Richard Attenborough and Arnold Schulman completely misinterpret the significance of this song for the movie adaptation. It goes from an anthem about sacrifice for one's art, sung by the whole company, to a solo about a dancer's affair with the director.

Absolutely true! Actually, there were quite a few decent performances in the movie. But the mis-interpretation of this key song and the general overplay of the romance ruined the movie.

@@mias1385 “What I Did For Love” was originally sung by the character Diana, not Cassie. They changed the context from a love song about the art of dance, to a love song about Zach. Cassie originally had a much better solo called “The Music and the Mirror”.
