One reason the old 16 to 1 gold : silver ratio hasn't held up is that silver isn't typically mined in its native form. Electrochemical purification is used for a variety of metals. One bi-product of this is actually silver, so you end up with a lot more silver than you did in the old days. Gold also has an advantage as a way to store wealth because you don't need nearly as much room to store it.
