100% true, seen one with the valves burned up, which caused misfires, and it took out an EGR valve and never tripped the CEL. Found the issue when we ran the car for 10 minutes on the lift and the front cat turned cherry freaking red.

Unfortunately in the Chicago suburbs, the thieves have taken so many catalytic converters that they probably don't even get old enough for this to even happen because some people's catalytic converters have been stolen two or three times 😩

I don't mess around with my wife's 2023 Kia Soul. She liked the car and bought it anyway. It's not the worst car out there, I used to drive a Mitsubishi Mirage. I knew what she was getting into, that's why I change the oil every 4k miles, I only use 91 or 93 octane (the compression ratio is 12:1 on this engine) and I drop a bottle of Techron cleaner every oil change. Since new has had that 2.0L "Nu" engine clatter that's a hallmark of this engine design. I also drop a quart of the 0W-30 and the rest is 0W-20, it quiets down the clatter. I'm looking to get 10 years out of the car, which is the length of the powertrain warranty.

Nissan/Infiniti went even further on the early 5.6l V8s. The top end of the cats deteriorates from fuel trim shifting rich as the engine ages, and the little grains of ceramic carrier get slowly sucked back into the engine by the exhaust back-pressure and pulsing. They grind the rings and walls down like sand.

It can do a lot more than cause pre ignition. A lot of modern vehicles use catalyst material in the exhaust manifold inches after the exhaust valves. This is a problem because a lot of modern vehicles don’t use EGR valves anymore; they handle exhaust gas recirculation via valve timing. The exhaust valve hangs open for a split second during the intake stroke so it can recirculate some of the exhaust gases for emissions purposes. On vehicles with these two designs, the catalyst material can end up breaking up and actually get sucked back into the combustion chamber. This was a huge issue with the early Nissan QR25DE engines.

Also the Nissan Armada/Titan with the V8 is known for the catalyst honeycomb breaking apart. Due to the design of the engine/exhaust, there is a backdraft that’s created and it sucks the broken catalyst into the cylinder head. That absolutely wrecks your valvetrain/head/cylinders/pistons/etc.

Funny I see this video now. Just been overhauling my 2011 kia sorento after it was down for 4 years because of bad transmission. Afyer fixing the transmission the engine had no power despite having a full tune up on the engine. Troubleshooting I noticed the exhuast system was badly clogged. Took it off the car and found the upper cat attached to the exhaust manifold had its honeycomb fall apart and completely clogged the secondary cat. Just got both replacements in today so I can put them on this weekend

3 cats must be 07+ gm... This is why I drive a 2002 with long tube headers. Trailblazer SS intake 207 heads lq9 Pistons in an lq4 block with a stage 2 cam. Yes, it has extremely high compression ratio with the lq9 Pistons and the 207 heads, but she's a ripper I naturally aspiration

In the Nissan V6, it sneaks up on you. Your piston rings will get clogged because of the back pressure and your engine slowly becomes an oil burner.

Mr2 spyder had a huge issue with this issue the pre-cat is also the exhaust headers my 2001 at 58k had the pre-cat cause catastrophic damage and since my warranty was at 60k I did get a full rebuild for free but it was lame I still have the car but now have better magnaflow pre cat

Those peices of cat can and will get pushed to the muffler as well if not caught in time, usually customer will state it makes rattling noise all the time when it's running, check engine light is on and I catch a wiff of rotten eggs at times" . Love where I live because the cats can be cut out & straight piped vehicle can be re-programmed to run without considering those cost an arm and leg to replace.

Nissan 2.5 liter motors cats would break and be sucked into the engine resulting in accelerated engine wear. Tell tail sign was greenish motor oil.
