You know, all of Luna's episode appearance start to make sense now. At first, in Luna Eclipsed, Luna was almost ignorant about how her actions carried over to her present time, taking in the town's folk rejected pretty badly to the point of giving up interaction with them. What happens next time we see her? She's in Scootaloo's dream right, but what's so special about her first appearance in the dream realm? Well, the fact she has little control over the dream. She struggled to come in contact with her in her first dream and was even pushed back out when her dream was coming to an end. Comparing that to next time we see Luna in Sweetie Belle's dream, she is entirely in control of the dream realm. With a stomp of a hoof she shifts reality and bends the dream to her will. After that, Luna visits Applebloom where she not only has the same amount of control when she sees her, but can even begun to merge dreams together as she did with her other friends. What does that all say about Luna's power? That it was a work in progress. Think about it, if Luna had the obligation of guiding a pony through their nightmares, why would she feel her role as the Princess of the Night not be sufficient and cause her to rebel against her sister? She probably didn't have this duty until AFTER she returned from the moon. I think Luna took to studying dream magic in order to create the Tantibus after she saw how badly Ponyville had reacted to her because of her past. She wanted to make sure she never forgot about what she did and ended up finding her role in Equestria in the process.

Considering that the comics are not cannon, this means that it is possible that Nightmare Moon was more of a psychotic break rather than a glorified demon possession. This means that Nightmare Moon and Luna are the same being like how Twilight can become that flame monster, only instead of anger feeding into her magic it's grief and self loathing, this also means that there is still a part of Luna that hates the world for the abuse/neglect she suffered 1000 years ago and the EoH simply gave Luna the ability to control her overwhelming emotions.

The comics are B-Canon, meaning it's canon until something from the show says otherwise. While the Nightmare Rarity arc didn't give a clear explanation as to where the Nightmare Force came from, issue 24 offered an explanation, that the force originated from MLP's equivalent of Ancient Egypt. My personal head canon for this whole thing is that Luna was Nightmare Moon at first, but over time, lost control of the energy and it generated a mind of its own.
