion for competing and seeing your team winning, or somehow having the fumes to run long enough that you build a legacy that then you get diehard fans, or as Nade said hopefully the next generation who grows up on it who will become diehards.

I was part of those three rounds of layoffs at 100T. I also worked at Epic Games for 5 years and helped ship Fortnite to a global audience prior to joining 100T. Matt (Nade) was a good CEO and I learned a lot watching him and speaking to him during my few years there. I was a partnerships manager and was directly involved in many of our largest sponsorship deals and saw things at their peak versus what the landscape looks like now. Esports is no walk in the park and this podcast was an amazing look through the mirror for everyone. Blue chip companies and brands are thinking twice about where they are investing their money and are realizing that there are better (more impactful) ways to connect with gamers. They saw esports as a means to attract and ultimately gain gamers as customers. When they saw the needle wasn’t moving the way they had hoped in conjunction with the current economic state it led to them pulling back those dollars significantly. Esports isn’t going anywhere, but it will look different in a few years.

As a loyal fan since 2018 of Colin and Samir, and an avid supporter of Nadeshot since like 2013 and 100 Thieves, I want to extend my heartfelt thanks for this episode. I've always hoped for an episode featuring both Matt and Jack. Growing up on KZbin and watching Nadeshot during his Minecraft Optic days, it’s incredible to see his journey from leaving Optic to founding 100 Thieves and achieving so much success in esports. This episode was particularly engaging as it addressed many questions I often ponder about 100 Thieves from a business perspective. Witnessing the challenges faced by gaming companies, especially the layoffs since 2023, has been tough. You’re right; individual creators don't always bring the same level of hype to an organization as a superstar athlete does to a team, like Bronny James to the Lakers. Each game has its own niche audience-when Rated and Tommey joined 100T, it was a big deal for COD fans, just like Octane’s return. Similarly, Timmy’s addition excited the Val and Apex communities. Hiko is another great example, staying on as a content creator after retiring. It’s challenging to maintain a unified fanbase when interests are so spread out. Personally, I follow VALORANT, LoL, and COD but don’t watch 100T’s Apex content. I’m sure there are others like me who focus on just one or two esports titles.

That’s cool and all but that’s not the point. The point is how can he make the company profitable. It’s easy to build hype for yourself and your Org to the point where you get millionaires to give you money and you go on to sign the best players….but it’s another thing to be able generate money from having all of them under your Org. It’s impossible to profit when the very same ppl you signed are a brand themselves. People would rather give their money to the player rather than the Org they’re on. The Org needs to take a % of what the players earn if they want to be profitable. It’s that simple. Giving them money to be in your group just isn’t enough

It’s probably one of the scariest ventures to go into to.. but the next step for ESPORTS is to move towards a streaming website specifically for esports. The scariest part is twitch having a chokehold on gaming. But whoever can figure it out will make A LOT of money.
@cammurray2553 ай бұрын
2 years ago I'd somewhat agree with that statement, but the way the landscape is today with how popular watchparties are that just wouldn't work, especially since the vast majority of watchparties are now finding the most success with people who aren't always constantly involved in the esports side. Sure you have people like NiceWigg with Apex who's entire involvement in the game is the esports, and somewhat to the same degree you have Tarik in Valorant etc etc, but the majority of huge watchparty creators are doing content unrelated to the esports side for 95% of the time until a tournament in their game shows up and then they co-stream, and then it's back to their standard schedule of content until the next one rolls around. The big esports streaming platform isn't going to fork out millions in creator contracts for creators that only stream esports twice a month at best and all those creators are going to stick to their Twitch/KZbin contracts.

I think in relation to traditional sports franchises the major difference is esports are dynamic while traditional sports are static. Soccer, basketball, etc. change rules but not games.. Esports $$$ will continue to rise and fall as different games come and go. I guess in esports there are genres like FPS, BR, etc. that have staying power similar to traditional sports.

Nade started grinding cod from his gaming chair in his bedroom and became one of the most influential gamers of all time and started one of the most loved gaming brands ever. Absolute fkn legend

Nade's dad arc is going crazy! I'm glad he has properly prioritized his time and realizes his mistakes he's made along the way.

I love nadeshot, I feel like I’ve grown up alongside him, I watched him in 6050 with the boys, it’s sad to see how much the last 7 years has crippled him, hoping him being back around the optic boys brings back his confidence

Been watching Nade and following 100T since like 2018. Feel like the dude has gone down a rabbit hole and it’s driving him insane. Hope he can find his way out

- Pay creators a minimum wage - Convert some space to rooms - Release shares to creators - Create a team locally that grinds together for 5 years - Cash out *hire accordingly for content etc, make strategic decisions, get Drake involved, easy to sell at 1B * Nade should completely handover until he's rejuvenated

I feel like 100T has the balance right, get people on their esports, then sell associated lifestyle merch. People are unlikely to buy an esport jersey to wear around, but a dope shirt with the subtle logo adds a bit of IYKYK element to the purchase. Love their League team btw. Go Sniper.

Sometimes you need to contract before you expand again. Loved the candor in this and getting insight in an industry I’ve never tapped into before!

i was basically raised by nadeshot and optic. i can't say so for other esports, but specifically with call of duty esports the biggest problem in my opinion is that when franchising happened it did bring a more dense talent pool which naturally resulted in more compelling matches, but it also brought traditional investors who aren't in it because they genuinely love it. nade was right when he said competitive call of duty is like the wwe of esports. it's very theatrical, in your face, brash, and unrivaled shit talking. it's why call of duty is my favorite esport

You guys should take a look at Karmine Corp in France where they actually execute a lot of suggestions you guys have : a stadium (not theirs but they have residency in an arena), storytelling, a nemesis in France with Vitality and in Spain with Koi and a lot more business venturse they are exploring.
