In this video I go through a Clean Install on Mint 21 on a Dell XPS 13 9305 including optional drivers and multimedia codecs for full functionality. The Dell XPS 9305 is an 11th Generation Intel System which has a UEFI BIOS and no Legacy Boot Options. Linux Mint 21 is based upon Ubuntu 22.04 LTS and uses an up to date Linux kernel of version 5.15.
Before the install I address the UEFI BIOS settings required for the install in particular:
Enabling Secure Boot which requires configuring a Machine Owner Key (MOK).
Using the AHCI SATA Operation which is required as there is no Intel Rapid Storage Technology/Intel VMD Linux Kernel Driver.
Changing the Pre-boot Behaviour FastBoot Setting from Minimal to Through. This last setting is only required sometimes when the wireless card doesn't initialise properly.
Post install I have a look at updating Linux Mint and customising the Cinnamon Desktop Environment.
I also have a brief look at some commonly used open source software:
FireFox
Chromium
Chrome
Libre Office
OnlyOffice Desktop Editors
KolourPaint
Krita
GIMP
KDENLive
The Cinnamon Desktop Environment used in Mint 21 is tailored for keyboard and mouse use for example in a traditional desktop or non-touch laptop. It has shortcomings when it comes to using a 2 in 1 convertible touchscreen device as it lacks device autorotation (screen and associated touch input rotation). The preinstalled browser Firefox also uses a non-touch input option, touch gestures on the touchscreen highlight text instead of scrolling by default. The onscreen touchscreen keyboard is basic and behind the GNOME3 Desktop Environment in this area.
Touchscreen notes...
There a couple of hacks that can be used to address two of the most annoying touchscreen issues...
To change the touch input option for FireFox so it works with touchscreen. Open up a terminal and type in the following commands:
echo export MOZ_USE_XINPUT2=1 | sudo tee /etc/profile.d/use-xinput2.sh
sudo reboot
To enable autorotation download and extract the kde-auto-rotate-master and double click the install file and select Run in Terminal:

I'm installing linux mint 21.1 and I'm getting the same prompt. I was wondering, what happens if I leave the intall multimedia codecs ticker enabled, but I don't enable the checkmark next to the "configure secure boot" so I do not have to enter password. What would then happen? Would the codecs be still installed without a passwordless prompt at boot?

Yeah, installing Linux on OEM machines is really tricky especially when you want to dual boot with the existed Windows.

Hello great video. But I'm having an issue I'm trying to instill Linux mint. When I'm in the bios I don't see the bootable drive I'm using a Dell XPS 9320 with the same bios that you are using. Also I have tried a windows bootable USB and the bios reads it for some reason it won't see the Linux mint bootable drive. Any help would be appreciated 👍🏾

Great video, Philip! Just what I needed. However, I had a slight problem with my install (Huawei Matebook13). Upon booting from my USB stick, it comes up with a blue "Verification Failed (0x1A)" box. Do I need to go back into the BIOS and disable 'secure boot', and then reboot from the USB? But I'm not sure if this will have consequences, because then upon installation (multimedia codecs), it asks for the creation of a secure boot password which must then be entered later under the option of "enroll MOK" from what I understand. So, I'm not 100% what I need to do.

There has been some info about this on the Linux Mint Forums. Folk needed to disable Secure Boot and update and then they could re-enable it after updating Linux Mint. Ubuntu 23.04 has removed the MOK and uses a more up to date Linux Kernel so hopefully it will soon be a thing of the past. It'll be a while since Linux Mint based on the next Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is released however.

@@philipyip1988 Thank you for that. Interesting. I think for now, I'll disable secure boot before booting from the USB. Would you still fill out the codec and secure boot details, though, upon installation? Sorry if I'm being thick. I'm literally a newbie. PS. I've also sent you a comment on Fedora and would appreciate your thoughts.

Sir, why are you using ISO mode instead of DD mode on Rufus?

I'll never use UEFI secure boot mode enabled with any version of Linux. Uefi if mobo has without secure boot is fine. Other wise legacy mode it is. I do plan on doing something like this but just there was better documentation on truly how cause yea I only for now have an 21.1 LM live USB boot drive. Does have have both legacy and uefi ability. I don't dislike uefi, but secure boot just complicates matters. And stick to AHCI.

Why did you choose "Write ISO image mode" instead of "Write in DD image mode",when Linux Mint is based on Ubuntu,Ubuntu is based on Debian and there is written at the Debian website "To create a bootable USB drive from Microsoft Windows or Mac OS a usable choice is Rufus. Warning: Rufus has 2 writing modes "ISO" and "DD" mode, which you can select just before writing begins. For Debian installer images or Debian live images, you MUST select the "DD" writing mode -- ISO mode will alter the copy of the image on the target media (confirmed August 27, 2021, using rufus version 3.15)." ?
