So all we have left is the main game with skins, which we know Blizzard is all about, and balance, which the devs have... certainly tried on. Back when Overwatch was taking over as the predominant hero shooter, Team Fortress 2 had a similar issue. Sometimes games get old, repetitive, or just outclassed by new games. There’s no shame in creators trying to expand their horizons to: 1. Have fun 2. Stay relevant As long as they’re not actively burning bridges for no reason. In fact, a TF2 creator basically made the same video explaining that we should be encouraging creators stuck in their niches to do other things so that they can see their potential and not go insane doing the same thing over and over again. What we should be mad at, like Flats says, is to be mad at ActBlizz because they’re running their game into the ground. We should be banding together to advocate for a better gaming experience. Love ya guys, love ya Flats! Let’s hope for better luck with OW and our content creators.

Great take, but I'd like to point out that OW has a bigger problem in that nowadays there is little involvement with the community. The most recent thing we had was the creator gamemode and that was a long while ago, and even now the workshop is in a state of disarray. With TF2, there are Valve-recognized tournaments and map competitions. The modding scene is gigantic too (custom sprays, skins, modes, maps, emotes, etc.). In my mind, there are two ways OW can go about this. One: Provide additional unique content to reignite the passion for the game. Considering how old this game is, this is very very difficult as many of the ideas have already been implemented. Two: Fix all the tools that were made available to creators and give all the tools into the hands of the community so they can make interesting things again. It does have a drawback though. Once players have those tools, you can no longer easily monetize the game through battlepasses and skins anymore, since the community can just download their own.

@ True True. OW is having a completely different issue but both games are still standing in their own ways. TF2 just had the tools so that the community could create stuff and Valve could officially support or create more content after dropping support. OW has content changing but the community has no access to the tools they really need with ActBlizz not really being proactive or really reactive to community feedback. Either way I really hope we get access to a more open functional workshop cause community created stuff is so cool!

The original tweet wasn't even lying though, it was just unlucky that they had said that in chat and then jay had replied with the "we dont talk about ow here" out loud to what he said in game neither side was malicious in what was being said, the real issue was all the fallout from that tweet with people using it as an excuse to air out their grievances (warranted or not) with jay and then jay crashing out and basically saying that this dude was lying just to spread misinformation about me, when in fact it was just their experience when they hopped onto the stream, and that led to people attacking that person for no reason and them deleting their account

You want to know the reality of it Flats? The competition is exactly what has the Overwatch community shaken. The fandom here has been mocking and poking at every attempt, even constantly playing off TF2 players despite the game still being active, and now they're finally on that end of the stick. It's making them insecure. They don't want to see people like Frogger or you, or Jay, or anyone else playing another hero shooter because it puts the thoughts in their head that they're playing the wrong game now. Notably, some hardcore Rivals players are in the same place, because people sticking to Overwatch bothers them too.

In cases like this, negativity is actually the positive driving force to make OW finally start giving a damn and making people want to play the game again. If there is any hope of OW returning to its roots in becoming the iconic IP it once was, this negative energy stemming from Rivals arrival is the key, as Flats said they will either adapt or be left behind. Unfortunately, I don't know how much hope I have that the developers and Blizzard will actively get off their ass and make an effort, and on top of that they progress at a snail's pace, the 6v6 "experiment" being a prime example of that. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst, I look forward to seeing OW redeem itself, but we'll have to see if that ever manifests, now back to Rivals.

Also with that, negativity needs to actually be used correctly for it to be a good driving force. Expressing how you feel about the game and what you wish to see in the future is good, and people should do that, however if the community being the community sees that post and says "fuck you OW hated get off my game fucking loser!!!!" suddenly the player who expressed his dissatisfaction might not feel comfortable in the community of the game, and thus be driven away. OW players need to stop fighting each other and come together to push for a more successful game from a place of care and love, and express it correctly. An okay friend will support you no matter what, a good friend will help you how they can, but a true friend will tell you if you're the one that's in the wrong, and strive to help you become a better you with zero obligation to, out of care.

I actually disagree, and for a simple reason, people have been negative towards OW since forever, MR players that are negative towards OW rarely have any constructive criticism, they are just bashing the game, and half the time their complaints are outdated, I've heard a lot of "heroes on the battle pass" this past month, so what is a dev supposed to do with that negativity except ignore it and work on the game instead. I do like that OW now has a very successful competitor though, cause that's something that can make Microsoft open their eyes and invest more on OW, and can even make companies do more hero shooters in the future, as the "hero shooter are a saturated market" line was proved wrong.

​@@wyvzrn Many of Marvel Rival's players are just OW1/OW2 fans to begin with, fundamentally every single one of them has a reason why they are playing MR over OW2 and are so critical of OW2. There is already plenty of valid criticism for OW2 that went unaddressed. The reason people mention "heroes on the battle pass" to this day is not because they haven't seen them walking it back, but because in the sea of people saying anything and everything to defend OW2 - this is one thing that should have never happened in the first place. (not to mention several fans and streamers that defended such a practice.) It's a reminder about what Blizzard tried to do while their fans and creators kept giving them one benefit of the doubt after another over and over again. If you are okay with accepting things as they are (being "reasonable" with criticism) - doesn't mean others have to. Just because monetization is out of developer's hands doesn't mean it shouldn't be the center of attention.

I don't see the MR one because I don't play it (it's a good game but I'm not in the mood of playing competitive games in general, I didn't played OW since season 14 start neither), but the OW reddit is filled with fans of MR talking shit about players and the game all the time. I've only started playing overwatch in the last 2 years and I've started taking it seriously in the last year. I'm really enjoying the game. The process of learning and getting better has been amazing. Currently in masters 3, I hope I'll hit top 500 next season. I did try rivals, but it didn't hit me nearly as much as overwatch does. And it is a little sad to see almost no overwatch content anymore, but I get it. Most of you have been playing ow for 8 years sitting in top 500, I can't even imagine how stale it must've gotten for you. Rivals must be such a breath of fresh air. I get wanting ow content, but it's INSANE to me that people demand it. You guys do what brings you joy.

Man, I do feel bad for the people who don’t or can’t play rivals. I have over 100 friends on overwatch and until a couple months ago, there were consistently 7-10 people online at all times. Rivals is doing what OW was doing back in 2015. Go back to 2015 and remember how you couldn't go onto twitch, youtube, or gaming news without a mention of OW. Rivals was under development and saw everything bad with OW and made changes accordingly. OW was at a brisk jog, Rivals came out in a full sprint, OW needs to increase it's pace to catch up.

I kinda have the opposite experience. None of my friends stay in Rival after Sue Storm, I get shit on by the Rivals players for simply saying I enjoy OW2 and think it's genuinely good. I think one of the big reasons people like Marvel Rivals more than overwatch isnt just that its giving them that same magic that overwatch had, but also the fact that they get to play their favorite comic book characters, or that they will be able to play their favorite comic book characters.

I just love Marvel Rivals because the characters ARE THEIR CHARACTERS! We have Melee characters THAT ARE ACTUALLY PLAYABLE and we're not forced to play all the hitscan, COD characers because the Devs focus on them, make them stronger and ignore the other more versatile/creative characters, or even nerfs them into a fucking grave and make them unplayable. R.I.P Genji.💯 It's nice being able to play what Genji SHOULD'VE been in Black Panther and not need a Nano Boost + Dragon Toothpick, plus Mercy Tether, plus Zen Discord and healing, plus my entire team focused around my gameplay just to get a TINY fraction of value. In Marvel Rivals, I actually have the same chance to win and do well playing as Black Panther as I would playing as the generic COD based characters(Punisher, Soldier 76, etc).🙌🏾 Although they did Nerf Black Panther for no reason, so I am a little worried that they pull a "Blizzard" and make yet another one of my favorite characters completely unplayable, but as of right now, we're okay. Only time will tell.

I think the issue is less of a “my favorite streamer isn’t playing overwatch” and more of “none of the big streamers are playing overwatch.” For instance, the potential success and reimplementation of 6v6 is directly tied to user engagement during the current trial, but that requires the stated engagement. If basically NONE of the big streamers are covering OW or putting honest effort into the trial, then it kills the hype train before it ever leaves the station. Streamers can absolutely make or break a game through their community, and those streamers are currently pulling their audiences away from picking OW back up at possibly its most critical point. I’m not saying don’t play what you want, but as a 6v6 preacher, it kills me knowing it possibly won’t be successful with part of the reason being that a huge portion of the community isn’t even aware it’s going on

I think you're right, though this only shows that Blizzard picked the worst possible timing for the 6v6 test. I guess they assumed 6v6 would be big enough to draw people away from Rivals and that's why they released it around Rivals' release. Well, that didn't work out at all. Had they released 6v6 before Rivals, I think it would've stood a much better chance. Now we're in this situation, and as a 6v6 enjoyer myself, I worry as well that this test phase will conclude with Blizzard deciding 6v6 isn't a format the community cares about.

The bottom line is that OW has very little to no momentum right now and the devs botched the release of basically the only thing that could’ve helped build it back up IMO. Honestly, for the greater community, the effort might’ve been too little too late on blizzards part and despite what flats says, I wouldn’t be surprised if within 1-2 years ( or less) that this game goes the way of Heroes of the Storm.

Hell for as much as I think Samito did a massive disservice for all the push he did just to say the logical *Why stay for a product when its not trying to impress you*, Its not really his job to keep going forward with it along with any other streamer who already has trouble's trying to make overwatch content at its most barren state. One of the things that makes Rivals so enjoyable on a wider scale is the Smash Bros or even Marvel vs Capcom approach where people get to play as their favorite iconic characters in a fighting game for the 2 i mentioned and a shooter for Rivals. It's hard to get people to care abt characters that are made up also on top of a genre that was very isolated on top of ow just stopping their cinematics to get people interested.

Im gonna be real, the twitter situation could have been dealt with way better by everyone involved. Op misinterpreted a comment from Jay3 and makes a tweet. Tweet goes viral and comes to content creators attention. Jay3 responds calling them a liar with his fans deciding to drag OP through the mud resulting in a deleted account. This all could have been avoided if people literally just talked to each other. On other notes watching Jay3 saying Awkward “might not be that bad” and crashing out has been euphoric karma for the way he dealt with this.

In the last few years, executives, mismanagement, company drama, layoffs, greed and the pandemic have all had their share in killing what overwatch 2 was meant to be. But over the last month, when I search “Overwatch” into youtube, I just feel miserable because of what i see. Yes it’s easy to ignore it, but blegh, I miss the joy xD. I do want new streamers to rise out the ashes. There is definitely drama farming from SOME creators and mass sheep herd mentality from the community. The base game is still a great game, the staff are probably completely different to the ones who disappointed you. I still enjoy playing it, but at THIS moment in time, the community itself is trying consciously or unconsciously to kill overwatch. Eventually I’ll stop searching overwatch, then the algorithm takes it’s toll. Just my opinion, I’m sure I’ll be hammered in the comments but I feel I should probably say it somewhere, and I’ve learnt to expect that response every time I try show any interest in this game. I’m glad rivals will force Overwatch to try harder (altho i dont think 6v6 is the answer), but the community will neuter it’s success. There’s a difference from - “Overwatch learning lessons and getting better!” Vs “look at pathetic overwatch it’s too late to save the dead game” - the tones are very different and the community chooses some of that narrative! I suspect that the dust will settle in a few months and the joy of hating will settle. Just enjoy both games or the game you prefer!!! :) - this isn’t about Jay obviously.

I think one of the problems is that a lot of people like watching their favourite streamer because they not only like that streamers personality but also because they liked watching them play the hero/character that they play in ow; after rewatching a bunch of the old flats rein videos from ow1 it's made me really sad that I don't get to see flats play and have that experience anymore. Ow used to be a really enjoyable experience to watch as well as play and now everyone is moving on and the people who don't really enjoy watching rivals as much are getting left behind-I think it's fine if flats wants to move on and play a different game from now on but it's still really sad for some people to go from watching the old videos of the game they loved watching (through whichever streamer they watched) to not being able to watch that anymore

I guess content creators aren't allowed to just be bored with a game, either. Imagine cranking out days, weeks, months, or even years worth of video after video playing the same game. A game that outside of the occasional event or skins hasn't changed since OW2 launched, and honestly, since OW launched. When something new comes out in the same genre, of course you're going to want to try it. You play some, you like it, and you start making fresh content with a new game, and your channel grows. Why wouldn't any streamer or content creator want to put out videos about a game that's alive and thriving? Flats is exactly right. The mere fact that Rivals exists and is doing well is exactly what every OW lover should dream of. A game that makes your developers get off their butts and start doing what the original OW crew did, which is try to keep attracting new players with new stuff, not just new artwork updates or something else to buy in the store. New maps, new game modes, new heroes with something different than the 40 heroes before them. Both games can exist, and people can play and enjoy both. Tribalism isn't good.

rivals legit brought me back to hero shooters in general. i redownloaded OW for the first time since 2018. do i still enjoy rivals wayy more yes. more fun, more creative team comps, iconic characters, balancing being very touch and go. all of the things i said applied to overwatch at launch. then multi heroes went away, then creative team comps got nerfed with role lock, then it went to 5v5. along with all of the things that go people in the door with OW like the character cinematic trailers, events, etc. all of which are very watered down or recycled (at least from what ive seen). Rivals feels like OW on launch to me where it was the wild west full of content to be had, now playing it i just feel nostalgia for what it once was. like flats said, rivals finally bringing a competitor to ow is the best chance at injecting life back into OW and genuinely hope it happens

None of us owe anything to Overwatch and much less Blizzard. You guys treat this like it's a religion or some family obligation. Blizzard is a company that put profit and money above the playerbase at every turn, ruining what could have been a timeless and excellent game all on their own just to squeeze more pennies out of us. WE didn't do that, THEY did. I'm glad Overwatch is sinking and I hope Rivals continues to dominate them, because they earned this. Like obviously flats is right on this, but simultaneously the reason myself and many others are upset that creators aren't covering OW is because of the lack of coverage for the 6v6 test. It was the most fun I've had in years playing OW, and I desperately want it to be the main format. To me, 6v6 is one big step to bringing back the old OW magic. And yet almost no OW creators are covering it. Which is sad imo, because I care about OW, not the "hero shooter genre" or MR, I care about OW. It has characters and ideas that I love, but most importantly to me, it has a gameplay loop that no one has ever successfully replicated, not even MR. MR is a very different game to OW, so when the game I love is only brought up in comparisons to this very different game that I don't enjoy playing, talking about how the other one is better in every way, I'm upset. So yes, the tweet was stupid, as are the comments that are complaining that their streamer wasn't doing what they wanted. But simultaneously, that sentiment, that some of the largest creators(and arguably faces of the community) in the OW sphere have abandoned the game, aren't unfounded.

I mean, MR is a new game and is putting an effort to fix things or change stuff - so far. OW, in the other hand, spit in the face of many fans and had years of feedback. Feedback that they ignored or implemented with their own twist.

MR is far from perfect, but it's new, and for now has a track record of trying to fix things. The problem of OW2 is not that the game is bad, its an amazing game, uts that Blizzard is the wors company ever and they actively go against their audience. They are ruining OW1's legacy

People get upset because creators stop making any type of overwatch content. Personally I didn’t enjoy rivals but I don’t mind content creators making rivals content. The problem is that they no longer make any piece of overwatch content, most people just want something, maybe an overwatch video every now and then
