As soon as you mention the children didn't wake and the dog didn't bark it was clear it was an inside job. Really sad for the neighbour who was terrified into giving a false confession.

Speaking of a shack, my father brought me along with him in the early 1970s to visit a man who lived along the roadside in a shack in Ohio. It seemed to be mostly made of corrogated steel. I was glad to see that the government didn't bother him about building codes. I think the room was lit by an oil lamp. Not a single mouse was seen. I must say that his couch was comfortable, and he lived such a simple, uncluttered, cozy lifestyle that the visit is still a fond memory. I'm glad that I had a father and grandfather who would drive me down backroads and visit interesting people they knew. To this very day, I like to take the long way home (just like the song by "Supertramp"). BTW: I believe dogskins confession was coerced.

Out of curiosity I looked at the "Find A Grave" site and while I didn't find a cause of death for the son, who may have died at birth, I found info for the daughter Marie. Besides the loss of this poor little girl, the saddest thing is that someone took her life and we'll never really know for sure who did. Plus, these two fellows are both getting their names tarnished forever in time when obviously only one of them deserves it. My personal feelings is that I think the father could be involved and the biggest clue to me is that the dog didn't even wake up. Having dogs most of my life, I can't see any of them not alerting me if a stranger was breaking in the house. Either way, this is just very sad. What a beautiful little girl she was. RIP Annie ❤ 💐

When you said that the other children didn't wake up & that the dog didn't bark I immediately thought that it had to have been a family member or at least someone known to family, then when you stated that the dad gave conflicting stories I pegged him as the person that did it . I do recall this story mentioned as a chapter in a book on notorious Wisconsin crimes (although I didn't really read it). I do appreciate the refresher. I'm leaning more towards the father, and the mother for her part as well. I really don't see the scapegoat being involved, since there wasn't really actual evidence (or testing) to link him as an "intruder". An inside job to cover their ends, in my opinion.

It is totally perplexing. Maybe Wisconsin had special rules back then, because even in the 1800s, there was generally no statute of limitations for murder, meaning a person could be prosecuted for murder even decades after the crime occurred; this practice largely continues today as murder is considered a heinous crime with no time limit for prosecution in most jurisdictions

This isn't the first case I've heard where an angry father reacted with violence against a very young child who was irritating them. Then they panic and start making up stories, usually about some stranger who quietly got past multiple locked doors. Then dad wakes up and sees the phantom perp who either "fights" with dad (causing very superficial wounds) or makes his escape. The phantom perp always has a black ski mask and is so generic he'll never be identified. Whether its a spouse or kid, the dad or other family members are on the list of "persons of interest".

I knew that had to be a false confession, they were using fear tactics to try and get a confession out of Dogskin, and it worked. I definitely believe it was the father. Not only did he treat his own daughter's body with cruelty and disrespect, he willingly let an innocent man go to prison for his crime. Although his actions were stupid and reckless, I doubt his intention was to kill her. He should have just confessed and taken his chances. Coward.
