A Clean Install of Linux Ubuntu 20.04 (Lenovo UEFI BIOS with Secure Boot and MOK)

Ubuntu is the Linux distribution with most support from hardware vendors.
In this video I go through a Clean Install on Ubuntu 20.04 on a Lenovo ThinkStation P320 Tiny using a Unified Extensive Firmware Interface (UEFI) Basic Input Output Output (BIOS) and Secure Boot. For a complete install including codecs and third party drivers, we need to set up a Machine Owner Key (MOK) to allow it to pass Secure Boot.

Thanks for the video. I ran into problems enter the Lenovo Bios of a Thinkpad. Solution: close windows 10 with the shift button pressed. Then it was possible to get into the bios.

Philip I followed your directions but it didnt work for me. All I get is After install the system just shows the Lenovo red banner and then in top left hand corner ‘Reset system’, then the system reboots and just goes into a loop of doing this.

Lenovo haven't listed the device on the Ubuntu certified hardware page. certification.ubuntu.com/desktop That's not to say it won't work, just that they haven't tried it.

What ISO are you using? The original Ubuntu 20.04 ISO supported only an old version of Secure Boot. There was a major Security Exploit in mid 2020 and OEMs such as Lenovo released UEFI BIOS Updates for systems to address this which blocks the Ubuntu 20.04.0 ISO. The Ubuntu 20.04.1 ISO (and later ISOs) have an updated bootloader which passes the patched Secure Boot.

20.04 is pretty old and the older Linux kernel will lack drivers required for a new laptop. 24.04 is newer and should have a more up to date kernel which is more likely to have the drivers required for the newer hardware.

@@philipyip1988 I am using 22.04LTS. Problem was indeed drivers, and i only have 2 usb ports, one was for the actual ubuntu system and another was for either mouse and kb. I had to eject, connect between mouse and kb during whole installation process and after it was fully installed, the drivers got updated :D the pain was real

I'm thinking of buying a used ThinkStation P410, Xeon E5-1630v4E5-1630v4, Quadro K1200 but only if I can install ubuntu 22.04, Or at least any other current version of linux that works. Officially support ended with ubuntu 14.04. Do you think it's too much a risk to buy? I wish I could try it first but not possible.

The processor was released by Intel in 2016 Q2 making it a 2016-2017 model. Linux has pretty good support for systems released post-2015. Although may not work on brand new hardware if the Kernel version is older than the hardware used. Pretty much all of Intel's drivers are included in the Linux Kernel. The only significant Intel driver Linux lacks is a RAID driver so the AHCI SATA Operation has to be used. That system also has a NVIDIA graphics card, so the NVIDIA driver needs to be installed... NVIDIA Open GPU kernel modules made their way into Ubuntu 22.04 LTS. Previously there was a limited open-source driver and a proprietary closed source driver that had to be installed separately. I'm not sure if the updated open-source driver supports the Quadro K1200. In any case ensure Install third-party software for graphics and Wi-Fi hardware and additional media formats is checked and manage the MOK. Ubuntu should install the drivers for the graphics card and you can check what driver is being used by opening Software & Updates and checking the Additional Driver Tab post-installation. If you are referencing Lenovos "Linux for Personal Systems", it is an archive and is seriously outdated... There is instead the updated documentation "Ubuntu certified desktops" on the Ubuntu website. There is normally some partnership with Canonical and Lenovo here, so it is generally in warranty systems supported by Lenovo on a current LTS release of Ubuntu. The 2017 model is out of warranty and so not supported by Lenovo but will likely work with Ubuntu 23.04 without issue.

I visted "Ubuntu certified desktops" page also for another model I"ve become iterested in "Lenovo P520c Workstation, Xeon W2133, Quadro P1000". In this case, three specific kernels of Ubuntu 20.04 LTS 64 Bit are certified for three variations of P520c hardware and BIOS. I'm not sure if the verified custom image would be available to (non-warranty/un-registered) hardware owners. That part of the statement "Standard images of Ubuntu may not work well, or at all" and if I'm not mistaken is where your advice to "Install third-party software for graphics" particularly would apply. I'm assuming it's unlikely the verified custom image is freely available to all. The following statement (three variations of P520C): "Pre-installed in some regions with a custom Ubuntu image that takes advantage of the system’s hardware features and may include additional software. Standard images of Ubuntu may not work well, or at all." The generic kernel verified with: W-2135 CPU with a different GPU (not the P2000). The 5.10.0-1023-oem kernel verified with: W-2135 CPU and Quardo P1000.
