It looks more like, to me, it's black's game to win. Black does not need to check the king once the white king is exposed. Black can play advancement of it's furthest left pawn. If white tries to contest it, it opens the door for black to move its Queen. White has no pieces to challenge the pawns without loosing pressure on the black king. Any lose of pressure equals black victory. If however White take the furthest left pawn, black forks white queen. Black wins.

Nice puzzle! Though black is in zugzwang, so if white plays just Ka7, Kb7 back and forth, black only can move pawns, and if black plays a3 or b3, then white can play Qg3, after black can not stop Nd3 checkmate. And after some pawn push, black has to play a3 or b3. The reason, why white can not play it immidetaly is, that black can play Qa3. But after black plays a3 or b3, then with Qa3 can’t stop Nd3#. Only this simple solution is not checkmate in 5, but only in 9: Ka7 g3 Kb7 g2 Ka7 f5 Kb7 b5 Ka7 a5 Kb7 a4 Ka7 a3 (or b3) Qg3 and doesn’t matter what black plays, the next is Nd3 checkmate.
@laomedondardanos5658
@laomedondardanos5658 Жыл бұрын
One line I find interesting which you didnt mention, is: Ka8 and then black plays b3 with the idea that then the queen can move to a3 if the rook moves to h7 and attack the white king when the rook takes h2, so that it would not be checkmate in 5. That strategy does not work, because than the rook can go to d8 instead of h7. So the black queen cant leave c1 because of the checkmate at d2. And no matter what black plays, white either wins instantly or white can move the queen to g3 and pin the knight and no move can prevent the checkmate Kd3.

You left out the main variation of this problem composed by Stefan Schneider in 1977. After 1.Ka8! Rh8+ 2.Qe8!, if Black declines the sacrifice and plays 2...Rh2, White's threat of 3.Rh7? is now too slow because of 3...Qa3! 4.Rxh2 Qf3+! Instead White must continue with 3.Re7!, doubling on the e-file and Black has no defence against 4.Rxe2+ Bxe2 5.Qxe2. This variation also explains why after 1...Rh8+, 2.Rd8? doesn't work, because of 2...Rh2! and the doubling attempt 3.Re8 fails as the queen needs to be behind the rook.

Nice puzzle Nelson! I actually saw the idea of Rh7 to lure the rook away, but saw black takes with check, so I thought about a king move. Then dismissed it because black still has the check on h8 and I didn't see Qe8. (Actually I think it's important to point out that black doesn't have to take the queen, but if Rh2 back, you can get your rook in front of the queen and after Re7, the battery on e2 cannot be stopped; if black's knight moves somewhere to laterally defend with the rook, you have the other smothered mate with Kd3.)
@johnathanpatrick6118
@johnathanpatrick6118 Жыл бұрын
At first I thought the first move was going to be a rook move, but then I realized it couldn't be because both White's rook and queen are tying down Black's queen to the d2 pawn and mate threat there. Can't move the knight yet because it's going to be the star of the show (smothered checkmate!!). It had to be a king move, and only 1. Ka8 made the most sense to me because you don't want any pieces (namely the rook) captured with check as to foil the smothered checkmate attempt. Let's see how I did. Edit: Yeah, I thought so. The queen sacrifice was pretty smart, Black's rook is so busy attacking White's back lines, he can't stop the mate threat at g2 anymore.

After Rxe8, could white then sac the rook, as well as the queen? Assuming that's possible, it would be pretty cool winning with only a knight and king. Also, I actually did find the first move, but that was only because you said you'd be surprised if anyone can find it, hinting that it wasn't a logical move or sacrifice!

So I, like many people, wondered what happens if the black rook doesn't take the queen and just retreats back to H2. If Rh2 then white just goes Re7, setting up the battery he mentioned at 2:34. The Ka8 that baited the rook to h8 actually helped us get the queen to where we wanted her for the battery. So, as is of course the point of the puzzle, black well and truly has no good moves after white does the semi-waiting move that is Ka8. All of the pieces that can move shouldn't move. So they can stall with pawn moves until a pawn gets to a3 or b3. Once a pawn gets there, white's queen goes to G3, pinning the knight to set up for the Nd3++.

There is no way Rd3 is not winning. There is 4 things black can do: 1. Qa3 right away - that's checkmate after Qxd2 2. Kxd3 right away is checkmate after knight recaptures 3. wastes a move (moves some pawn for the lack of a better move; probably f pawn because that kind of throws me off) - queen goes to g3 and doesn't matter what black plays to defend after their H-rook is captured it is mate on g2. And if he tries to check me on h7 I go c6 and after the next check - d5 and he has no more checks 4. he first goes for a check: after c6, yet again there is no checks

I paused in the beginning and found a different solution and I'm not sure what's wrong with it. I thought Qg3 on the first move to remove the defender of the smothered mate on g2. Black almost can't move, except for the queen and random pawn moves. (Legally, the rook could move to, after which it's mate immediately though.) How could black defend? Only possibility was ...Qa3 with the idea to check on f3, but white can just take the rook and allow the check. So my mate in 5 solution was: 1 Qg3 Qa3, 2 Qxh2 Qf3+, 3 Ka7 Qb7+ (or some other check), 4 Kxb7 Bxh2, 5 Kg2# (or 4 ...knight moves to give an escape square, then you have the other mate after 5 Nd3).
@thomas_roos
@thomas_roos Жыл бұрын
I was thinking exactly the same, Qg3, and didn't see how black could defend against that, but your post actually helped me find the answer. 1 Qg3 Qa3, 2 Qxh2 Qf3+, 3 Ka7 Qf4, this takes away the smothered check, and black can easily get a queen back after 4 Qf4 c1 into a new queen. Now black is still way ahead but no longer has to fear the smothered check

Ok but what if: Ka8, Qb2 Rh7, c1(promotes to queen) Rxh2, Qc8 check After Ka2, black can play either Bc2 or Qc6 to stop the mate and now has 2 free queens
@ichinoshina2738
@ichinoshina2738 Жыл бұрын
Aft Qb2 white's queen can simply take d2 to deliver checkmate, since the rook guards the queen from being taken by the king, no other piece can take white's queen away and black's king is still smothered.

For the first move, I had a similar thought process where the king had to move in a way that doesnt let the rook get captured with check but instead of Ka8 I instead thought of Kxb6 because if black's knight moves to pin the queen to the king with the bishop then there is smothered mate with Nd3# and if the queen moves there is Qd2#. Otherwise Rh7 baits out black's rook for an eventual Ng2#. Is there a reason why Kxb6 wouldn't work?

Yes, after Rh2 white has nothing better than to put the rook back to d7, repeating the position, which is obviously not what you want. At least white is still winning though
