When using the fluke and test lamp ,it reminds me of when i was in training in 84..A group of us in the class where testing an ignition fault and where adamant there was nothing wrong as ,after all we had battery voltage .The instructor then explained why we should have used the test lamp that was there .That lesson has stayed with me to this day ,where i am now explaining it to apprentices

man, everyone's a critic. realistically, the wires were fine, and the other shop is not going to do anything other than give the vehicle back to the customer as is, fixed. His job was to diagnose, he went above and beyond.

@Jason Bowman when he got to that bit, I was thinking he was going to repair the wires. But then I also thought, if it's my car, I think I'd rather keep the original connectors and wires rather than having a spliced-in repair. If the copper is all still good, then the original wires are fine to take current. And it's a ground, so even if the insulation fails later it won't be a problem.

I think the youtubers your talking about has more to the story then just the tool. I dont use the load pro personally and that's not because its a bad tool. I'm just use to my test methods. I have the load pro on my fluke i just dont use a meter much. Its a scope and test light for me. I definitely believe it does what it says it does.

ALWAYS check power circuits with a suitable load. I like to put at least 50% of what the fuse rating. On heavier circuits 10 or 12 amps is usually enough

Hey Dan, if you want a great upgrade for your test light, Order the OTC 3642 truck test light, the cord is twice as long and it has the big clip on the end. You can just swap the cord to your mini test light

Your multimeter is fine to do measurements, but you always have to make sure that the component is activated. Your multimeter would show 0v as well if you used your Autel to activate the fans while measuring.

We have an apprentice who has just started at our workshop, and last week we had a donkey engine that would not crank. However we had 12 volts everywhere where we should, so it was assumed that the starter was bad. Luckily I know the importance of putting a circuit under load before committing to a component replacement. As soon as we put the circuit under load, the voltage dropped to 4 volts. And you guessed it, it was a bad Earth. Well done Dan for showing how easy it is to be tricked by a good voltage reading.

I usually go softer when cleaning tined terminals. Expoed copper tends to oxidize really fast.

When I was about 13 years old I used to "help" my Dad fix the car. He told me to always put Vaseline on battery terminals, "because it conducts electricity". Many years later I tested this theory with a multimeter. Of course Vaseline does not conduct electricity, it just keeps the air out of the places that aren't in contact. In a situation like Dan has just shown I would have greased the connections. I live in a remote area and don't have easy access to fancy sprays so I'll use what I have to hand.

Your problem with forming understandable sentences makes me wonder in what area of electrical repair or maintenance you are working at . A professional electrician? Nah, I don't think so. I try to understand , a buck is a deer, in electronics? where? inside a wire? And last time I checked we had Euro's. Bitching about the price for an aftermarket key is pathetic. Be happy that it is possible to program and sell them. 250 Euro's and more for OEM. I needed a second key for my 2016 Skoda Octavia and bought a replacement key from a Chinese manufacturer. None of the local automotive locksmiths could program it so I went to the Skoda dealer. They charged me $165 to tell me that the key was not a genuine Skoda key and that I need to buy one through them and have it programmed. The cost &700. With the key programmer demonstrated by DiagnoseDan I may have been able to save $700. I certainly feel that I have been ripped off.

Many years ago I bought a car (306XSI) SH from a main dealer on which every now and then the automatic adjuster in the clutch cable would slip, so I asked them to fix it under warranty. Came back with a new clutch, the old cable and the same fault. Fixed it myself with a new cable and realised it had to be fitted with the adjuster orientated a particular way or it would slip.

I used to occasionally work for a guy on new build or the total renovation of houses. He always had crap ladders and step ladders. Literally, he'd found them in the dump! I did all the plumbing and wiring so I was always up and down a ladder of some sort. I decided that I was going to buy only one step ladder in my life so it would have to be a good one, it cost £160 ten or more years ago. The legs are locked with solid steel bars and wing nuts, no flexing it is solid. It folds out to become a 10ft. ladder, again locked with a solid bar. The treads have sharp "V" shaped ridges, there is no way that you will ever slip. Well damn, I just searched and they don't make them any more :( Titan UK, what have you done?

@@Diagnosedan I have to look this up. I thought a resistive point in the circuit (bad connection or corrosion) would show a voltage drop like putting a resistor in series. If I understand, pulling a current (a load) can generate enough heat at the resistive point that it destroys continuity and breaks the circuit. It's not that the voltage is reading wrong on the meter. It's that the load is testing all the connections under actual current draw and a weak connection will fail. I got the impression from the video that there was a problem with the test meter and the digital test light. Like they were not showing the actual voltage. Really, they are too sensitive. They tell you everything's fine when it isn't. Excellent video (as usual). Worth thinking about.

@@KaasTube Ah, that is right. Normally, at least from my experience, testing is done by casually hitting all the test points and noting the results. It would be, as you say, a requisite to either switch the related component on or, as Dan did (finally), use a resistive test w/ load; ie. incandescent bulb. I need to remember this result. Just as an added comment; I did troubleshooting for a dealer and one of the things that we got a lot of were short circuits caused by the wiring harness being damaged by assembly screws driven thru the harnesses. We had a meter that could follow the harness and find the short. It worked by momentarily switching the circuit on at the fuse box and the meter was hand-held and would pick up the magnetic field of the circuit turning on and off. An arrow on the meter told which direction to move to find the short. I thought that was the coolest. Never saw that system again. Very clever and this was in the '60s. Our most advanced piece of diagnostic gear was the Sun analyzer. Dan has been a tremendous help in furthering my understanding of these things. Thanks for your comments.

Hi Dan, great video and classy troubleshooting process. When I posted 4 months ago I totally missed an important cue. The 11X family meter you were using (116 or 117) have a Low Impedance input (much like an old timey VOM) It's a 3K ohm input for AC or DC compared to VAC Auto or VDC Auto being a 10 Meg ohm input. You should be able to switch to LoZ and see the same phenomenon as with the incandescent test light. The Fluke 11X family I believe were among the first to offer this valuable feature. I have come across this on many occasions before I retired & I noticed that the old fashioned mechanic would use a filament test lamp & your modern technician/auto electrician would use a multi-meter & fall into the trap. Sometimes, the old ways are the best ways😁

Earths... they can be a total pain! We misdiagnosed my brother's Renault with what we thought was a duff ignition switch causing a non start despite a good battery, start relay and healthy starter motor. After going to the dealer to order a non refundable new barrel and key with switch for £170 in 2008 (the old blades were getting worn anyway) and the non starting issue remained. Turned out the ground strap from the bell housing to the body had corroded and broken...this was causing the non start issue and at the time was sorted for £5... that'll teach us for looking for a complicated answer to a simple problem! Thank you for a clear and well made video, superb stuff!
