On Saturday evening, Police received report of a vessel sinking on the Firth of Thames.
None of the four aboard the vessel had access to life jackets.

i have mad respect for nz police. They are respectful and reliable, there are bad apples everywhere but nz police is just exceptional.

Wow, all for the sake of a bit of water safety equipment. An EPIRB always seems expensive until you need it and of course real men don't wear lifejackets. "We're not a rescue organization" but you did a pretty bloody good job of being a rescue organization. Well done to all involved. Glad they were OK, that bought tears to my eyes, they were so close to not going home again.

Life Jackets shouild be made mandatory with huge penalties if not carried on the craft. They are akin to seatbelts in a car and the right number of jackets per occupant should be made law

It is a legal requirement in New Zealand for all persons on personal boats to be wearing life jackets. And because of their carelessness could have had really bad consequences. they should be fined appropriately.
