These have been several times when multiple people, including EMS workers, have gone into pits hoping to save others who already went unconscious, usually resulting in multiple deaths, as in the second story. It can also happen when too much C02 at the bottom. And the daughter who carried the dad up the ladder is amazing….even just the physical strength to do that is incredible.

Yeah it seems like the sort of hazard that's especially dangerous because it's less foreseeable/not common knowledge. I imagine such situations aren't as commonplace as they once were, in areas where farming communities are dwindling. I'm a huge emergency prevention/response nerd, have been in healthcare for ages, have some emergency med training, and have experience with some animal medicine/care, but it honestly wouldn't usually occur to me that a manure pit might have gases that could act so quickly (it came to mind immediately when watching the video but obviously I'm watching this while impatiently guessing at hazards, totally different experience). Even if I'd known others had fallen unconscious or otherwise realized gases could be an issue, I can STILL see myself hurrying right inside to help, with "there's no time to worry about it, I'll just hold my breath" logic. Makes one wonder why some sort of mask/air tank apparatus isn't standard equipment for first responders, at least one small supply that can be easily strapped on and leave one's hands free and last for a few minutes of air, so someone could safely poke their head into a critical situation and assess things at least if not also try to act.

My father was a medic at port everglades. He told me a story similar to the ladder story. A crew working on a massive tanker went on break. The foremen usually came and got them when break was over. 30 minutes in to what was supposed to be a 15 minute break, they realized the foreman was missing. The tanker had a ladder that reached down to the bottom, over 60 feet. At the bottom of the ladder they could see their foreman on the ground in a pool of blood. A worker from the crew immediately began descending the ladder to get to the foreman. After descending only a couple feet, the worker let go. And fell to the bottom. So a second worker attempted to descend and same thing. A few feet down he just lets go. The worst part was, as the men were falling down the ladder, their arms and legs were getting caught in the ladder and snapping. 3 mangled bodies in a puddle of blood were now at the bottom. Turns out a massive argon gas tank had reptured, when they lowered an oxygen detector down, it hit 0% about 5 feet down

You need like a Sherpa who climbs mountains in a low oxygen environment for their day job and free dives and practices holding their breath as a hobby. However I do think if I knew the air was bad I could climb down the ladder and tie ropes to the others and climb back up myself while holding my breath.

Volunteer firefighter here, slight correction on the slurry tank story; it’s not that the gases are toxic, it’s that they are heavier than oxygen which means in a confined space they build up and force out the oxygen. You get the same type of thing in confined spaces on ships due to the metal oxidizing and using up all the oxygen. You can counteract this by forcing fresh air into the space with fans in some scenarios or the much safer way of using an SCBA mask and air tank to breathe on air while in those environments.

Hydrogen sulfide gas causes a wide range of health effects. Workers are primarily exposed to hydrogen sulfide by breathing it. The effects depend on how much hydrogen sulfide you breathe and for how long. Exposure to very high concentrations can quickly lead to death. Short-term (also called acute) symptoms and effects are shown below: IDLH: immediately dangerous to life and health (level thatinterferes with the ability to escape) (NIOSH) 700-1000ppm Rapid unconsciousness, "knockdown" or immediate collapse within 1 to 2 breaths, breathing stops, death within minutes. 1000-2000ppm Nearly instant death Source; OSHA .gov

The other day when I came back from school, my mom told me my dad had serious accident on the way to work and that his truck went out of the road and crushed and turned a few times. Luckily, his car seat broke and he fell backwards, if not, all the glasses would have gone into his face and that the sit breaking was what saved him. I remember hearing this sad story of the police officer. He was so young and was about to get married. Apparently, he was truly one of the good guys. The boys that did this to him showed no remorse, and evidence showed that they were aware that he was being dragged along, but chose to continue driving. Just so sickening. People, nothing is worth a life. Let them take your stuff, and deal with the insurance and police later. A quad bike isn't worth a life. The last story is just so sad, but it also makes me mad. She leaves her husband for cheating on her, yet it's okay for her to sleep with a married man, and get pregnant? I think that she might have tried to blackmail that man into marriage, and that is why he killed her. Granted killing her was a pretty evil thing to do, and I wish these ladies would rethink trying to break up marriages. Some men will go to any lengths to keep what they did from their wives, and here is your proof.

In that last story, I can't believe the murdered just sold the house with the barrel still in the crawlspace. It was obviously going to be just a matter of time before the new owner discovered its contents. That's just really bizarre, it's almost like he forgot about it, but then again, how do you just forget something like that? All he had to do was bury it in the garden and he would have never gotten caught.

Now feels like as good a time as any to remind people that if you ever see someone collapse without warning, be very cautious. While it could be a medical emergency for them like a heart attack or something, it could also be lack of oxygen or some other gas. In situations like inside a tank or not well circulated room, the odds of it being a gas issue are much higher. You can also be much more sure it is a gas issue if multiple people collapse in the same area, one after the other.

I couldn't imagine how heartbroke, frustrated and a myriad of other emotions, you would feel to suddenly stop hearing from your child, and to have no idea where they went, or what happened to them, for 28 years. Especially when you both have waited 9 long months for a baby to arrive, then never getting the chance to see his/her face. My wife and I have recently had our second child (3 months ago), so I know how excited, and frustrating, the wait is. We both wanted him out, but for different reasons, although very much worth the wait, I couldn't imagine how her mother felt to never meet her grandchild. RIP to both mother and child. I can‘t believe that my favorite cautionary tale is here! Didn‘t expect that! One after the other climbing into the death tank because SURELY it must be safe NOW. I mean… After the second person did the exact same thing as the first, that‘s when you stop and make an emergency call AT THE LATEST. RIP to everyone who died there. They didn‘t deserve it. But please, everyone, learn danger assessment. You are no use to your family if you kill yourself in an attempt to help. You can only help if you are alive. And awake.
@WhoamI-yz9nx11 ай бұрын
The second story reminds me of something similar that happened in my country, Russia. Four family members died after going into their basement because the potatoes they stored there were rotten and produced toxic gases. It went similarly - dad went to the basement and didn't return so his wife went to help him and so on. The couple, their 18 year old son and their mother-in-law ended up dying and their 8 year old daughter managed to survive. And now that I googled it, turns out the same thing happened again in a different city in 2019. Again, four people died, going in one after another to try to help those already inside, - a couple and their 16 year old son and a guy working for the family.

Absolutely a total coward. Also; you don't scream at a woman that you are going to kill her and your wife doesn't know. He was not only a killer, he was a baby killer. And he got upset when finally being questioned, such audacity!... believe he went over to a neighbor's garage to off himself. What a class act! Selfish self entitled tool to the end. Leave his mess for someone else, yet again. Like the barrel he entombed her in. Hope he fled this mortal coil in fear of his shattered reputation. And the taste of gun oil on his soft palate. Send his wife over with a mop. And a rag. Justice? Not by half.
