Jake really is a genius and that’s why I made sure to give him credit for the mod. Of course he works on type 4 cases but after some chatting with fellow VW builders we couldn’t think of a reason not to do it on type 1 cases. This is the second one that I’ve done, first one still doesn’t sleep at all either.

Looks nice in there! Im going to do that to my 2058 even though I dont think its seeping from that area.(i did enlarge the return hole though) i also used different sealants as well on that build(curil brand) and did not like the results. I will be going back to indian head gasket shellac for the case halves, three bond 1211, ultra black and ultra copper for everything else like i did on the db engine. I also ran a single piece of floss around the outside perimeter of the case(heard that from a really old engine builder) with zero leaks/seeps and no affect on bearing clearances
@VWJawbreaker Жыл бұрын
Yep, all is well as I hoped for and anticipated! I haven’t tried Indian head for the case yet, I’ve tried other things and Yamabond is my go to and I’ll never use anything else. Never heard of the floss trick, I can see how that would work! Will we be seeing any update vids anytime soon?
@V8N8T Жыл бұрын
@VWJawbreaker 3 bond is the same manufacturer from what I've heard as yamabond, kawabond ect . All my motors have been done with Indian head except for my stroker with great results it has a very thin film thickness where silicone and rtv are usually thicker(a few thou) I need to get the tripod setup sland do another video soon the time to work on the rigs is pretty scarce so when I've had a half hour here and there I just get straight to it. I think next video will have the introduction to the new rig(dad gave me his truck) and what I've done to it and the little work I've done on herbie. Man I think it's been a few months since I've done a video!

hummmmm interesting but I'm not sold on that mod even if it was done on type 4. My books don't show a close up in that area. Why would the seal leak with the engine off anyway? Unless the seal is damaged from to much crankcase pressure. All of my engines mark there spot. hehehe
@VWJawbreaker Жыл бұрын
It was a stock feature on some type 4 engine cases, I think it was the latter ones that had it. Usually when that area is full of oil, it’ll seep past and mark the spot. Figured it was worth a try to see if it helps or not. One thing I did not mention on the video but if you go back and look, this case had a drainage passage below the dowel pin but noting to vent air into that area.
@vintage76vipergreenBeetle Жыл бұрын
The hot rod vw books, don't show that upgrade, because vw did the upgrade in the late 70's on the type 4 2.0L cases only. All the issues the type 1 cases had, vw upgrade them on the later type 4 cases. The upgrade on main seal, does work well.
@TheEZGZ Жыл бұрын

@@TheEZGZ I ended up doing this kid on that 1776 I did a little while back. It’s not dripping a drop whatsoever. On this engine I ran out of my normal sealant and used the aviation permitex…. Won’t ever use that again for case halves. I normally use Yamabond and I’ll never stray from that again.

I have never seen that mod before. Won’t they just clog up with sealant when you put the halves back together, or worse cause a leak from case pressure. I would love more information on this. Thanks
@Slick56 Жыл бұрын
You could prove the passage after assembly and before mainseal install
@VWJawbreaker Жыл бұрын
If you are careful with your sealant it will not clog the modded area. Also, if you have that much pressure in your case that it comes out there, you have other issues.
