A Car Stopped by Real Infrastructure on the Georgia-Meade Bikeway

Riding Bikes in San Diego

Riding on Meade in Normal Heights, it looks like a driver hit their car into a boulder that's specifically placed so that a driver can't jump the curb where pedestrians wait to cross the road.
This is real infrastructure. I'd rather one car be damaged than that car hitting other cars and people through an intersection, or someone walking a dog on the sidewalk or something.
Thanks for watching.
These videos can be scary, but please know that my goal isn't to deter people from riding bikes in San Diego, but to show the real-world conditions. Sometimes it's pleasant, sometimes it's just fine, and other times there's tension and conflict.
The roads in San Diego should be safe and accessible to everyone without the use of a car. My hope is that these videos help those in power make better decisions for all our safety. I also believe that the more people who decide to ride, the safer the roads will become.
Please remember to support your local bike safety and mobility advocacy organizations, like BikeSD (bikesd.org/), the San Diego County Bike Coalition (sdbikecoalitio...) and Circulate San Diego (www.circulates...)

Real infrastructure can look nice like this too. It looks much better than the concrete bollards that line some crosswalks.

I wonder of those people off to the right were in the car?

While I appreciate the infrastructure on the Meade bike lane, the implementation is problematic. The bike lane abruptly ending in a low curb at every traffic circle, with only a white paint line to warn the rider of the upcoming obstacle is horrible. Added to that, the nature of the curb changes as one rides from one end to the other. One rainy night, riding downhill, the paint was not obvious and I hit one of the curbs and damaged my front wheel. At least I didn't endo.

Thanks for pointing this out, @brickrobbins6464! It's definitely the case that the lanes get pinched off at the traffic circles on Meade, and, in my opinion, the worst part is that they get pinched off in different ways, so there's a bunch of inconsistency. This is just wild speculation on my part, but when SANDAG did this project, it was really big, and I get the sense that they did a bunch of different approaches just to try things out. On the other hand, the differences force drivers to slow down more. Still, when I approach a circle and a driver is nearby, I find I often have to raise a hand to have them slow, and take the lane a house or two before we get there.

I think this is acceptable as long as this is not the main route a cyclist would take, i.e. it's just for access to the street. The main routes should be more direct and away from pollution and noise from cars.

Hate to break it to you, @jattikuukunen, but this is the main road a cyclist would take, as it's the only road with a dedicated bike lane the whole length from the 805 to the 15 (ECB has a Bus/Bike lane, but also lots more traffic turning, and the pavement quality is lousy). Personally, I bike this just about every day, and it's a solid road to use.

@@jattikuukunen This IS the main E/W route. It is about as far away from pollution and noise as one gets in the Mid Cities area. I ride this a lot, I know the road and the infrastructure but in the rain and dark, I still hit one of the shark fin shaped "traffic calming" islands that jut into the bike lane at every traffic circle. If I had gone over the handlebars I would have been toast. Instead I just rode home on a damaged wheel. I see no good reasons for those hazards to be there. At least they eventually painted them yellow.

@@RidingBikesinSanDiego too bad. It's good that it does it for you, but most people wouldn't feel comfortable riding on that.
