Spike really is an interesting character, seeing as how he can somehow be incredibly subservient and self-sacrificing at time, while at others he is incredibly greedy, indulgent and exploitative. This would normally seem incongruent characterization, but I think it fits perfectly with his fear of abandonment as hinted by Sombra's mirror. Whether he's zealously slaving away for Twi, Rarity or Applejack, or lounging on a couch while being fed gemstones by doting crystal ponies, it's really two sides of the same thing. Spike wants to be loved and appreciated. That's really the core of his character. This episode... wasn't great, but one thing it did do right IMO is portray both sides of Spike. The faithful assistant and the greedy child. And it did so without making him incompetent (see Spike at your service), merely over his head, or selfish (see Just for Sidekicks), merely head-bloated.

I think in Spike's case in regards to the dragon sneeze trees, it appeared that Twilight's house was in the outer districts of Canterlot, so low chance of encountering those plot device trees in the past..

This episode has a horrible moral. Never try to help someone who is unable to deal with issues themselves because then you will get flooded and sneeze at inconvenient times. Mark this one as "How Many Says Can we Abuse Spike: The Episode". It would have been soooo much better had his selfish acts resulted in the problems and then his OWN good acts from the beginning resolving them... or even getting help from Cadence through asking or her seeing there were problems and intervening.

So Cadence, a so called friend of Twilight and another Princess who clearly has nothing else to do, entrusts the responsibilities of a Princess to a child, and when the child messes up - as expected - she takes absolutely no responsibility for her bad desision and judgement. She has no right lecturing Spike on being a princess, because he is a fucking kid, and she IS a Princess who asked him to do this. She should take over and solve things so Twilight can sleep. This was all on her I don't see how anyone can blame Spike. Cadence is worst Princess and I hope she dies.

Channel Ninbikun Cadance could be a much better character if the show decided to give her more of a personality. Instead, she was just shoehorned in because they needed a princess for A Canterlot Wedding and now the show staff doesn't really seem to know what to do with her.

Channel Ninbikun That's all an awful cynical way to look at it and a little over the top in reaction. May I suggest reining in a bit and considering a few things? Cadence didn't entrust any responsibilities to Spike. She asked him to make sure nobody disturbed Twilight. Everything else Spike did, he took upon himself and then took to an extreme. At one point, Cadence tried to remind him to not overstep himself. Spike lied and assured her that he wouldn't. To which, she gave him a chance to prove himself. It wasn't until after he abused his connection to Twilight that Cadence had to come and lecture him. I could only speculate as to whether or not she knew everything he did (the massage, the painting, the gem-salad bowls) but she definitely knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that something was wrong on the second time around. Spike was about to apologize on his own when the castle was suddenly flooded. The fallen trees and broken water mane is an example of what happens when people try to take over a leadership position when they're not ready. When there are conflicting agendas between departments (the chainsaw and the jackhammer versus Twilight's sleeping), a good leader can find ways for them to work around each other. Twilight knows how to do that (Winter Wrap Up). Spike, as he is now, cannot. Instead of taking it on himself, he should have deferred it back to one of the other princesses or maybe even gathered the lumberjack and the plumber to figure out a temporary solution. That's what I saw when I watched this. I know a lot of other people didn't. That's perfectly fine and understandable. But I do wish people would try to consider ways that characters and stories work a few times before they jump to how the story doesn't work. More so, even if it is a bad story - we don't need a negative reaction of this magnitude. Nobody benefits from it and it's just us making ourselves look bad.

Brawny Buck I am not going to accept that a child had any responsibility for anything bad that happened in the episode. If you see that a child is about to drive a car, you're not going to give him a chance to prove himself, you will get him out of it before he kills someone. And when he does kill people, the responsibility will be of those who let him drive it in the first place. I find it disgusting that this episode even attemts to put any responsibility on Spike for his actions. This was all on Cadence, 100% and she never even attempted to take even a little blame for the events. Spike is not her student, Spike is not learning to be a princess, Spike is a kid, an average person who shouldn't do any of the things Cadence saw him do. She should've stepped in when she saw that people were going to Twilight, she's a Princess, she is the one who should've taken over her role and not for a second expect Spike to handle anything. The massage and stuff like that are all perfectly okay with me, of course he will do that and he deserves it after all that crap he has to go through. In fact Cadence should have given him a massage after her mistakes in this episode. I don't care that Spike used Twilight for his own personal gain, that's alright. But not for a second tell me that when Cadence saw that people are still seeking out Twilight when she's resting she trusted Spike to handle the requests of the people, and that's alright. It is not, she's a disgusting, lazy whore, who doesn't take responsibility for her mistakes and blames it on a dragon child who has no place dealing with princess duties. She's an evil fucking devilbitch and I hope her own husband kills her.

Check Channel Ninbikun ´s blind reactions to S4 and then her "chalkboards" with the review of each episode; then you would get why she needs to "dump" this emotions first before analizing things.
