A year ago we had one of those job expos at our UNI and SAAB had a booth there. We expected them to have like electric car motors there or whatever but were instead greeted by missile launchers and automatic weapons. A bit surprised we asked since when they made weapons and they laughed and replied "We always did".

Saab also makes submarines these days through its subsidiary SAAB Kockums, probably the hardest to detect submarines in the world. Anyways, combat aircraft came first, cars only second and they used to make SAAB Scania trucks.

That's exactly my experience in gripen. Matches over before you get in range, gun refuses to kill a single craft, and when you get a guy flat spinning there are 50 friendlies lining up for the steal

SAAB is an acronym for Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget, meaning The Swedish Airplane Corporation Limited. Making cars came later, but I there’s already other posts about that. I sold my old SAAB 9-5 last year, it was 23 years old and I had kept it because the family begged me not to sell it. Hadn’t drove it myself for about 8 years, but the kids and Mrs used it. But at last it needed some TLC that was way over the budget. Second hand car company fixed it up and I’m sure it’s still rolling as it’s engine had many miles left. Has been driving Volvos V60’s since GM put a dagger into the heart of SAAB. Great cars, even if it’s own by China now.

The JAS39 gripen is made by saab, saab was in the beginning an aircraft manufacturer. So actually, it's an aircraft company that made cars as well. Btw, saab stands for "svenska aeroplan aktiebolaget" (swedish aeroplane joint-sstock-company)

The main business for SAAB had always been related to home defence equipment, such as jet fighters missiles, radars, munitions, and recently submarines. Cars was a civilian business that was sold out quite a few years ago.

It was not a car company making a jet fighter, it was rather a company that made aircraft that also made cars. The car division was actually started to have some place to use their knowledge after the end of WW2, and the car division were later sold off.
