Ubuntu by Canonical is the Linux distribution with most support from hardware vendors. Dell in particular test a large proportion of their hardware with Ubuntu. In this video I go through a Clean Install on Ubuntu 22.04 Long Term Support (LTS) on a Dell XPS 13 9305 Laptop (11th Generation Intel Processor) using a UEFI BIOS and Secure Boot and WD19TB Thunderbolt Dock. The SATA Operation must be changed to AHCI as Ubuntu does not support a RAID SATA Operation and does not include a Linux Intel VMD Driver.
Ubuntu 23.04 is now out:

* Make Sure Secure Boot is On. This will mean you are using a UEFI Boot with Secure Boot. Remove Old Boot Entries, ensure that the SATA Operation is AHCI and optionally configure Dell Data Wipe (this is in the Security Tab of newer models and the Maintenance Tab of older models). If you are not prompted to connect to a network during the Ubuntu install. Ubuntu may not be able to fully initialsie your Wireless Card. Update your BIOS using a USB flash drive from the Boot Menu. If that does not work. Switch on the Airplane Switch for your Wireless Card, then power down. Power up and change the Fast Boot Post Behaviour from Minimal to Thorough. Switch on the Airplane Switch.
For a complete UEFI install including codecs and third party drivers, we need to set up a Machine Owner Key (MOK) to allow it to pass Secure Boot.
I then move over to a Dell XPS 13 9365 Convertible 2 in 1 Touchscreen Device (7th Generation Intel Processor) to check the performance of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS with Touchscreen systems.
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is a significant improvement over Ubuntu 20.04 LTS. It has a new kernel with new drivers for example for Thunderbolt Docks. The system can not dock and undock unlike in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS where the system froze. The kernel has a NTFS driver and an updated display driver model. This new display driver model essentially allows for multiple monitor configurations, for example use of a high DPI laptop screen and standard DPI desktop monitor. In the past the same DPI needed to be used across both screens, essentially making one unusable.
Ubuntu 22.04 LTS has a snap only application store. These install programs, with all their dependencies sandboxed. The Firefox Browser preinstalled works properly with a 2 in 1 Touchscreen Device unlike in Ubuntu 20.04 LTS where it used a mouse and keyboard only input method. I test this browser with the updated touchscreen keyboard which includes emojis and use the XPS 13 2 in 1 in Laptop, Tent and Tablet Mode. The rotation sensor of the Laptop works with the GNOME Desktop as environment, auto-rotating the screen and touch input, although there is a minor issue if converted from a tablet to a laptop to quickly.
Unfortunately the Chromium browser and Chrome browser (built upon Chromium), input address bar and input search bar do not call up the onscreen keyboard... As the touchscreen keyboard can not be manually called up using a button, this makes them unusable in tent mode or tablet mode without an external keyboard. A partial workaround to this is to install GNOME Extension manager from the Ubuntu Software Store. In the GNOME Extension manager, install Improved Onscreen Keyboard. Change the settings to show the statusbar icon, this will display an icon to the top right which you can use to manually invoke the onscreen keyboard. Unfortunately this statusbar icon will only work when the onscreen keyboard is also enabled in the Accessibility Menu.
Although the Ubuntu Store is snap only we can install software using the traditional advance package tool (apt) using the terminal or by use of a Debian (.deb) package. snap installs can also be carried out in the terminal. I give an example of all of these installation possibilities and look at installing commonly used browsers Firefox, Chromium and Chrome, commonly used office suites Libre Office and Only Office Desktop Editors, commonly used image applications such as gimp, krita and kolourpaint. A commonly used screen-recording software such as Vokoscreen and a commonly used video editor such as kdenlite (please add more suggestions in the comments).

Greetings, First of all thanks for this ultimate guide. Successfully installed Ubuntu on my Dell laptop(6th gen. Intel Skylake system) But whenever I switch on my system "Booting in insecure mode" & "[ 0.124871] x86/cpu: SGX disabled by BIOS /dev/sda2: clean, 214187/29278208 files, 4688686/117081344 blocks" And after this messages system boot normal. Mind you both UEFI & secure boot are enabled in BIOS Regards

Thank you for this excellent review. My questions, if you don't mind: 1) How is the battery life under Ubuntu? On the spec sheet of XPS 13 9305 (I saw it in John Lewis this afternoon) it says "up to 19 hours". The battery of my current laptop runs out after one hour, so this one would be an ideal replacement. But I'd replace Windows with Ubuntu. 2) Is the RAM upgradeable (not soldered)? I use Ubuntu for development works and I'd like to reuse the 32GB RAM from my existing laptop. Thank you in advance. (edit: added the 2nd question).

The XPS 9305 is non-touch. I used the XPS 9365 to demonstrate touchscreen capability. The RAM is non-removable (soldered onto the motherboard). I've not tested the battery life under Ubuntu 22.04 LTS yet.

Have you encountered any WIFI issues with the 9365. Intel 8265 wifi card has been dropping packets constantly with every linux distro i have used.
@philipyip1988

The XPS 13 9365 had an issue with wireless in my case where it was essentially not being detected by the Linux setup... First of all update the BIOS to the latest version, you can do this by downloading the BIOS update to USB. Then updating the BIOS from the boot menu. Then in Linux turn on the airplane switch to turn off the wireless card. Then shutdown from Linux. Power the computer and enter the BIOS setup pressing F2. Changed the fast boot behaviour from minimum to through. I've not had issues with the wireless on Ubuntu 22.04, 22.10 or Fedora 37.

@@philipyip1988 I have had considerably noticeable connection timeouts in every linux distribution using this Dell 9365 with Intel 8365 wifi chip. I have changed kernels and still no fix. My bios is up todate using the latest bios. After a fresh install everything works well. All connection issues start after a restart. I am currently running 20.04 using 5.13 kernel and experiencing the same issue. I have tried. Manjaro, Ubuntu, Fedora, PopOS, Zorin. I noticed the WIFI issue only after i switched from Manjaro. I could have been having the same issue in Manjaro and not noticed. Any suggestions?

@@CliffiDerossi Ubuntu 20.04 and Kernel 5.13 are pretty old... There were a lot of driver issues in 20.04 such as lack of a NTFS driver, lack of support for Thunderbolt Docks booting and lack of support for multimonitor configurations where the screens have different resolutions. I think the wireless issue I mentioned was more prevalent on Ubuntu 20.04 but that was in my case the wireless card not showing up at all when booting into Linux and not an intermittent issue. I made a previous video and installation guide highlighting all of these issues that got pretty popular, so maybe it helped flag up some of these issues to developrers. In any case Ubuntu 22.04 LTS ran much better on the XPS 13 9365. Although I like the Zorin OS Desktop Environment, its Ubuntu base is too old... and therefore inherits all the issues from the outdated version of Ubuntu... I used Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on the XPS 13 9365 for a while and then Ubuntu 22.10 when it first came out. It has been running Fedora 37 for a month. The only issue I would say is the touchscreen keyboard isn't invoked when pressing into a text input field with many applications... This is more of an issue with the GNOME Desktop Environment itself rather than the hardware. There was a GNOME extension for Ubuntu 22.04 that made the touchscreen keyboard behave better but it hasn't been updated for newer versions of GNOME.

The MOK was normally one time use. Its used to associate the multimedia codecs and unsigned drivers used by legacy Linux Kernels during boot. Ubuntu 23.04 and Fedora 38 do not have a MOK as most of the drivers and codecs are now digitally signed and included in the updated Linux Kernel. And the biggest culprit (NVIDIA) are contributing towards open source drivers directly.
